Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dreams of Flight, Fran Martin explores how young Chinese women negotiate competing pressures on their identity while studying abroad. On one hand, unmarried middle-class women in the single-child generations are encouraged to develop themselves as professional human capital through international education, molding themselves into independent, cosmopolitan, career-oriented individuals. On the other, strong neotraditionalist state, social, and familial pressures of the post-Mao era push them back toward marriage and family by age thirty. Martin examines these women’s motivations for studying in Australia and traces their embodied and emotional experiences of urban life, social media worlds, work in low-skilled and professional jobs, romantic relationships, religion, Chinese patriotism, and changed self-understanding after study abroad. Martin illustrates how emerging forms of gender, class, and mobility fundamentally transform the basis of identity for a whole generation of Chinese women.

Book Understanding The Origin And Global Spread Of Covid 19

Download or read book Understanding The Origin And Global Spread Of Covid 19 written by Nalin Chandra Wickramasinghe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-06-29 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This curated collection of scientific papers on the origin and global spread of COVID-19 is a unique project that offers explanations at odds with mainstream views as the theme mainly focuses on Panspermia (viruses, microorganisms and their spores, and cometary arrival of even more complex cellular organisms). No other scientific group has paid attention to the temporal unfolding scientific order at the many required levels of understanding — astrobiological and astrophysical, geographical and the temporal order of global proportions, yet regional epidemics, the immunologic dimensions to the infection and epidemic data, the genetics of the SARS-CoV-2 virus as it adapted, varied and appeared in different human populations in the crucial first few months of the pandemic. This in-depth analysis, over a two-year period, allows a better understanding of what engulfed the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, how it happened and the most plausible way. There are many lessons for future generations that can be distilled from the contributions found in this book.

Book True North

Download or read book True North written by Catherine Deveny and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An uplifting, heartfelt memoir about surviving life’s upheavals – and how to live authentically 'A bombshell of honesty and hope. This book has the power to heal hearts.' —Clare Bowditch 'Catherine Deveny is a blazing light in a world that is often grim. She brings her immense generosity of spirit to this beautiful memoir, and we are blessed to have her.' —Clementine Ford When writer Catherine Deveny faced the end of a seventeen-year relationship with the father of her children, she had no idea what lay on the other side of the months of tumult: she just knew she had to create space for a new life. But this wasn't the first time Deveny had taken a plunge into the unknown or let go of conventional assumptions. In True North, she shares how she emerged from an oppressive Catholic upbringing in working-class Reservoir, found her tribe in Fitzroy's sharehouses in the '80s, and learnt to live life on her own terms as she navigated the highs and lows of a creative life, family legacies and intimate relationships. 'This is the kind of story that stays with you long after you turn the final page.' —Michael Lallo, The Age 'Breathtaking.' —Chrissie Swan

Book Stream System

  • Release : 2018-04-03
  • ISBN : 0374717281
  • Pages : 470 pages

Download or read book Stream System written by Gerald Murnane and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories from a mind-bending Australian master, “a genius on the level of Beckett” (Teju Cole) Never before available to readers in this hemisphere, these stories—originally published from 1985 to 2012—offer an irresistible compendium of the work of one of contemporary fiction’s greatest magicians. While the Australian master Gerald Murnane’s reputation rests largely on his longer works of fiction, his short stories stand among the most brilliant and idiosyncratic uses of the form since Borges, Beckett, and Nabokov. Brutal, comic, obscene, and crystalline, Stream System runs from the haunting “Land Deal,” which imagines the colonization of Australia and the ultimate vengeance of its indigenous people as a series of nested dreams; to “Finger Web,” which tells a quietly terrifying, fractal tale of the scars of war and the roots of misogyny; to “The Interior of Gaaldine,” which finds its anxious protagonist stranded beyond the limits of fiction itself. No one else writes like Murnane, and there are few other authors alive still capable of changing how—and why—we read.

Book Managing Educational Tourism

Download or read book Managing Educational Tourism written by Brent W. Ritchie and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2003-01-09 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly tourists are seeking learning and educational holidays. This interest has led to the provision of tourism product with some form of learning or education as an integral component, including cultural heritage tourism and ecotourism. The growth of offshore education and lifelong learning has stimulated cross-border movement for language learning, school excursions and university student travel. Reflecting this growth in educational tourism types, the author outlines the main forms of educational tourism, their demand and supply characteristics, their impacts and the management issues associated with them, taking a holistic systems-based perspective. The book argues that without adequate research and appropriate management of educational forms of tourism, the potential regional development impacts and personal learning benefits will not be maximised. The book highlights the need for collaboration and networking between both the tourism and education industries to adequately manage the issues surrounding the growth in educational tourism.
