Book excerpt: This occult tale of esoteric initiation is rightly renowned for its description of the Western mystical tradition, skillfully sheathed within an enthralling adventure story. Set in Napoleonic times, 'Brother of the Third Degree' records the saga of Alphonso Colono, a Mexican born in Paris, as he pursues his quest for truth and love amid the intrigues and machinations of Europe's grand political chessboard. Book excerpt: First published in 1894, Brother Of The Third Degree is a work of esoteric allegorical fiction that was written at the height of the Golden age of Occultism. This work of fiction serves as an inspirational tale of initiation, intrigue, and a mysterious brotherhood that not only closely guards the secrets of occulted wisdom but turns the wheels of history itself. Garver paints an intricate picture of the spiritual battle that rages beneath the veneer of geopolitical events ¿ that ancient conflict between the forces of Love and Light and the armies of Hatred and Darkness. Within its pages are contained the loftiest notions of human spiritual development, perpetuated by his so-called ¿White Brotherhood,¿ an idealistic incarnation of ancient Freemasonry. While thoroughly embellished with the floral prose common to his era, the image of Freemasonry that Garver creates is as it should be: educational, active, and of the utmost moral fortitude.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you've ever seen an episode of Law and Order, you can probably recite your Miranda rights by heart. But you likely don't know that these rights had their roots in the case of a young Chinese man accused of murdering three diplomats in Washington DC in 1919. A frantic search for clues and dogged interrogations by gumshoes erupted in sensational news and editorial coverage and intensified international pressure on the police to crack the case. Part murder mystery, part courtroom drama, and part landmark legal case, The Third Degree is the true story of a young man's abuse by the Washington police and an arduous, seven-year journey through the legal system that drew in Warren G. Harding, William Howard Taft, Oliver Wendell Holmes, John W. Davis, and J. Edgar Hoover. The ordeal culminated in a sweeping Supreme Court ruling penned by Justice Louis Brandeis that set the stage for the Miranda warning many years later. Scott D. Seligman argues that the importance of the case hinges not on the defendant's guilt or innocence but on the imperative that a system that presumes one is innocent until proven guilty provides protections against coerced confessions. Today, when the treatment of suspects between arrest and trial remains controversial, when bias against immigrants and minorities in law enforcement continues to deny them their rights, and when protecting individuals from compulsory self-incrimination is still an uphill battle, this century-old legal spellbinder is a cautionary tale that reminds us how we got where we are today and makes us wonder how far we have yet to go.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the near future (early twentieth century), this 1894 occult novel is a tale of eternal love, albeit chaste. The protagonist, Alphonso Colono, a Mexican, is born into a family with connected with the Illuminati, here called the 'White Brotherhood.' He moves to Paris and is initiated into the occult group, where he meets the woman who is to become his soulmate: Iole. They meet St. Germain and other adepts, help a modern Napoleon unite Europe, and eventually pass beyond the mortal realm. This novel may not have had the impact of Zanoni, which it bears superficial resemblances to. It does show that the modern complex of beliefs about the Illuminati was complete in all of its aspects in the last decade of the 19th century. The wandering eternal masters, the use of occult power to leverage political change, and the strange powers of the adepts, are present and accounted for. These concepts would later become dogma for groups such as the "I AM" Activity and its modern successors. Garver's vision of a united Europe at peace in the 20th century, (after a period of war) was a good prediction, even if the mechanism he proposes is a bit absurd. The narrative itself is still a good read, despite the overblown period prose. This long-forgotten predecessor to the Da Vinci Code moves along nicely and has memorable characters. Not many 19th century occult fictions are half as readable.
