Are they indolent? Nature has made indo lence possible and even convenient for them. Are they improvident? Why should they lay by for the morrow Which has always so generously taken care of itself! His word for clothing means adornment, and only with the coming Of the White man has it taken on our idea Of cloth ing. Here again nature is responsible, having given him a dark skin that answers well his purpose for a covering. Dress to him is a luxury not a necessity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bulletin of the Western Theological Seminary, Vol. 18: October, 1925 We are told that when the Jews stirred up a riot in Macedonian Beroea also, the Christian brethren sent Paul off at once on his way to the sea. His escort apparently did not leave him until they had delivered him safe upon Attic soil. We can imagine the apostle and his companions Walking the short few miles from the Port of Piraeus up to Athens. Many others have taken that path, men liv ing just before Paul's day, or his contemporaries, or those to come shortly after. Philo and Josephus have followed the line of the long walls, and Cicero and Seneca. All the world went that road to its school-mas ters. For Athens was - shall we say is - the intellectual and artistic capital of the world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Bulletin of the Western Theological Seminary Vol 21 written by James A. Kelso and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bulletin of the Western Theological Seminary, Vol. 21: A Review Devoted to the Interests of Theological Education; October, 1928 The facts are that the fortunes Of this branch of the Bunyan family had fallen very low, for John's father was excused from paying the county hearth tax, and, in stead Of being a farmer like many Of his forebears, he earned a precarious living as a brazier, going from house to house to repair pots and kettles. Poor though the family was, it did not suffer from the squalor that we find in the slums Of a modern city or in the cabins Of a mining Village. Humble was the birthplace of this child Of genius, indeed very humble is the little thatched cottage which is shown as the place Of his nativity, but there is nothing unique in this. Did not Martin Luther see the light Of day in a miner's hut, Abraham Lincoln in a log cabin, and our Blessed Savior himself in the manger Of an inn? Like a great predecessor in the Apos tolic succession, who was a tent maker by trade and an Apostle by the call Of God, this humble Englishman was a brazier by trade as was his father, and a dreamer of dreams and a seer Of Visions by the inspiration Of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bulletin of the Western Theological Seminary: A Review Devoted to the Interests of Theological Education; Published Five Times During the Year: In January, February, April, July and October, by the Trustees of the Western Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America Some time ago I listened to an encyclopedic and able paper on the subject of "The Material and Method of Theology." This article is a contribution to the second division of that subject - viz., the Method of Theology. It might be thought in advance that the material is more important than the method. But a knowledge of the history of discussion contradicts that view. It will be found that method has been more potent than material. The reason is plain. Method has determined the point of view. The point of view has been the organizing principle in the use of material, so that the worth of material has been made relative. Its bearing upon and value to a system of thought has been influenced by classification, the place assigned it in the construction of the system. Ministers are familiar with this thought. When they have gathered the material for a sermon they do not have the sermon by any means. The use made of the material is relatively the important thing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bulletin of the Western Theological Seminary: A Review Devoted to the Interests of Theological Education My father and mother were accomplished vocalists and sang together, years ago, in the. Choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh. Indeed, it is a mat ter of quite tender sentiment with me, in connection with my pastorate of this church, that this may have had much to do with their sub-sequent marriage and so, naturally, with my own appearance upon this 'terrestrial ball.
