Book The British Navy Its Making and Its Meaning Classic Reprint

Download or read book The British Navy Its Making and Its Meaning Classic Reprint written by Ernest Protheroe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Navy, Its Making and Its Meaning NO apology is needed for offering to the youth of the British Empire a new book on the British Navy. It is as true to-day as it was in the spacious times of Queen Elizabeth that Whosoever commands the sea commands the trade, and whosoever commands the trade of the world commands the riches of the world, and, consequently, the world itself. These were the prophetic words of Sir Walter Raleigh, and echoes of them may be found down the pages of British sea power and history. Sir Edward Grey, in 1909, stated the same proposition for our generation in the following words: The Navy is the common security of the Whole Empire. If it ever fail to be that, it will be no use for us to discuss any other subjects, and the maintenance of the Navy in that position must therefore be the first care, not only of us at home, but of the self-governing Dominions beyond the seas and the greatest of. All naval writers, Admiral Mahan, tells us in inspiring language that Nelson's far-distant, storm-beaten ships, upon which the Grand Army never looked, stood between it and the dominion of the world. The world has never seen a more impressive demonstration of the influence of sea-power upon its history. The outbreak of the great war of 1914 confirms and reinforces the views of our statesmen and administrators in the near and distant past. Every night in the early weeks of that war the British public slept securely in the knowledge that the silent work of our magnificent fleet was guarding its own ports and blocking the ports of the enemy and they woke every morning to resume their business as usual, in full confidence that the spirit and tradition accumulated during the centuries would serve to guarantee for centuries to come the integrity of our homeland and the unity of our Empire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Royal Navy, Vol. 1 of 5: A History From the Earliest Times to the Present Yet, even if British students were in the habit of thoroughly digesting the ordinary British histories which are within their reach, they would still know little about the nature and services of the British Navy. Our greater historians deal very sparingly with those subjects. Many of them seem to have been deterred by an exaggerated estimate of the attendant difficulties, or by an impression that naval history is far too technical to be understood by lay people. Others have altogether failed to awaken to the importance of the matter, and have, by that very failure, convicted themselves of incompetence. As for the popular historians, the compilers of school histories, text-books, and such-like, they have for the most part, and indeed almost without exception, bungled, where they have not shamefully scamped, the facts of our naval story. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy: Its Place in British History Of these sovereigns in turn was checked in his soaring plans by British Sea Power. For this reason war between Britain and foreign Powers has always been war on foreign soil. Other nations when invaded must fight on their own soil. The British soldier is conveyed to battle on the back of a British sailor. The inconvenience and suffering of war at home have thus been Saved or confined to the pay ment of taxes. Behind the protection of the navy, generations have grown up ignorant of war. For that reason many good people believe that kind words and courtesy to foreigners are much cheaper than, and just as useful as, a strong and efficient navy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Britain's Naval Power: A Short History of the Growth of the British Navy, From the Earliest Times to Trafalgar AT the instance of my old friend Mr. Aldous, so well known for his services on h.m.s. Britannia, I warmly recommend the work of his colleague, Mr. Hamilton Williams, to readers of every class. To the rising generation especially it should be valu able. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Navy, Vol. 5: Its Strength, Resources, and Administration Under the title 'British Seamen' the present volume first appeared in 1877. The Merchant Service, as our main resource for the reinforcement of the Navy, falls properly within the scope of a general review of naval affairs; and a republication of the author's work forms an appropriate conclusion to a series of papers on the British Navy. In reprinting, quotations have been omitted, statistics have been corrected, a new chapter on recent legislation affecting the seaman has been added, and the entire work revised by Mr. F. W. Haine, of the Board of Trade. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Story of the British Navy From the Earliest Times to the Present Day Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the British Navy From the Earliest Times to the Present Day Classic Reprint written by E. Keble Chatterton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the British Navy, From the Earliest Times, to the Present Day The fewest words will suffice to indicate the aims and scope of this history. One of our most popular admirals not long since remarked that what had always surprised him was the extraordinary ignorance or indifference to naval matters on the part of the public in general all over the world. Now, when it is realised that no nation in the world possesses such a golden record of sea-service as ours; no country has stored up in its archives such a wealth of magnificent data, it is unfortunate that such indifference or ignorance should exist. Without wishing to trespass on the thorny field of politics it must be conceded that an island nation such as ours depends for its very existence on its ships of war. As far back as the ninth century it was Alfred the Great who saw clearly that he who would be secure on land must first be supreme on sea. In Elizabethan times no less a person than Sir Walter Raleigh wrote that "whosoever commands the sea, commands the trade: whosoever commands the trade of the world, commands the riches of the world, and consequently the world itself." Tennyson, our great poet-laureate of the nineteenth century, emphasised the same idea: - "You, you, if you shall fail to understand What England is, and what her all-in-all, On you will come the curse of all the land, Should this old England fall Which Nelson left so great."
