Book excerpt: The Brown Fedora is essentially a love story set against the backdrop of the Second World War (1939 to 1945). The story begins with the impulsive and unplanned meeting between Rebecca and James. Their initial encounter is played out in front of two rival teams at their annual cricket match. The unfolding story reveals how James and his family were acrimoniously subjected to the unwelcome and unwanted attention of a ruthless German spy ring that operated covertly in the heart of England, before and during the Second World War. After the callous and brutal murder of JamesÕs mother at the hands of the cruel spy ring, the devastating effects of her murder initiated a crippling stroke which totally incapacitated JamesÕs father. The overwhelming consequences of this felonious act drove James to take up the mantle of his fatherÕs work and to track down and eradicate the German spy ring. In doing so, he crosses into the remorseless world of spying and espionage.

Book excerpt: The 'hero,' Ernest Cabbage, is angry with his life, even before the day begins and his wife, Rita, awakens him. Work is scarce and he only took the job as a used car sales man at Rita's urging. His boss, Nick, doesn't make it any easier for him by being a mean old drunk. Rita annoyed him by reminding him that Nick said he would fire him if he was late one more time, so he reluctantly arose and headed out for work. But as fate would have it, being late wasn't what changed his life. What happened, in fact, was that Ernest found a Brown Fedora left on the bus stop bench which he claimed for his own, since no one else admitted to owning it. When he arrived at work sporting the Fedora, Nick looked enviously at his appearance and proceeded to order him about with his usual tirade, increasing Earnest's anger. The day went unusually well, however, as Earnest sold several cars and even cheated Nick out of a little money by jacking up the selling prices and pocketing the difference. He went home happy, bringing gifts and telling Rita how lucky his day had been. He even contemplated quitting the job. But Rita convinced him to return and wait until things were a bit better off. Ernest cheerfully left for work the next day. He even inquired if anyone had left a hat on the bench, but no one laid claim to one. With his lucky headpiece on, he had another profitable day selling cars and irritating Nick. Meanwhile, a down on his luck insurance broker, out of a job and plagued by a disintegrating marriage, is missing his lucky hat. The one he just bought at a Goodwill store while looking for clothes for job interviews. He had needed something to change his life from what it had sunk to since he gotten fired, lost his wife, and ended up in a small studio, visiting bars with other local losers looking for work – and he thought he'd found it in the Fedora. After he wore it, he impressed the boss at his first interview and was hired on the spot, starting the very next day. But in the interval, he lost the hat. Then his new car broke down, he lost his temper, lost his aura, and subsequently lost his job when the new boss saw a crazed 'nut' coming to work instead of the well polished, articulate man he had hired the day before. Angry, depressed and vengeful, he blamed his problems on the loss of the Fedora, and determined to find it at all costs and regain his good luck. He discovered in his acutely agitated state that the mirror in his room had a personality that actually demanded he do just that. The mirror had a Voice that became his own voice and began to control his life. Finding that it was Ernest who had his hat, he kidnapped Rita and her daughter and held them as ransom for Ernest to return the hat. Nick, however, had by now stolen the Fedora, and Ernest could not find it to return it to The Voice. And Nick, benefiting from a run of luck with it, certainly was not in any mood to return it. Shortly after Ernest confronted him about the hat, Nick is shot by a disgruntled former customer, and although Ernest is able to retrieve the hat, The Voice refused to deal with him now for fear of police involvement. Ernest cannot find Rita and his daughter but also cannot return home for fear of being arrested, so he takes a room in a local motel. Making friends with a pizza delivery boy, Joey, the two proceed to discover where Rita and his daughter, are held. By smart thinking and planning they eventually rescue the captives and The Voice is tried and convicted of kidnapping, resulting in a long prison sentence. But Jonathan, The Voice, now has time to plan revenge and has one thing on his mind – to get his Brown Fedora back.

