Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Case in French Congo: The Story of a Great Injustice, Its Causes and Its Lessons The story unfolded in the following chapters is one without precedent, so far as I am aware, in the relationship between civilized communities. In modern times, at any rate, nothing in any remote degree approaching it has been recorded. True, the treatment meted out to British merchants in French Congo is somewhat analogous with the proceedings recently employed by the officials of the Congo State towards the Austrian merchant, the late Mr. Rabinek. But even here the comparison is not wholly sound, because the actions of the Congo State authorities have long since debarred that so-called State from any claim to the epithet of civilized. The Humble Memorial of the Incorporated Chamber of Commerce of Liverpool Respectfully Sheweth, 1. That your Memorialists have large interests throughout the whole of the West Coast of Africa, and that all questions affecting the prosperity of that Coast are of the utmost importance to them. 2. One of the most important West African questions, in the interests both of Europeans and of the Natives, is the maintenance, as far as possible, of Freedom of Trade in all the regions of the Coast. [ 189] 3. Your Memorialists have consistently advocated Freedom of Trade in West Africa, and have always viewed with the greatest satisfaction that portion of the Berlin Act of 1885 which relates to Freedom of Trade in the Congo Region. 4. The following are the Articles of that Act to which your Memorialists specially wish to call your Lordship's attention: Article I., Chap. 1, decrees that the Trade of all Nations shall enjoy complete Freedom in all the regions forming the basin of the Congo and its outlets. Book The Acquisition of Africa 1870 1914

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent decades, the responsibility for the past actions of the European colonial powers in relation to their former colonies has been subject to a lively debate. In this book, the question of the responsibility under international law of former colonial States is addressed. Such a legal responsibility would presuppose the violation of the international law that was applicable at the time of colonization. In the ‘Scramble for Africa’ during the Age of New Imperialism (1870-1914), European States and non-State actors mainly used cession and protectorate treaties to acquire territorial sovereignty (imperium) and property rights over land (dominium). The question is raised whether Europeans did or did not on a systematic scale breach these treaties in the context of the acquisition of territory and the expansion of empire, mainly through extending sovereignty rights and, subsequently, intervening in the internal affairs of African political entities.

Book Selling the Congo

Download or read book Selling the Congo written by Matthew G. Stanard and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belgium was a small, neutral country without a colonial tradition when King Leopold II ceded the Congo, his personal property, to the state in 1908. For the next half century Belgium not only ruled an African empire but also, through widespread, enduring, and eagerly embraced propaganda, produced an imperialist-minded citizenry. Selling the Congo is a study of European pro-empire propaganda in Belgium, with particular emphasis on the period 1908–60. Matthew G. Stanard questions the nature of Belgian imperialism in the Congo and considers the Belgian case in light of literature on the French, British, and other European overseas empires. Comparing Belgium to other imperial powers, the book finds that pro-empire propaganda was a basic part of European overseas expansion and administration during the modern period. Arguing against the long-held belief that Belgians were merely “reluctant imperialists,” Stanard demonstrates that in fact many Belgians readily embraced imperialistic propaganda. Selling the Congo contributes to our understanding of the effectiveness of twentieth-century propaganda by revealing its successes and failures in the Belgian case. Many readers familiar with more-popular histories of Belgian imperialism will find in this book a deeper examination of European involvement in central Africa during the colonial era.

Book excerpt: Since well before Henry Morgan Stanley's fabled encounter with David Livingstone on the shore on Lake Tanganyika in the late 19th century and his subsequent collaboration with King Leopold of Belgium in looting the country of its mineral wealth, the Congo's history has been one of collaboration by a minority with, and struggle by the majority against, Western intervention. Before the colonial period, there were military struggles against annexation. During Belgian rule, charismatic religious figures emerged, promising an end to white domination; copper miners struck for higher wages; and rural workers struggled for survival. During the second half of the 20th century, the Congo's efforts at disentanglement from Belgian rule, the murder of the nationalist leader Patrice Lumumba and the long dictatorship of General Mobutu culminated in one of the bloodiest wars the world has ever seen. At the start of a new millennium, this book argues that the West has plundered Africa to its own advantage and that unrestrained global capitalism threatens to remake the entire world, bringing violence and destruction in the name of profit. In this radical history, the authors show not only how the Congo represents and symbolises the continent's long history of subordination, but also how the determined struggle of its people has continued, against the odds, to provide the Congo and the rest of Africa with real hope for the future.

Book excerpt: Published in 1963: The author gives a clear and accurate account of the immense development of France as a colonial power which, in an incredibly short space of time, was to control one third of Africa. He drew his material not only from the scanty formal literature then available, but also by carefully evaluating and selecting from large mass of controversial material to be found in deliberate propaganda, parliamentary debates, and the often suspect offical documentation.
