Book Inelastic Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells Under External Pressure

Download or read book Inelastic Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells Under External Pressure written by B. Sureshwara and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper the inelastic effect on the buckling load of a clamped shallow spherical shell subjected to an external pressure is investigated. A variational principle derived from a set of rate equilibrium equations and expressed in terms of Lagrangian variables is used to determine the critical pressure. This pressure is determined by a step-by-step numerical process based on a Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The spherical shell is idealized as a structure composed of four thin load-carrying layers of equal thickness and made of a work hardening material. The numerical results of the present analysis compare favorably with those of available experimental work. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin shells are very popular structures in many different branches of engineering. There are the domes, water and cooling towers, the contain ments in civil engineering, the pressure vessels and pipes in mechanical and nuclear engineering, storage tanks and platform components in marine and offshore engineering, the car bodies in the automobile industry, planes, rockets and space structures in aeronautical engineering, to mention only a few examples of the broad spectrum of application. In addition there is the large applied mechanics group involved in all the computational and experimental work in this area. Thin shells are in a way optimal structures. They play the role of·the "primadonnas" among all kinds of structures. Their performance can be extraordinary, but they can also be very sensitive. The susceptibility to buckling is a typical example. David Bushnell says in his recent review paper entitled "Buckling of Shells - Pitfall for DeSigners": "To the layman buckling is a mysterious, perhaps even awe inspiring phenomenon that transforms objects originally imbued with symmetrical beauty into junk".

Book Buckling of a Complete Spherical Shell Under Uniform External Pressure

Download or read book Buckling of a Complete Spherical Shell Under Uniform External Pressure written by Harry E. Rauch and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-linear axisymmetric bucking of a complete spherical elastic shell under uniform external pressure is treated numerically. Particular attention is given to the lower critical load, which is the theoretical least failure load. Among the new results are the evaluation of this load for thinner shells than those treated in the existing literature; in particular, the values 6.73% and 4.9% of the classical linear buckling loads are obtained for the radius-to-thickness ratios 100 and 200, respectively. The shapes of the buckled shells are computed for the first time in an unexpected hint that there is an asymptotic (ratios-to-thickness ration-independent) buckled shape. Numerical solution is by means of spectral (Galerkin) expansions of up to 60 modes in associated Legendre functions of order one applied to the quadratically non-linear version of E. Reissner's equations. (Author).

Book Buckling and Postbuckling of Beams Plates and Shells

Download or read book Buckling and Postbuckling of Beams Plates and Shells written by M. Reza Eslami and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains eight chapters treating the stability of all major areas of the flexural theory. It covers the stability of structures under mechanical and thermal loads and all areas of structural, loading and material types. The structural element may be assumed to be made of a homogeneous/isotropic material, or of a functionally graded material. Structures may experience the bifurcation phenomenon, or they may follow the postbuckling path. This volume explains all these aspects in detail. The book is self-contained and the necessary mathematical concepts and numerical methods are presented in such a way that the reader may easily follow the topics based on these basic tools. It is intended for people working or interested in areas of structural stability under mechanical and/or thermal loads. Some basic knowledge in classical mechanics and theory of elasticity is required.

Book Influence of Residual Stresses and Thermal Gradients on Mechanism of Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells

Download or read book Influence of Residual Stresses and Thermal Gradients on Mechanism of Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells written by Megumi Sunakawa and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains results of a theoretical and experimental investigation of the influence of residual stresses and thermal gradients on stability of shallow spherical shells. Basic equations, thermoelastic problems for spherical shells, taking a large deformation into consideration, are derived. Assuming 'damped' axisymmetrical deformation pattern, solution for the stability of spherical shell subjected to external pressure is presented. Good agreement between the theoretical and previous experimental results is obtained. The effects of residual stresses and thermal gradients on stability of spherical shells subjected to external pressure are determined. These effects are of considerable significance, and should be taken into account in application. Experiments indicating the effects of residual stresses have been performed for 'inverted' shells subjected to symmetrical and eccentric concentrated loads.

Book The Axisymmetric Buckling of Initially Imperfect Complete Spherical Shells

Download or read book The Axisymmetric Buckling of Initially Imperfect Complete Spherical Shells written by Tatsuzo Koga and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical investigation of the axisymmetric buckling of complete thin-walled spherical shells under uniform external pressure is undertaken to determine the effect of axisymmetric initial imperfections. In the analysis, the complete spherical shell is divided into two parts; the shallow cap in which the initial imperfection exists, and the remaining portion of the shell most of which deforms in simple contraction. The rotation of the meridian of the cap is assumed in the form of a polynomial function. Four matching conditions are enforced at the juncture of the cap and remainder. The total potential energy of the complete spherical shell is minimized in accordance with the Rayleigh-Ritz approximation method. Two types of initial imperfections are studied; one is an axisymmetric dimple, and the other is a spherical region whose radius of curvature is greater than that of the perfect spherical shell. The maximal values of the pressure parameter rho in the equilibrium state before snap-through were calculated for various values of the geometric parameter lambda, which is proportional to the angular extent of the imperfection for a given radius-to-thickness ratio, and the imperfection amplitude parameter delta, which is the ratio of the initial deviation of the shell mid-surface at the axis of rotation to the wall-thickness. The results of numerical computations show that for all values of delta the lowest buckling pressure is reached when lambda is about 4. (Author).

Book Elastic and Plastic Buckling of Spherical Shells Under Various Loading Conditions

Download or read book Elastic and Plastic Buckling of Spherical Shells Under Various Loading Conditions written by Shahin Nayyeri Amiri and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spherical shells are widely used in aerospace, mechanical, marine, and other industrial applications. Accordingly, the accurate determination of their behavior becomes more and more important. One of the most important problems in spherical shell behavior is the determination of buckling loads either experimentally or theoretically. Therefore, in this study some elastic and plastic buckling problems associated with spherical shells are investigated. The first part of this research study presents the analytical, numerical, and experimental results of moderately thick and thin hemispherical metal shells into the plastic buckling range illustrating the importance of geometry changes on the buckling load. The hemispherical shell is rigidly supported around the base circumference against horizontal translation and the load is vertically applied by a rigid cylindrical boss (Loading actuator) at the apex. Kinematics stages of initial buckling and subsequent propagation of plastic deformation for a rigid-perfectly plastic shell models are formulated on the basis of Drucker- Shield's limited interaction yield condition. The effect of the radius of the boss used to apply the loading, on the initial and subsequent collapse load is studied. In the numerical model, the material is assumed to be isotropic and linear elastic perfectly plastic without strain hardening obeying the Tresca or Von Mises yield criterion. Finally, the results of the analytical solution are compared and verified with the numerical results using ABAQUS software and experimental findings. Good agreement is observed between the load-deflection curves obtained using three different fundamental approaches. In the second part, the Southwell's nondestructive method for columns is analytically extended to spherical shells subjected to uniform external pressure acting radially. Subsequently finite element simulation and experimental work shown that the theory is applicable to spherical shells with an arbitrary axi-symmetrical loading too. The results showed that the technique provides a useful estimate of the elastic buckling load provided care is taken in interpreting the results. The usefulness of the method lies in its generality, simplicity and in the fact that, it is non-destructive. Moreover, it does not make any assumption regarding the number of buckling waves or the exact localization of buckling.
