Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “To be up all night in the darkness of your youth but to be ready for the day to come…that was what going to Brown felt like.” —Jeffrey Eugenides In celebration of Brown University’s 250th anniversary, fifty remarkable, prizewinning writers and artists who went to Brown provide unique stories—many published for the first time—about their adventures on College Hill. Funny, poignant, subversive, and nostalgic, the essays, comics, and poems in this collection paint a vivid picture of college life, from the 1950s to the present, at one of America’s most interesting universities. Self - activity and interest go hand in hand. Each story can be played can be acted by the children. The same can be said when teaching the word and the sentence. In teaching the visible form of run, let the child run; of sweeping, let him go through the motions of sweeping. In the silent reading of an action sentence, to test Whether the child knows the meaning of What he has silently read, let him put the thought of the sentence into action. Take, fer example, the sentence The baby frog came hopping back to his mother. Ask a child to show what the baby frog did. If the child has read the thought of the sentence, he will hop! Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Breathers--an irreverent novel about fate, destiny, and the karmic consequences of getting involved with humans. Over the past few thousand years, Fabio has come to hate his job. As Fate, he's in charge of assigning the fortunes and misfortunes that befall most of the human race-the 83% who keep screwing things up. Frustrated with his endless parade of drug addicts and career politicians, Fate has to watch Destiny guide her people to Nobel Peace Prizes and Super Bowl MVPs. To make matters worse, he has a five- hundred-year-old feud with Death, and his best friends are Sloth and Gluttony. And worst of all? He's fallen in love with a human. Getting involved with a human breaks Rule #1, and about ten others, setting off some cosmic-sized repercussions that could strip him of his immortality-or lead to a fate worse than death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A teen girl hiding the scars of a past relationship finds home and healing in the words of strong Black writers. A beautiful sophomore novel from a critically acclaimed author and poet that explores how words have the power to shape and uplift our world even in the midst of pain. "A true embodiment of the term Black Girl Magic.” –Booklist When Darius told Angel he loved her, she believed him. But five weeks after the incident, Angel finds herself in Brooklyn, far from her family, from him, and from the California life she has known. Angel feels out of sync with her new neighborhood. At school, she can’t shake the feeling everyone knows what happened—and that it was her fault. The only place that makes sense is Ms. G’s class. There, Angel’s classmates share their own stories of pain, joy, and fortitude. And as Angel becomes immersed in her revolutionary literature course, the words from Black writers like Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, and Zora NEale Hurston speak to her and begin to heal the wounds of her past. This stunning novel weaves together prose, poems, and vignettes to tell the story of Angel, a young woman whose past was shaped by domestic violence but whose love of language and music and the gift of community grant her the chance to find herself again.

Book excerpt: The brand-new novel from the author of Lucky Bastard and Breathers—“one of today’s very best writers” (Jonathan Maberry). Does your lifestyle not fit the person inside you? Then try someone else on for size! Call him whatever. Call him whomever. He can be any legally authorized fictional character or dead celebrity he wants for six to eight hours, simply by injecting a DNA-laced cocktail into his brain stem. It’s called Big Egos and it’s the ultimate role-playing fantasy from Engineering Genetics Organization and Systems (aka EGOS.) And, as one of the quality controllers for EGOS, he’s the ultimate ego-tripper, taking on more artificial identities than advisable—and having a hell of a time doing it. Problem is, he’s starting to lose the ability to separate fact from fiction. His every fantasy is the new reality. And the more roles he plays, the less of him remains. Sure, it’s dangerous. Yes, he’s probably losing his mind. Okay, hundreds of others could be at risk. But sometimes who you are isn’t good enough. And the truth is, reality is so overrated. . . . With his insightful wit, smart humor, and electrifying narrative, acclaimed author S. G. Browne takes readers on a satirical and provocative trip into the not-too-distant future, where, for some, pretending to be someone you’re not is just another day at the office.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Browne Readers, Vol. 2: First Year-Second Half Preliminary blackboard reading is not necessary in this grade. The story may be read directly from the printed page. Keep in mind that the aim of the reading lesson is to secure speed and accuracy in the process of obtaining the thought of the written page, and that silent reading is the great means to this end. In all the stories the thought element must precede the correct oral expression. Arouse an intelligent interest in the story before taking up the reading itself. Talk about the story and the setting; discuss the characters in the story and let the children discuss the pictures. Correlate your work in nature and ethics with the reading lesson. As each sentence or paragraph is read aloud, make sure that its full meaning is understood. Give to the children as much related information as is practicable. Unknown Words. The teacher is referred to the Re view Words following the stories in the reader, wherein are listed, in the order in which they first appear, all the new words, both sight and phonetic, that occur in the reader. A glance through the lists shows the teacher the phonetic elements that must be drilled upon and the sight words that must be taken up each day. The child must learn the phonetic words from the phonetic drill which precedes the reading lesson. If he cannot get thesight words through adroit questioning by the teacher, he must be told what they are. Every word in the new sentence or paragraph must be known to every child before the sentence or paragraph is read aloud. Particular stress is laid upon the word drill after the reading lesson. This does not contradict the statement Every word in the new sentence or paragraph must be known to every child before the sentence or paragraph is read aloud. It refers simply to the drudgery of the reading lesson, the drill on sight words, the object of which is to impress the visible form of the unknown word so thor oughly upon the mind of the child that he will recognize the word when he sees it in new surroundings. If fifteen or twenty minutes are spent in trying to teach isolated words before anything is said about the content of the reading lesson, the child is tired out; his mind is not in the best condition to take up the reading itself. Let the child's interest be aroused by the story or content at the beginning of the reading period. The drill on the new words of the lesson will be more spirited because thought has been associated with these words. The following method of taking up the reading lesson is suggested for use with this reader I. Phonetic drill upon the new and unknown pho netic words that occur in the story to be read. 11. Conversation; picture study; discussion of the characters in the story; the setting of the story; a short talk about the story, perhaps no more than the title of the story will suggest.
