Book The Eddie Cantor Story

Download or read book The Eddie Cantor Story written by David Weinstein and published by Brandeis University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This absorbing biography chronicles the life and work of one of the most important entertainers of the twentieth century. Eddie Cantor (1892-1964) starred in theater, film, radio, and television. His immense popularity across a variety of media, his pride in his Jewish heritage, and his engagement with pressing political issues distinguished him from other headliners of his era. Paying equal attention to Cantor's humor and politics, Weinstein documents his significance as a performer, philanthropist, and activist. Many show business figures quietly shed their Jewish backgrounds or did not call attention to the fact that they were Jewish. Cantor was different. He addressed the vital issues of his times, including acculturation, national identity, and antisemitism. He was especially forceful in opposing Nazism and paid a price for this activism in 1939, when a sponsor cancelled the actor's radio program. In this carefully researched book, Weinstein uncovers sketches and routines filled with Jewish phrases, allusions, jokes, songs, and stories. Cantor frequently did not mark this material as "Jewish," relying instead on attentive audiences to interpret his coded performances. Illustrated with thirty photographs, The Eddie Cantor Story examines the evolution, impact, and legacy of Cantor's performance style. His music and comedy not only shaped the history of popular entertainment, but also provide a foundation for ongoing efforts to redefine Jewish culture and build community in contemporary America.

In Edwardian England, Lady Adelaide Azalea Margaret de Morville, Mrs. Hugh Becket, lately of the Cape Colony, was born the daughter of an Earl, but is now the widow of a commoner. She straddles two worlds, speaks fluent German, and can ride, hunt and shoot. Her talents draws the eye of spymaster William Melville, who recruits her to help him fight a shadow game with German agents both at home and aboard, as Europe heads toward an inevitable conflict… The first seven novelettes of the Adelaide Becket Edwardian espionage series in one set: 1.0: The Requisite Courage 2.0: The Rosewater Debutante 3.0: The Unaccompanied Widow 4.0: The Lavender Semaphore 5.0: The Broadcloth Midnight 6.0: The Salinghall Error 7.0: The Indecent Agent A historical suspense espionage omnibus. ___ Praise for Adelaide Becket’s Adventures: I’d say what is most striking about these stories is the almost haunting sense of place and time, skillfully woven and engaging all of the senses for a most enjoyable and immersive reading experience. Yayyyy!!!! Lots Of Lady Adelaide At Once! From beginning to end this set captivates, entertains, is emotional, and just plain great writing. Don’t miss it. Adele is amazing, strong, female, smart, and simply incredible. Lady Adele is cheeky, daring, courageous and a character worthy of following in this delightful series. I absolutely loved the intelligent and complex character layers revealed by Adele as she experiences each new encounter in her life as a spy. Love this compilation! She explains the sights, sounds and smells in a way that makes you feel like you are there. Each story is a refined historical version of a swift and exciting spy thriller which left me feeling like I'd been caught up in the middle of a suspense mystery novel with only the best bits to read! Definitely a series to be read in order, from the start, to appreciate how much Adele has changed and grown into her role as well as the introductions to the characters around her. And, by the way, the titles are fascinating. To understand why, you have to read the books! It’s a delightful series, and worth the read. One of the most impressive aspects of this series of novelettes is the seemingly effortless way the author establishes not only the aura of the Edwardian era, but also the social mores and attitudes of that time: “Now, daytime hems were an inch or two higher, showing off ones’ boots and — among the most daring of ladies — an inch of ankle, too.” ____ Tracy Cooper-Posey is a #1 Best Selling Author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Midnight Folk introduces readers to Kay Harker, the orphaned boy who is also the hero of John Masefield’s classic Christmas fantasy, The Box of Delights. Kay lives in a vast old country house, and is looked after by an unpleasant duo: the oily and egregious Sir Theopompous and the petulant and punitive Sylvia Daisy Pouncer. In her zeal to educate Kay on the finer points of Latin grammar, Sylvia Daisy has even taken away all of Kay’s toys. Life seems very dull, until out of an old family portrait steps Kay’s great-grandfather, a sea captain, who, if legend is to be believed, made off with a fabulous treasure. Soon Kay is engaged in a thrilling quest that begins each night as the clock strikes twelve, taking him into the enchanted and dangerous world of the Midnight Folk: pirates, highwaymen, talking animals, and a gang of witches led by none other than Sylvia Daisy (in cahoots, as in The Box of Delights, with the arch-villain Abner Brown). In the end, it is that ragtag team of old toys that rallies to support Kay and save the day. A book to set beside C.S. Lewis’s Narnia tales and Joan Aiken’s Wolves of Willoughby Chase—not to mention the Harry Potter series—The Midnight Folk is a wonderful and enthralling contribution to the great English tradition of children’s literature, beloved by adults and children alike.

A Time Travel Vampire Romance Novel ___ Praise for Kiss Across Worlds: In a nutshell, there is a LOT of action, as well as some head spinning discussion of time travel across different timelines. Ms. Cooper-Posey always makes you think while reading her stories. This is #7 in the series, but there is no “just another episode” to be found here. Wow, again Wow. I swear this author must be a time traveler because this story is filled with such awesome details. I don't think I even got up for water! And as always with Cooper Posey's characters they feel so real that its easy to get pulled in to their world for a while. The writing is superb and the story is really interesting. This is one series that I'm going to have to read the rest of. I loved Remi with his hints of vulnerability along side his bad persona. Time traveling, human trafficking and a desperate race against evil. I can never get bored with this series. Everything is so interesting and mind blowing. I've been following Tracy Cooper-Posey for a while now, and she never disappoints. Damn, she can write! To start with, I love history, I'm an academic historian, and her books are really well documented. What a great book, I just loved it. It's like being on a roller coaster, the action never stops and the time travel details are awesome. The characters are wonderfully developed and believable. The suspense is very real and I lost a lot of sleep reading this book lol The chemistry between the three main characters is off the charts and I can't say enough about the steamy sex screens...phew!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book for 2011 A Library Journal Top Ten Best Books of 2011 A Boston Globe Best Nonfiction Book of 2011 Bestselling author Tony Horwitz tells the electrifying tale of the daring insurrection that put America on the path to bloody war Plotted in secret, launched in the dark, John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry was a pivotal moment in U.S. history. But few Americans know the true story of the men and women who launched a desperate strike at the slaveholding South. Now, Midnight Rising portrays Brown's uprising in vivid color, revealing a country on the brink of explosive conflict. Brown, the descendant of New England Puritans, saw slavery as a sin against America's founding principles. Unlike most abolitionists, he was willing to take up arms, and in 1859 he prepared for battle at a hideout in Maryland, joined by his teenage daughter, three of his sons, and a guerrilla band that included former slaves and a dashing spy. On October 17, the raiders seized Harpers Ferry, stunning the nation and prompting a counterattack led by Robert E. Lee. After Brown's capture, his defiant eloquence galvanized the North and appalled the South, which considered Brown a terrorist. The raid also helped elect Abraham Lincoln, who later began to fulfill Brown's dream with the Emancipation Proclamation, a measure he called "a John Brown raid, on a gigantic scale." Tony Horwitz's riveting book travels antebellum America to deliver both a taut historical drama and a telling portrait of a nation divided—a time that still resonates in ours.
