Book The British Isles Classic Reprint

Download or read book The British Isles Classic Reprint written by G. F. Bosworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Isles The amount of land and water on the surface of the earth is by no means equal. The area of the water is about two and a half times the area Of the land, or, putting it another way, two-sevenths of the earth's sur face is land, while the sea occupies five-sevenths of the surface. The arrangement Of the land and water is peculiar. Look at a map of the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres. There is plainly far more land in the Northern Hemisphere. The Southern Hemisphere is mainly water. Careful measurements would Show that there is actually thirteen times more land in the Northern than in the Southern Hemisphere. There is another very strange thing about the arrange ment of the land and water on the face of the earth that you would never guess at first sight. The antipodes of a piece of land is practically always a piece of water. Thus on the opposite side of the globe from North America is the Indian Ocean, Australia is the antipodes of the North Atlantic Ocean, Europe and Africa are exactly opposite the Pacific Ocean, there is an ocean at the North Pole but a continent exactly opposite at the South Pole. This curious result has not come about merely by chance, but the explanation is too difficult for young scholars. The land surface of the earth is not smooth, but is ridged and wrinkled in certain parts, and the wrinkles are called mountain chains. The greatest mountain system in the world stretches under many different names from the west Of Europe to the east of Asia. It begins in the Pyrenees, and continues in the Alps, the Caucasus, the Persian mountains, and the Himalaya. Book A Geography of the British Isles Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Geography of the British Isles Classic Reprint written by Lionel William Lyde and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geography of the British Isles In this Series I have tried to embody the experience of a teacher and of an examiner. This experience has led me to several conclusions, which will, I believe, be confirmed by most practical teachers who are interested in Geography as a subject of real educational value: - 1. That map in text-books cannot generally be used directly with the text, as it is impracticable to hare the book open in more than one place at a time; bat that their presence in books has led to a regrettable neglect of the Atlas. 2. That an excessive variety of type and other mechanical devices for classification confuse the average pupil. 3. That most text-books contain much which would be better learned from the Atlas, or which is only an unnecessary tax on the memory. Consequently, this Series contains no maps and little variety of type; and I have intentionally avoided mentioning, e.g. exact heights, distances or sizes, small industries, and unimportant places. Wherever any definite comparisons are made, they are intended only for reference, and not to be learnt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Pictorial Geographical Readers

Download or read book Pictorial Geographical Readers written by Longmans Green and Co and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial Geographical Readers: The British Isles Let us look at the Globe and try to find out the British Isles. There they are, two little patches of red in the blue ocean. The larger patch is called Great Britain, the smaller patch Ireland. The northern part of Great Britain is known as Scotland the southern part is called England, and the western part Wales. Great Britain, Ireland and the adjacent islands make up the British Isles. There are many other red patches on the globe. They represent countries which form part of the British Empire. Look at that large square with the little dark square in the corner. The small square represents the size of the British Isles, the large square the size of the British Empire. If you measure them, you will find that the British Empire is over eighty times as large as the British Isles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Weeks in the British Isles It is the fashion to smile at the idea of seeing anything in a foreign country in a shorter time than three months. This has constructed a bar rier across the road to broader culture and accomplishment of many a person. As a matter of fact, more can be seen abroad in three weeks than can be seen at home in an entire summer. Distances are shorter between noteworthy objects. Book A Bachelor s Rambles

Download or read book A Bachelor s Rambles written by Chas J. Butler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bachelor's Rambles: Through the British Isles Hen I was a small boy we lived near a family who came from County Wicklow, Ireland. I was always intensely interested in hearing them describe the beauties of that country. A desire took hold of me to see the land beyond the broad Atlantic. This desire grew stronger as I heard and read descriptions of the British Isles in later years, but I always con sidered Old Ocean rather treacherous, and never felt like trusting myself to her care. Not until within a few months prior to taking the trip did I begin.to think more favorably of her. The Sunday previous to sailing was very stormy, and calculated to make one rather pensive who was about to launch out on the uncertainties of the great deep. I spent a part of the day with some friends, one of whom, seating himself at the organ, began playing and singing for my especial benefit. His selections were of such a character as to make me feel I was spending my last Sabbath on earth; that somewhere between dear old America and the shores of England, Old Ocean would cover me over and keep me hidden away until Gabriel blew his trumpet. However, I was undaunted by the dark pic ture presented, and took the never - to-be-regretted trip, my enjoyment of which, together with some historic facts, I have endeavored, in my homespun way, to bring before my readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Itinerant in the British Isles When there are so many books of travel clamor ing for the public eye, there may seem a degree of temerity in venturing another into the arena. We do not claim for our modest little volume any distinctive merit. We do not hold it up as a model. The reader may find much to criticize, but we hope he may find something to interest and please, and we crave his indulgence. Our only excuse for the publication of the little volume is the desire to preserve in this form the record of a visit to the home land so pregnant with pleasure - a desire stimulated by the re quests of friends for copies of the book as soon as in print. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Art in the British Isles This little book makes no pretence to add to the knowledge of the student, or to throw any new light on any single subject. It is addressed to those who, having made little or no study of art and its history, may be glad to know, not with any idea of practising art, or even of devoting much time to its study, the part it has played in the history of their country, and to form, as part of the equipment of a good citizen, some estimate of the place it ought to take in any civilisation worthy the name. The kind of information given in the book is dictated in part by the writer's experience of what University Extension and other audiences, fresh to the consideration of art, find interesting and readily assimilate. To arouse an interest in art generally, and in our own art in particular, is the aim, then, of the following pages; an those who, after reading them, may desire more detailed and extended knowledge, will find what they require in such books as those named at the end of the volume. Download or read book The British Isles written by Hugh Kearney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugh Kearney's classic account of the history of the British Isles from pre-Roman times to the present is distinguished by its treatment of English history as part of a wider 'history of four nations'. Not only focusing on England, it attempts to deal with the histories of Wales, Ireland and Scotland in their own terms, whilst recognising that they too have political, religious and cultural divides. This new edition endeavours to recognise and examine contemporary multi-ethnic Britain and its implications for 'four-nations' history, making it an invaluable case study for European nationhood of the past and present. Thoroughly updated throughout to take into account recent social, political and cultural changes within Britain and examine the rise of multi-ethnic Britain, this revised edition also contains a completely new set of illustrations, including sixteen maps.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rainfall of the British Isles I have frequently been struck by the need for a book summarizing the results of many years of labour in compiling and studying statistics of the rainfall of the British Isles. A very large number Of papers and articles on various aspects of the subject have been published from time to time, and it has been dealt with in a more or less cur sory manner in many books on meteorology and physiography; but on being asked by engineers, teachers, and students for reference to any volume giving general information on the subject, I have constantly found myself at a loss'.
