Download or read book The Character Building Readers Classic Reprint written by Ellen E. Kenyon-Warner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Character Building Readers Not all of the pieces are charged with a moral. As in the other numbers of this series (excepting the last), variety is secured by a sprinkling of themes that have no relation to Ethics. The special aims of the first-year course receive some reen forcement in this, and there is also a foreshadowing of what will be more definitely attempted in succeeding numbers. The Method of Teaching is no longer set forth in a Teachers' Edition. Children who have had the powerful Course in Word Study given in the first year's work will find this book easy reading. It is graded to meet the needs of the average class after any good first-year course. Teachers should master the principles Of the Natural Method in Reading, as set forth in the Teachers' Edition for first-year work, and apply them in this and subsequent grades. The first of these is that words are to be regarded as inter esting Objects of study, not as items in a Spelling List. The next is that words are best studied in their relations, not as isolated objects. There are two sets of relations that shed light on words and their content. One is the relations they sustain to other words In context, by which their meanings are modified and by which we are led to choose subconsciously between two pronunciations of the word row or between two spellings of the word rein, rain, etc. The study of words in context must be pursued with great caution not to suggest homonyms unnecessarily, and to lead the thought away from their accidental association by much practice upon one alone until the other is forgotten. The question Which shall I use in this connection? Would never arise if alert teaching could perfectly guard against it, but the occasion would always suggest the correct form alone, and never the two. The mere babe first gazes with astonishment on the newest or most noticeable thing in view and then wishes to act upon it. Sentiment dawns under stimulation by mother or kindergarten. The kindergarten systematically recognizes the rhythmic action of the mind within its range of interests. The Character Build ing Readers continue the moral culture of the child under this law. The successive awakenings they endeavor to promote to clear perceptions of and enthusiasm for (i) mother-love, tenderness, chivalry, etc.; (2) industry; (3) cooperation and helpfulness; (4) courage and perseverance follow the natural swinging of the pendulum of growth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building on Rock: Character-Building Under the Master Builder Thoughtful men and women in our day are concerned as men have seldom been before to get at reality in religion. There have been long periods of Christian history in which this insistent demand for reality before all else has by no means been the dominant note in religious thinking. Men have been strangely satisfied with what was traditional or conventional or respectable, with what was endorsed by the Church, or prescribed by the creeds, or apparently advantageous to society. But today, largely because of the scientific and critical temper of our age, in which sheer honesty and love of the truth will allow nothing to pass unchallenged, we are quite unable to take over our religion from the past, even if we wished to do so. We are no longer satisfied that what our fathers rested on so implicitly, in theology any more than in other fields of knowledge, must needs be true. We are compelled, whether we will or no, to apply the test of reality to every phase of the religious life. Is there anything about it that for us is merely formal or conventional, or that now begins to appear outworn or artificial or illusory? Is our own personal religion, or the current religion of Christian society, "the real thing"? Or does it show signs of collapsing under strain, as though it could not meet the fierce test of present-day problems? Obviously there is a. dismaying breakdown of much that has passed for Christianity. What, in fact, is Christianity, and where do we get closest to its heart? It does not matter whether we enjoy asking questions such as these, or whether we like to hear others ask them. We cannot help it. It is impossible for us to share in the scholarly life of our generation and not feel the force of this insistent demand for the essential and abiding elements in the Christian faith. Our Lord himself would be in sympathy with such a temper. It has its dangers and plainly may be pressed to an extreme. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Light for Daily Living: Studies in the Building of Character The first method by which sin may be over come is abstinence. I beseech you, says Peter, as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul. Salva tion by abstinence belongs to the childhood period of the religious life. The burned child dreads the fire. This is the experience which springs from the instinct of fear. If sin hurts you, keep away from it. If you suli'er from a sinful habit, give up the habit. This is the method of reformation. If you are the subject of worry, cease your anxiety, and settle dovvn in a life of peace. If the serpent of sin bites you, keep away from its haunts. If you do not wish to die in a foreign land, stay at home. If you would be free from harmful knowledge, abstain from association with bad men and impure books. Abstain from sinful lusts. Let not unholy thoughts enter your mind or sensual desires dwell in your heart. Strike at the roots of sin which are down in the heart, keep the inner life free from everything unholy, and look well after the desires and thoughts which come trooping up to attack the citadel of the soul. But not only must you stop sinning. The lusts must be destroyed. Not only must the inner life be well looked after, the outer life also must not be neglected. Banish the sinful lusts and abstain from all appearance of evil. For sake the evil which is hidden from the eyes of men, as it lies deep in the soul, lay aside these forms of sin which are expressed in sinful actions, and also abstain from all kinds of acts which are not sinful, but seem so to men, as the appearance may lead weak souls astray. There are some classes of sin which wear the aspect of righteousness, and there are virtues which may be worn with the appearance of sin. As birds in building their nests are careful to avoid the use of bright-colored materials, which would help their enemies in locating them, so should the followers of Christ give no oppor tunity to their foes to attack them, nor injure their friends by engaging in any practices which may be harmless in themselves but may be made stepping-stones to a vicious life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Character Before we can understand how Character is to be built up, we must come to a distinct faith in its reality; we must learn to feel that it is more real than anything else that we possess; for surely that which is eternal is more real than that which is merely temporal it may, indeed, be doubted whether that which is merely temporal has any just claim to be called real.
