Book The Budapest Connection

Download or read book The Budapest Connection written by Elizabeth J. Jung and published by . This book was released on 2000-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story or history was written to correct one of the many wrongs in the recording of American History. It is a fact that the victors in battle or those in power in peace write the history of past events to support their views of what should have happened versus the cold hard facts. This is the story of the Stewards, Cooks and Messboys who manned that branch of naval service. The story of the men who fought and served under trying circumstances. The story of men who served their country when to do so was to endure, or to appear to accept the humiliating admission of one's own inferiority. In this story can be found the heretofore-unwritten chapters of one phase of the Negroes' march toward freedom in America, written by a man who participated in it.

Book The Hero of Budapest

  • Author : Bengt Jangfeldt
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

Download or read book The Hero of Budapest written by Bengt Jangfeldt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Raoul Wallenberg - the Swedish businessman who, at immense personal risk, rescued many of Budapest's Jews from the Holocaust and subsequently disappeared into the Soviet prison system - is one of the most fascinating episodes of World War II. Yet the complete story of his life and fate can only be told now - and for the first time in this book - following access to the Russian and Swedish archival sources, previously not used. Born into a wealthy Swedish family, Wallenberg was a moderately successful businessman when he was recruited by the War Refugee Board to manage the rescue mission of thousands of Hungarian Jews. Once in Budapest, he created and distributed so called 'protective passports' (or Schutz-Pass) among the Jewish population, thus managing to save up to 8,000 people. Through the 'safe houses' and clandestine networks that he established around the city, many thousands more were saved from the concentration camps. Yet, when Budapest was liberated by the Red Army in January 1945, Wallenberg was arrested and taken to Moscow. One of the reasons for his arrest was that the Soviets could not understand the nature of his mission: formally he was a Swedish diplomat but he worked for an American agency. On the basis of previously unseen Soviet sources, Jangfeldt has been able to reconstruct the events surrounding Wallenberg's arrest almost hour by hour and, for the first time, he presents a highly plausible theory about the reasons why Wallenberg was arrested and what happened to him after he disappeared. With access to previously unpublished material, Bengt Jangfeldt provides the first complete account of Wallenberg's life - from his childhood in Sweden to his disappearance in a Russian jail - and sheds important new light on one of the greatest heroes of World War II. This is a thrilling tale of intrigue, espionage and heroism which will captivate all readers of modern European history.

Book Budapest and New York

Download or read book Budapest and New York written by Thomas Bender and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 1994-01-13 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little over a century ago, New York and Budapest were both flourishing cities engaging in spectacular modernization. By 1930, New York had emerged as an innovating cosmopolitan metropolis, while Budapest languished under the conditions that would foster fascism. Budapest and New York explores the increasingly divergent trajectories of these once-similar cities through the perspectives of both Hungarian and American experts in the fields of political, cultural, social and art history. Their original essays illuminate key aspects of urban life that most reveal the turn-of-the-century evolution of New York and Budapest: democratic participation, use of public space, neighborhood ethnicity, and culture high and low. What comes across most strikingly in these essays is New York's cultivation of social and political pluralism, a trend not found in Budapest. Nationalist ideology exerted tremendous pressure on Budapest's ethnic groups to assimilate to a single Hungarian language and culture. In contrast, New York's ethnic diversity was transmitted through a mass culture that celebrated ethnicity while muting distinct ethnic traditions, making them accessible to a national audience. While Budapest succumbed to the patriotic imperatives of a nation threatened by war, revolution, and fascism, New York, free from such pressures, embraced the variety of its people and transformed its urban ethos into a paradigm for America. Budapest and New York is the lively story of the making of metropolitan culture in Europe and America, and of the influential relationship between city and nation. In unifying essays, the editors observe comparisons not only between the cities, but in the scholarly outlooks and methodologies of Hungarian and American histories. This volume is a unique urban history. Begun under the unfavorable conditions of a divided world, it represents a breakthrough in cross-cultural, transnational, and interdisciplinary historical work.

Book Transregional Connections in the History of East Central Europe

Download or read book Transregional Connections in the History of East Central Europe written by Katja Castryck-Naumann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transregional connections play a fundamental role in the history of East-Central Europe. This volume explores this connectivity by showing how people from eastern and central parts of Europe have positioned themselves within global processes while, in turn, also shaping them. The contributions examine different fields of action such as economy, arts, international regulations and law, development aid, and migration, focusing on the period between the middle of the nineteenth century and the end of the Cold War. The authors uncover spaces of interaction and emphasize that internal and external entanglements have established East-Central Europe as a distinct region. Understanding the connectedness of this subregion is stimulating for the historiography of East-Central Europe as it is for the field of global history.
