Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Desus & Mero are smarter and funnier than everyone writing books.”—Shea Serrano “I will never write anything as hilarious as they have. I give up.”—Malcolm Gladwell “These motherf***ers make me laugh until I choke.”—Jia Tolentino NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR A wild, hilarious guide to life from the hosts of the hit late-night show Desus & Mero and the Bodega Boys podcast Who could have predicted that, after a fateful meeting in a Bronx summer school in the 1990s, Desus & Mero would turn their friendship into an empire of talking to each other. And it’s no surprise—tuning in to them is like listening to the funniest, smartest people you know dissect a topic and then light it on fire. Now they’ve written the most essential guide to life of this century*, in which all the important questions are asked: How do I talk to my kids about drugs if I do them, too? What are the ethics of ghosting in a relationship? How do I bet on sports? How should I behave in jail? How much is too much to spend on sneakers? Is porn really that bad for me? As they put it: “We want to share all we’ve learned, after years in the Bronx streets, with you: the people. So with a lifetime spent building up a plethora of information from trials and tribulations and a handful of misdemeanors, we decided to write this book—a sequel to the Bible, or maybe to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, depending on how big a nerd you are. Let this book be your North Star.” *NO REFUNDS

Book The Concept of Community

Download or read book The Concept of Community written by Harold DeRienzo and published by Ipoc Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through this book it is my sincere hope that far from providing any absolute answers to problems confronting community that I provide the conceptual tools necessary to engage in community work and appreciate the value of that work and its place in our larger society. But a more pressing dilemma presents itself - the dilemma that community, as a valid and meaningful social construct, is losing relevance. Community represents the best of what people can accomplish when they work together. But in practice, community is irreconcilable with prevailing economic, political and social trends. When I was younger, I believed that it was possible to develop a political framework and from that political framework could and would emerge the complementary and supportive social and civic institutions necessary to support, protect and evolve that framework. I have come to believe that politics, institutional arrangements, and social organization instead follow from the dominant economy. As such, in an economy dominated by attributes dependent upon a pliant, mobile workforce, there is little practical tolerance for social organization beyond the individual, the family and church groups. It is my sincere hope that this book serves as a wake-up call to the valuable attributes of community as a social construct, but also how community is a necessary predicate to popular democracy - the preservation of which should represent a cause that we treat as a valuable legacy, instead of an underlying social circumstance we all take for granted while all its meaning and relevance is slowly being dismantled.

Book Ladies and Gentlemen the Bronx Is Burning

Download or read book Ladies and Gentlemen the Bronx Is Burning written by Jonathan Mahler and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2006-03-21 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By early 1977, the metropolis was in the grip of hysteria caused by a murderer dubbed "Son of Sam." And on a sweltering night in July, a citywide power outage touched off an orgy of looting and arson that led to the largest mass arrest in New York's history. As the turbulent year wore on, the city became absorbed in two epic battles: the fight between Yankee slugger Reggie Jackson and team manager Billy Martin, and the battle between Ed Koch and Mario Cuomo for the city's mayoralty. Buried beneath these parallel conflicts, one for the soul of baseball, the other for the soul of the city, was the subtext of race. The brash and confident Jackson took every black myth and threw it back in white America's face. Meanwhile, Koch and Cuomo ran bitterly negative campaigns that played upon urbanites' fears of soaring crime and falling municipal budgets. These braided stories tell the history of a year that saw the opening of Studio 54, the evolution of punk rock, and the dawning of modern SoHo. As the pragmatist Koch defeated the visionary Cuomo and as Reggie Jackson finally rescued a team racked with dissension,1977 became a year of survival but also of hope. -- Publishers description.

Book Bitter Bronx Thirteen Stories

Download or read book Bitter Bronx Thirteen Stories written by Jerome Charyn and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longlisted for the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award Brooklyn is dead. Long live the Bronx! In Bitter Bronx, Jerome Charyn returns to his roots and leads the literary renaissance of an oft-overlooked borough in this surprising new collection. In Bitter Bronx, one of our most gifted and original novelists depicts a world before and after modern urban renewal destroyed the gritty sanctity of a land made famous by Ruth, Gehrig, and Joltin' Joe. Bitter Bronx is suffused with the texture and nostalgia of a lost time and place, combining a keen eye for detail with Jerome Charyn's lived experience. These stories are informed by a childhood growing up near that middle-class mecca, the Grand Concourse; falling in love with three voluptuous librarians at a public library in the Lower Depths of the South Bronx; and eating at Mafia-owned restaurants along Arthur Avenue's restaurant row, amid a "land of deprivation…where fathers trundled home…with a monumental sadness on their shoulders." In "Lorelei," a lonely hearts grifter returns home and finds his childhood sweetheart still living in the same apartment house on the Concourse; in "Archy and Mehitabel" a high school romance blossoms around a newspaper comic strip; in "Major Leaguer" a former New York Yankee confronts both a gang of drug dealers and the wreckage that Robert Moses wrought in his old neighborhood; and in three interconnected stories—"Silk & Silk," "Little Sister," and "Marla"—Marla Silk, a successful Manhattan attorney, discovers her father's past in the Bronx and a mysterious younger sister who was hidden from her, kept in a fancy rest home near the Botanical Garden. In these stories and others, the past and present tumble together in Charyn's singular and distinctly "New York prose, street-smart, sly, and full of lurches" (John Leonard, New York Times). Throughout it all looms the "master builder" Robert Moses, a man who believed he could "save" the Bronx by building a highway through it, dynamiting whole neighborhoods in the process. Bitter Bronx stands as both a fictional eulogy for the people and places paved over by Moses' expressway and an affirmation of Charyn's "brilliant imagination" (Elizabeth Taylor, Chicago Tribune).
