Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Brooklyn Medical Journal, Vol. 19: Published Monthly by the Medical Society of the Country of Kings In conclusion, although mirror writing has been already recognized as physiologic for the left hand and as being often met with in those who use that hand for writing, it can further be assumed to be present potentially and for both hands in every individual who has learned to write. As the graphic centres of the left mid frontal convolution store up graphic motor pic tures, analagous pictures reversely formed are accumulated in the corresponding centre on the right. The former may then be called into play with either left or right hand to produce ordinary writing, while similarly a right graphic centre mav be correlated with different motor centres to produce mirror writing in either hand.' Both of these graphic picture centres may also be corre lated with the appropriate muscle motor centres to produce mirror or ordinary writing through the medium of the toes, lips, elbows, or any other part to which suitable apparatus can be attached. From notes and specimens obtained the follow ing have been selected as being of special interest for presentation. Each one is the result of a first attempt and was written without any practise; the writers are all strongly right-handed. No. I shows six specimens obtained from the members of one family through three generations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Brooklyn Medical Journal, Vol. 1: January-June, 1888 While the antiseptic idea has revolutionized and extended surgery, it has vastly increased the importance of hospitals, for a considerable pro portion Of its achievements are with very great difficulty attainable under any other conditions than those found in a perfectly equipped and wisely ordered hospital. In addition to this the ability to fully carry out anti septic principles ih private work requires much preliminary training and experience, and this is only to be Obtained satisfactorily either by actual work in hospitals, or by frequent and close study of the work as done by hospital surgeons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Brooklyn Medical Journal, Vol. 3: January-December, 1889 Granting that this affection is rare compared with its supposed frequency in former times, there is no doubt that it occurs as a pri -mary inflammation often enough to call for a large share of attention. Nothing new has been brought out regarding the pathology, except that chronic cellulitis, which has been a cherished notion with some, has been in the past few years denied an existence by good observers. I have also observed a peculiar complication of this affection which has not been noticed before, so far as I know, viz., an extension of the inflammation from the broad ligament to the sheath of the psoas muscle: the pus from the primary abscess burrowing outwards and upwards. Download or read book Brooklyn Medical Journal Vol 11 written by Joseph H. Raymond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brooklyn Medical Journal, Vol. 11: January-December, 1897 The studies of 0rd, Horsley, Semon, and others, have done much to advance our knowledge of the disease. The resemblance between myxedema in man, and the condition produced in ani mals by the removal of their thyroids was the incentive to Profes sor Horsley's experiments, which were almost demonstrative of the relationship between cachexia strumipriva and myxedema. Schiff and others showed that the effects of removal of the thyroid gland in animals could be modified by transplanting the thyroid glands. These observations induced Horsley to suggest trans planting thyroid glands in the bodies of man suffering from myx edema. Amelioration was produced by this procedure, but the glands were absorbed; besides the unpleasantness and possible risk in such a method. A glycerin-extract ofthe thyroid gland was next used on animals, after thyroidectomy, and the favorable results led brown-sequard to suggest that it might be useful in the myxe dema of man. Dr. Murry of Newcastle. England, appears to have been among the first, if not the first, to use the method. The difficulty in making an extract that would be stable, and the objection patients had to the hypodermic injection of the remedy, soon led to a trial, first of the cooked glands of sheep, and later to the dried and powdered gland, by Hector mackenzie. Since this preliminary work, of which only a briefsketch is here given, many cases have been reported of this disease in man and its treatment by thyroid gland. Space will not permit a reference to the published articles and cases, and we can give but a brief reference to the interesting discussions which have arisen as to the relationship, if any exist, between myxedema and other morbid conditions, such as Graves' disease, acromegaly, etc. The object of this article is to relate brie y the histories of a few cases of myxedema in young persons and the results of treatment with sheep's thyroids. I have ln variably used the desiccated thyroid prepared by Parke, Davis Co.; it has proved quite effective in these cases. Download or read book The Brooklyn Medical Journal Vol 4 written by Joseph H. Raymond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-07 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Brooklyn Medical Journal, Vol. 4: Published Monthly by the Medical Society of the County of Kings; January-December, 1890 Hydrocele varicocele, and sarcocele have to be excluded. Still, in the vast majority of cases, the history and the aggregation of symptoms, subjective and objective, will guide to a correct opinion. The condition which is most deceptive is the presence of an enlarged lymphatic. These often appear suddenly, particularly below Poupart's ligament, at the point where a femoral hernia might be found. When sure that the tumor is hernia, the next question is, What variety is it? Much of success in treatment, either by reduction or Operation, depends on a correct answer. Remember that the tendon of the external Oblique muscle, from the anterior superior spine Of the ilium to the Spine of the pubic bone, is the ligament Of Poupart. Remember that the external pillar of that triangular Opening, called the external ring, is attached to this spine of the pubes, while the internal pillar is attached at the symphysis, this inner pillar being also a part of the external Oblique tendon. Thus it is plain that the external ring is almost in the median line Of the body. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
