Download or read book Hope and Despair written by Anirudh Deshpande and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope and Despair: Mutiny, Rebellion and Death in India recounts the story of the thousands of Indians-sailors and forgotten working class individuals-who braved British bullets and bayonets on the streets of Bombay and Karachi, during the Royal Indian Navy (RIN) Mutiny and the attendant civil rebellions of 1946. World War II in India was marked by inflation, food shortages, the great Bengal Famine and rising nationalism. While the Indian laboring classes bore the brunt of the War in the Indian cities and villages, millions of others became wartime recruits in the hope of a better future. The end of the War, however, brought neither prosperity nor peace to India. Thousands of demobilized servicemen entered the employment market precisely in the months when wage and job-related strikes rocked Indian cities almost every day. Great social anxiety about the future gripped the Indian masses and created a collective consciousness of rebellion woven around the slogans and symbols of wartime Indian nationalism. The INA trials and strikes in the Royal Indian Air Force in 1945 paved the way for the political upheaval of February 1946.

Book excerpt: The sheer size and influence of the British Indian Army, and its major role in the Allied War effort between 1939 and 1945 on behalf of a country from which it was seeking independence, maintains its fascination as a subject for a wide variety of historians. This volume presents a range of papers examining the Indian Army experience from the outbreak of world war in 1939 to the partition of India in 1947. With contributions from many of those at the forefront of the study of the Indian Army and Commonwealth history, the book focuses upon a period of Indian Army history not well covered by modern scholarship. As such it makes a substantial contribution across a range of subject areas, presenting a compendium of chapters examining Indian Army participation in the Second World War from North Africa to Burma, plus a variety of other topics including the evolution of wartime training, frontier operations, Churchill and the Indian Army, the Army's role in the development of post-war British counterinsurgency practice, and of particular note, several chapters examining aspects of the partition in 1947. Book Indianization the Officer Corps and the Indian Army

Download or read book Indianization the Officer Corps and the Indian Army written by Chandar S. Sundaram and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Short-listed for the Society for Army Historical Research UK's Templer Medal Best First Book Prize, 2020** In the Indian Army of the British Raj, the officer corps was “reserved for the governing race”— in other words, the British. Only in 1917, a mere thirty years before India won its freedom, did the Raj permit Indians into the Army’s officer corps, thus slowly beginning its Indianization. Yet it is often forgotten that this decision was the culmination of a hundred-year-long debate. Based on meticulous archival research in Britain and India, Indianization, the Officer Corps, and the Indian Army breaks new ground by offering readers the first detailed account of this generally forgotten debate. It traces the myriad schemes and counter-schemes the debate generated, the complex twists and turns it took, and how it engaged both British policymakers anxious to maintain control as well as nationalist Indian leaders agitating for greater self-government. This work also offers insights into the martial races concept, the 1857 uprising, and the impact of Anglo-Indian ideology upon the Indian Army. Clearly written and carefully argued, it is an original and defining contribution to military/war and society history, the history of colonial India and its army, the history of British empire, the history of racism, and civil-military relations.
