From this English county the Pattens are said to have migrated to Ayrshire, Scotland; thence the family of our interest went to Ireland, where James Patten, earliest known ancestor, was located in Count Monaghan. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical and Genealogical Essay Upon the Family and Surname of Buchanan: To Which Is Added a Brief Inquiry Into the Genealogy and Present State of Ancient Scottish Surnames, and More Particularly of the Highland Clans The family of Bcamx has had the honor to produce a great many persons, who make a very considerable figure in our history; and as it is natural for us to be curious about the smallest circumstances-relating to great men, those of that temper will here find what in a great measure may serve to. Gratify their curiosity. Besides, this family is now grown so very numerous, that it can not but be of very great use to those of the name, or that are any way allied to it, to have a full and distinct account of its affairs. So that though perhaps this treatise may not be of such general use, yet it will at least serve them for whom I principally intended it, to wit, those of the name and family of Buchanan. Book The Buchanans of 1790

Download or read book The Buchanans of 1790 written by James Buchanan and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the Buchanan families of the United States in 1790, when our young nation was taking the first census of its residents. Who were these Buchanans? The official census lists more than 150 families with twenty-one different spelling variations for the name. Among the families were 740 white individuals, four black freedmen and 219 slaves. Most Buchanans were farmers, some were merchants; and later, in the 1800s, one Buchanan became president. Interestingly, one black freedman owned slaves. This book is not intended to be a complete genealogy, but some information is included where it was located. Rather, the concept is to show the geographic distribution and movement of Buchanan families in a static slice of time correlating to the years in close proximity to the first census of the United States. New England: Vermont; Middle States: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware; Upper South: Maryland and Virginia; Deep South: North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia; and, Trans-Appalachia: Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee Buchanans are covered. In August 1814, census records that were stored in the State Department in Washington, D.C., were burned by the British when they sacked the city and burned government buildings; other records where lost by the various states. For this reason, the census had to be reconstructed using alternate records available for the period around 1790. The reconstructed records (for those states in which the original census was lost) and local sources add many more families and slaves to the story. A full-name index adds to the value of this work.
