The Rhizopoda, in common with all primitive life forms, are unicellular. It is desirable, in order to make clear the significance of this term, to say a few words regarding the structure, etc., of the simple cell. Be reduced to 30 or less. It was therefore suitable for a single volume. A letter written to Mr. Tait, the main purport of which was to ask him if the figures or any of them could be coloured, brought a reply direct from Mr. Cash, which is here given. My friend Mr. Tait writes to me with reference to my Introduction to the Study of the British Freshwater Rhizopoda, ' offered to the Ray Society for publication, and your enquiry as to the colouring of the figures. I am decidedly of opinion that the figures should be coloured, and am so interested in this being faithfully done that I would undertake to submit nearly the whole of the species to fresh microscopical examination for the purpose, during the coming year. Several draw ings kindly supplied by Prof. G. S. West are also given, and in a few instances the published figures of species by their authors are reproduced; the remain ing drawings were made by myself from either living or mounted specimens. In the time at my disposal it was not possible to obtain records from all parts of the British Isles, but owing to the kindness of friends much material was examined from districts which I was unable to visit.
