Book The Bulk and Interfacial Electronic and Chemical Structure of Amorphous Hydrogenated Boron Carbide

Download or read book The Bulk and Interfacial Electronic and Chemical Structure of Amorphous Hydrogenated Boron Carbide written by Marcus Sky Driver and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chemical and electronic structure, as related to the surface, interface and bulk of amorphous hydrogenated boron carbide (a-BxC:Hy), is of interest in neutron detection and microelectronics. This dissertation investigates the chemical and electronic structure of semiconducting thin-film a-BxC:Hy grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of ortho-carborane (1,2-C2B10H12). Experimental methods used include: x-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS/UPS) and x-ray absorption/emission spectroscopies (XAS/XES). These methods were used to investigate the chemical species, bonding and hybridizations, and band gaps of a-BxC:Hy prepared or treated under varying conditions. Additionally, a detailed examination of the formation of Schottky barriers was implemented. Throughout this dissertation the chemical structure was studied. One study was to understand various growth conditions. The effects of the PECVD growth parameters were evaluated by comparing changes in atomic percentages (at.%'s) between thin-films from various substrate temperatures. Additionally, detailed studies of the photoelectron core level under two different growth conditions were undertaken to evaluate the effects of pre-/post- argon ion etching (Ar+) for the following: the chemical structural change for both an as grown (AG) and in-situ thermal treatment (500°C), and post Ar+ etch of samples thermally treated ranging from as grown to 850°C. The as grown and in-situ treated samples were used in conjunction to determine the formation of the Schottky barrier. The electronic structure was determined by the changes within the valence band of the thermally treated samples and formation of Schottky barrier. Thermally treated samples (as grown to 850°C) were further evaluated with respect to their occupied and unoccupied electronic states. The atomic percentage gave a stoichiometry range for a-BxC:Hy (given as x=1.5 to 3.0 with y= decreases with thermal treatment and Oz: z= 0.2 to 0.5). Studies of films with respect to thermal treatment reveal two discrete state changes that occur at 400°C and 850°C. These changes are due to segregation of carbon and oxygen by the reorganization of the hydrocarbon chains between icosahedra. Additionally, the Schottky barrier study indicates that a clean surface was necessary before deposition of an ohmic contact and from the metals studied. Such studies are important to applications for high temperature thermoelectric converters, high-efficiency direct-conversion solid-state neutron detectors and microelectronics.

Book Study of Amorphous Boron Carbide and Hydrogenated Boron Carbide Materials Using Molecular Dynamics and Hybrid Reverse Monte Carlo

Download or read book Study of Amorphous Boron Carbide and Hydrogenated Boron Carbide Materials Using Molecular Dynamics and Hybrid Reverse Monte Carlo written by Rajan Khadka and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a computational study of amorphous boron carbide (a-BxC) models using Molecular Dynamics (MD) studied with Stillinger-Weber (SW) and ReaxFF potential. The atomic structure factor (S(Q)), radial distribution function (RDF) and bond lengths comparison with other experimental and ab initio models shows that a random arrangement of icosahedra (B12, B11C) interconnected by chains (CCC, CBC) are present in a-BxC. Afterward, Hybrid Reverse Monte Carlo (HRMC) technique is used to recreate a-BxC structures. The existing SW potential parameters of Boron are optimized for the a-rhombohedral (Icosahedral B12) boron structure using potential energy minimization and incorporated into HRMC. The a-BxC modeled from MD simulation is used as a sample for experimental input parameters like RDF, S(Q), coordination environments (CO), bond angle distribution (B([theta])) and bond length (BL) to guide initial configuration and simulation in HRMC. An accurate agreement of structural information between HRMC and MD generated models was found. Also, we have modeled the amorphous hydrogenated boron carbide (a-BxC:Hy) material using MD simulation to determine the structural characteristics of experimentally prepared a-BxC:Hy using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique. The simulated a-BxC:Hy models are characterized for RDF, S(Q), B([theta]), CO, Structural units (SU), and CO information. The key structural features of a-BxC:Hy is mapped out with the density, hydrogen concentration and the stoichiometry of experimentally prepared films prepared using single-source precursor ortho-carborane.

Book Physical Properties of Amorphous Materials

Download or read book Physical Properties of Amorphous Materials written by David Adler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Institute for Amorphous Studies was founded in 1982 as the international center for the investigation of amorphous mate rials. It has since played an important role in promoting the und er standing of disordered matter in general. An Institute lecture series on "Fundamentals of Amorphous Materials and Devices" was held during 1982-83 with distinguished speakers from universities and industry. These events were free and open to the public ,and were attended by many representatives of the scientific community. The lectures themselves were highly successful inasmuch as they provided not only formal instruction but also an opportunity for vigorous and stimulating debate. That last element could not be captured within the pages of a book I but the lectures concentrated on the latest advances in the field I which is why their essential contents are he re reproduced in collective form. Together they constitute an interdisciplinary status report of the field. The speakers brought many different viewpoints and a variety of back ground experiences io bear on the problems involved I but though language and conventions vary I the essential unity of the concerns is very clear I as indeed are the ultimate benefits of the many-sided approach.