Book The Mules of Monte Cassino

Download or read book The Mules of Monte Cassino written by Jim DeFilippi and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacrifice, slaughter, and stupidity. The Battle for Monte Cassino, in southern Italy during the bitter winter of 1943-1944, was the most gruesome, spine-wilting, pointlessly devastating battle of America's Twentieth Century, perhaps in all of America's history. The enormity of the mistakes of Monte Cassino was misunderstood and overlooked then and remains under-reported and ignored to this day. Three hundred and fifty thousand dead soldiers, along with no accurate count of the civilian dead, for no reason other than the hubris and egos of men with golden stars pinned on their shoulders, hobnobbing with Popes, Presidents and Prime Ministers. Priceless and irreplaceable art treasures were destroyed for no better reason than incompetence and impatience. Military advantage gained from all of this: nothing. This is the story of that battle told from the fox holes and from the blood-stained rivers, with the hands of wounded and drowning comrades clutching at your legs as you try to swim back to shore. One survivor of the devastation said, "We were all of us mules."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Led by bestselling author Tracy Price-Thompson, Other People's Skin is a collection of four novellas by four leading African American women writers that acknowledges, examines, and conquers the skin and hair topic among African American women. In Other People's Skin, Tracy Price-Thompson and TaRessa Stovall, along with fellow authors Elizabeth Atkins, and Desiree Cooper, take on one of the most controversial topics within the African American community: the self-hatred caused by intraracial prejudice and the ongoing obsession with skin tone and hair texture. It begins with TaRessa Stovall's "My People, My People," in which a successful advertising executive acquires firsthand knowledge of prejudice when her clients insist on using light-skinned rather than dark-skinned models. Next comes Tracy Price-Thompson's award-winning story "Other People's Skin," a tale set in 1970s Louisiana, where a dark-skinned young woman must come to terms with the bigotry of her light-skinned family. "New Birth," by Desiree Cooper reveals the intense roles that money, class, and skin color play in the intraracial relationship between Catherine, a wealthy, light-skinned lawyer, and Lettie, her dark-skinned house cleaner. Finally, Elizabeth Atkin's "Take It Off" tells the story of a biracial girl who hides her coarse, braided hair from her friends at a mixed-race university in Detroit. Other People's Skin is the most innovative and varied anthology of sisterhood and unity to date. Each novella entertains, challenges, and, most important, offers healing to the reader—no matter what her race, skin tone, or state of mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era when many in the science community feel that science is under attack, In Defense of Science explains why ordinary citizens need to have an understanding of science, its methods, and its groundbreaking discoveries. The authors debunk several misconceptions of science and scientists, and advocate that science is an integral part of society and everyday life. This book begins with an introduction to science and its basic concepts, including a brief and entertaining history of science and scientific discoveries, before taking on current views of science in society. It surveys the many sources of our ideas of science, including pop culture, classics of literature, news media, and political discourse. Much of the information from these sources tends to mislead, and the only way to guard against such misinformation is to become scientifically literate, and promote scientific literacy in society. The book therefore delves into the reasons that so many people do not understand basic scientific principles and do not keep up with scientific breakthroughs, and finishes by examining the current state of science education. It includes many resources for further reading, and is presented in an engaging and entertaining way.

Book excerpt: The large white man known as Pete told Juan in Spanish to tie the young male reporter’s feet together with his belt so he could hold the struggling female reporter down. Juan did what he was told as he removed his belt and tightly cinched Cal’s feet together and sat him on the ground. Pete, cool and calm, pointed the gun at the young man’s head and fired. Ginger screamed in horror as she knew her life would soon be over as well. “Hold her down, Mexican. I’m going to shoot this bitch,” Pete said again in Spanish. Juan grabbed her by her hair as she was still screaming and crying hysterically. Her body fell limp as Juan did his best to hold her up. Pete stepped back and raised his pistol. Hundreds of miles north of the rugged, barren desert of southern New Mexico sat the governor in his mansion in Santa Fe. The newly elected governor of New Mexico, Zack Wilson, had a problem. The state’s most highly regarded law enforcement agency was dirty. The governor needed to find the state police officer or officers working with the Mexican cartels before the FBI took action or the media found out. The governor turned to an old friend to find the corrupt officers, sending a messenger to contact the former police officer turned recluse, Ignacio Quintana. Quintana, now living in the canyon country of western New Mexico, had grown to like his cows more than people and did his best to stay away from town and his former profession. So when he watched as his daughter rode up the dirt road on her horse with a strange-looking “gringo” from back east, it drew his ire and ended his retirement.
