His impeccable research stems from an academic background whose credentials include a bachelor of science degree from the University of Georgia, a master's degree from the Asian Institute of Management, and a doctorate in business from the University of the Philippines. The data he gathered for his doctoral dissertation was the genesis of his 1987 book "The Marcos File", which exposed the Marcos regime for its corruption and excesses. It was while working on a book about Marcos' hidden wealth that he stumbled on the story of a treasure hunt headed by Marcos. His close friendship with the national security director provided him access to the corridors of power. He was asked to find out the truth, both about the legendary treasure and the Marcos gold. His central thesis is that the "householder" is a necessary element in Buddhism and that the giving of gifts, which creates merit and presupposes the doctrine of karma, mediates the relation between the householder and the monk. Penner argues that the omission of the householder - in his view one-half of what constitutes Buddhism as a religion - is fatal for any understanding of Buddha's life or of the Buddhist tradition. This boldly revisionist and deeply learned work will be of interest to a wide range of scholarly and lay readers.

Witness to a melting pot of passing monks, merchants, and armies, the Buddhas embodied the intersection of East and West, and their destruction by the Taliban in 2001 provoked international outrage. Llewelyn Morgan excavates the layers of meaning these vanished wonders hold for a fractured Afghanistan. Carved in the sixth and seventh centuries, the Buddhas represented a confluence of religious and artistic traditions from India, China, Central Asia, and Iran, and even an echo of Greek influence brought by Alexander the Great’s armies. By the time Genghis Khan destroyed the town of Bamiyan six centuries later, Islam had replaced Buddhism as the local religion, and the Buddhas were celebrated as wonders of the Islamic world. Not until the nineteenth century did these figures come to the attention of Westerners. That is also the historical moment when the ground was laid for many of Afghanistan’s current problems, including the rise of the Taliban and the oppression of the Hazara people of Bamiyan.
