Book excerpt: This dual-language edition of Beowulf is for the general readers' enjoyment of the poem as well as a study guide for students of English language and literature. To meet this dual purpose, the book provides the two texts running in parallel. The general readers can enjoy the poem by reading the translation; but the serious students of English can lean on the translation as a prop while studying the original text line after line. For the students of Old English, who wish to attain a thorough understanding of the original lines, the Textual and Explanatory Notes will be an indispensable apparatus: these notes discuss diverse scholarly interpretations on the problematic phrases and lines before the translator offers his own opinion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the poems in classical Chinese composed by Yi Byŏng-ho (1870‒1943), born toward the end of the Chosŏn Dynasty, the last monarchy in Korea, to live through the period of privation of her national sovereignty. Yi Byŏng-ho composed poems that reveal the undying spirit of poesy reasserting the beauty of life, despite the spiritual torpor that inevitably devastated the life of the whole nation during the darkest age in all Korean history. One of the last Korean poets who composed in classical Chinese before modern Korean poetry started resorting to the vernacular and the national orthography, han-gŭl, Yi Byŏng-ho was a poet who excelled in poetic composition in classical Chinese, not only in strict conformity to the classical Chinese poetic tradition, but with a strong touch of uniquely Korean sentiments. Sung-Il Lee, a scholar of English literature, has rendered his grandfather's poems in classical Chinese into English. Though his field of study is far from the literary domain the original works belong to, he has overcome the linguistic chasm lying between classical Chinese and English, while attaining spiritual reunion with his grandfather.

Book The Ghost Tiger s Lament

Book excerpt: As a child, Ashne swore two oaths. With her adopted sister Zsaran she made a pact: one would never die without the other. To their mistress, the queen, who plucked them both out of the inhospitable marshlands, she vowed eternal loyalty. When a tiger spirit from a rival kingdom kidnaps the queen's only daughter, Ashne, now a trusted bodyguard, follows in pursuit despite knowing that her sword will be of little use against the ancient magic steadily reawakening across the land. But it is her human adversaries who prove more dangerous as she navigates the shifting political landscape in a kingdom still recovering from a decades-long war: a foreign sorcerer, an eccentric apothecary, an ambitious bandit chief — perhaps even Zsaran, who has long awaited a chance to achieve freedom for both herself and Ashne. Soon Ashne can no longer reconcile her love for her sister and her devotion to the women they have both served since childhood. Yet she must bring back the princess regardless. If not for love and duty, for her people's continued survival against the encroachment of powerful foreign conquerors, before whose ravenous ambitions the squabbles of two tribal kingdoms amount to dust. The Ghost Tiger's Lament is the first book of a historical fantasy series set in a world based loosely on the cultures of late Bronze Age China, during the time of Confucius and Sun Tzu.
