This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroic Deeds of the British Navy in the Great War When Jack Tar abandoned his tarpaulin petticoat his backbone remained where it had always been, and it is still stiff. If the smell of hemp has been succeeded by the reek of oil, his nose is still keen on the scent of the enemy. To bring him into the fight quicker, the creaking of the sails has given place to the rhythm of the turbine. Jack's immediate environment has altered but the sea has not, and Jack is very much like the sea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Navy and the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Navy and the War Classic Reprint written by J. R. Thursfield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy and the War Bruins have made good their escape in the very teeth of vastly superior British squadrons. Against all this we have next to nothing to set except the smart little action in the Heligoland Bight, which was forthwith heralded as a glorious victory. Of course we have captured many helpless German merchantmen, and seized some undefended or weakly defended German colonies, but there is nothing very glorious about that. Altogether, it is a sorry tale of inaction, disappointment, and frequent reverse.' To all these crabbed and cross-grained critics I would reply, 0 yo of little faith, how little you know of the things which belong to your peace! You betray an equal ignorance of naval history and of the nature of naval warfare. Do you think that a fleet, however powerful and confident, can engage the enemy if he will not give it the opportunity? Do you think that any nation can ever go to war without suffering occa sioual disappointments and partial reverses Do you not know that in the Great Revolutionary War, which began in 1793, it was more than a year before the first fleet action was fought by Lord Howe on the glorious first of June 1794 Do you forget that throughout that war, both before Trafalgar and after, British merchant-vessels were captured by the French in hundreds every year, scores of them being snapped up even in the Channel day by day, to the very end of the war? Do you not know that the Seven Years' War, the most successful that England ever fought, began with the loss of Minorca and the trial and death of Byng? The Navy has done nothing, forsooth Why, it has done everything, literally everything; for without it nothing could have been done that has been done) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Admirals of the British Navy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Admirals of the British Navy Classic Reprint written by Francis Dodd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Admirals of the British Navy If the Army, on the contrary, is so much under the microscope, it is largely because it has few or no mysteries. We know the rules. Armies are made up of men like ourselves (only better). They advance as we do, by putting one foot before another, on the solid earth. Their movements are followable, even if we cannot always understand them daily bulletins are printed in the public Press. But the Navy keeps its secrets. Not only have we no notion where it is, but we should be little the Wiser as to its inner purposes if, scanning the illimitable and capricious waves, it should be our fortune to descry here and there a flotilla of its dark grey hulls. Even in harbour most men pointing out a cruiser to their children say That's a dreadnought -a state of confusion bred and fostered by the strange, dark, dangerous element in which the Navy has its being. So much for the causes of our odd willingness to forego one of the chief privileges of British birthright, which is to criticise, even to belittling, all that is ours. But there is justification, too, as the state of the sea to-day testifies. Thanks to the Navy there is at this moment hardly an enemy ship at large on the surface of the waters. The Kaiser's darling ironclads are idle as painted ships upon a painted ocean: not even an ocean, a canal. Our troops in millions have crossed to the Continent. We have enough to eat. Book The Heroic Record of the British Navy

Download or read book The Heroic Record of the British Navy written by Archibald Spicer Hurd and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heroic Record of the British Navy: A Short History of the Naval War 1914-1918 In the years immediately preceding the Great War, already so hard to reconstruct, it was not uncommonly suggested that the British seafaring instinct had begun to decline. In our professional navy most thinkers had confidence, as in a splendid machine ably manned; but, as regarded the population as a whole, it was feared that modern industrialism was sapping the old sea-love. That this has been disproved we hope to make clear in the following pages - a first attempt, as we believe, to give, in narrative form, a reasonably complete and consecutive history of the naval war. We have indeed gone further, for we have tried to show not only that the spirit of admiralty has survived undiminished, but that we have witnessed such a re-awakening of it, both in Great Britain and America, as has had no parallel since the days of Elizabeth. We have also tried to make clear that, in a thousand embodiments, in men and boys fallen or still living, it has shone with a spiritual even more than any material significance; and that it has again declared itself to be the peculiar expression in world-affairs of the English-speaking races. Nor was the little apparent interest shown, just before the war, in the navy and the navy's exercises very remarkable. Download or read book The Royal Navy Vol 5 of 6 written by William Laird Clowes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Royal Navy, Vol. 5 of 6: A History From the Earliest Times to the Present The present volume contains the record of the whole of the great naval struggle with the empire of the first Napoleon, from the beginning of the renewed war in 1803, when, indeed, Napoleon had not yet assumed the imperial dignity, up to the summer of 1815, when the peace of Europe was secured by the deportation of the wonderful Corsican to St. Helena. I had hoped also to include in the volume the history of the war between Great Britain and the United States of America, 1812-1815; but, owing to the considerable length to which it necessarily extends, I have found myself unable to do so without swelling this section of the book to extravagant proportions. Governor Roosevelt's account of the American War, therefore, will occupy the first place in the next and final volume of the work. Nor do I much regret that I am not now able to include it, seeing that the contents of the present volume are already, so far as they go, complete in themselves, and that, although the two were waged simultaneously, our wars with France and with America in the early years of the nineteenth century had little or no connection one with the other, and were of fundamentally different origin and character. I am personally responsible for the whole of the instalment of the History now given to the reader. It was originally arranged that my friend, Mr. H. W. Wilson, should contribute the record of the minor operations of the war of 1803 - 15; and he actually wrote so much of it as brought the story up to nearly the close of the year 1810 but he was unable to revise what he had written, or to complete the account and that task, in consequence, remained for me. I much regret that pressure of other engagements should have thus deprived me of his co-operation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy: Its Place in British History Of these sovereigns in turn was checked in his soaring plans by British Sea Power. For this reason war between Britain and foreign Powers has always been war on foreign soil. Other nations when invaded must fight on their own soil. The British soldier is conveyed to battle on the back of a British sailor. The inconvenience and suffering of war at home have thus been Saved or confined to the pay ment of taxes. Behind the protection of the navy, generations have grown up ignorant of war. For that reason many good people believe that kind words and courtesy to foreigners are much cheaper than, and just as useful as, a strong and efficient navy.
