What would the world think of an Annual Publication, Wth promifed acom pleat Hifiory of the Year 1783, to be publilhed at the beginning of next December? Would it not be immediately exclaimed, This is abfurdity in the extreme the pmpofers of fuch a work mufi'certainly have lo their fonfes And is there not at leait equal ab/itrdity, equal want if reafon, in calling a Mont/sly Publication, which does not contain a ling e article of intelligence beyond the twenty-fourtb or twenty of July, 4 Magazine for yuly. Book The British School of Sculpture c 1760 1832

Download or read book The British School of Sculpture c 1760 1832 written by Sarah Burnage and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British School of Sculpture, c. 1760?1832 represents the first edited collection exploring one of the most significant moments in British art history, returning to centre stage a wide range of sculpture considered for the first time by some of the most important scholars in the field. Following a historical and historiographical introduction by the editors, situating British sculpture in relation to key events and developments in the period, and the broader scholarship on British art more generally in the period and beyond, the book contains nine wide-ranging case studies that consider the place of antique and modern sculpture in British country houses in the period, monuments to heroes of commerce and the Napoleonic Wars, the key debates fought around ideal sculpture at the Royal Academy, the reception of British sculpture across Europe, the reception of Hindu sculpture deriving from India in Britain, and the relationship of sculpture to emerging industrial markets, both at home and abroad. Challenging characterisations of the period as 'neoclassical', the volume reveals British sculpture to be a much more eclectic and various field of endeavour, both in service of the state and challenging it, and open to sources ranging from the newly arrived Parthenon Frieze to contemporary print culture.

Book Writing the Lives of Painters

Download or read book Writing the Lives of Painters written by Karen Junod and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing the Lives of Painters explores the development of artists' biographies in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Britain. During this period artists gradually distanced themselves from artisans and began to be recognised for their imaginative and intellectual skills. The development of the art market and the burgeoning of an exhibition culture, as well as the foundation of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768, all contributed to redefining the rank of artists in society. This social redefinition of the status of artists in Britain was shaped by a thriving print culture. Contemporary artists were discussed in a wide range of literary forms, including exhibition reviews, art-critical pamphlets, and journalistic gossip-columns. Biographical accounts of modern artists emerged in a dialogue with these other types of writing. This book is an account of a new literary genre, tracing its emergence in the cultural context of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It considers artistic biography as a malleable generic framework for investigation. Indeed, while the lives of painters in Britain did not completely abandon traditional tropes, the genre significantly widened its scope and created new individual and social narratives that reflected and accommodated the needs and desires of new reading audiences. Writing the Lives of Painters also argues that the proliferation of a myriad biographical forms mirrored the privileging of artistic originality and difference within an art world that had yet to generate a coherent 'British School' of painting. Finally, by focusing on the emergence of individual biographies of British artists, the book examines how and why the art historiographic model established by Georgio Vasari was gradually dismantled in the hands of British biographers during the Romantic period.
