Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the British Army I have endeavoured in the space at my disposal to Show how the British Army has grown up. I have tried merely to tell a story, and therefore omitted much that might have been said regarding the noble work the Queen's Army h'as done. As regards the opinions advanced, I have always, as far as possible, given the reasons for my views and the authorities which induced me to form them. I have adhered to the principle of using the old regi mental numbers, for the sake of continuity; though, after the date when these were altered, I have, in most cases, added their present territorial titles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the British Army, Vol. 6 Spain was the next power to feel the Emperor's dis pleasure. Godoy s overtures to England became known to him at Berlin; and though, in deference to the abject apology of the Prince of the Peace, no serious notice was taken of them, yet from that moment Napoleon vowed to destroy, In his own good time, the Spanish branch of the house of Bourbon. Meanwhile he summoned the Spanish fleet to Toulon, sent five and-twenty thousand Prussian prisoners to Spain to be subsisted at Spanish expense and, as a measure of prudence, ordered fifteen thousand of the best Spanish troops to march to the Elbe. We shall shortly meet with these troops again, first on the Baltic and later during Sir John Moore's retreat on Coruna, for they formed the corps which is best remembered by the name of its commander, Marquis de la Romana. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the British Army, Vol. 12: 1839-1852 It purports to contain transcripts Of all the documents which came before the governor-general in Council at each meeting, and it is, on the whole, the most disorderly and chaotic assembly of papers that I have encountered in more than thirty years of research. In the first place the volumes are so gigantic, heavy and unwieldy, that it is difficult to read them com fortably in any attitude. In the second, many of the documents before the Council (as is plain from internal evidence) have not been transcribed at all, while others have been copied two or three times over. In the third the transcripts have not been checked, and contain many corrupt passages which cost me much trouble to emend. In the fourth, many of the clerks wrote vile hands, and occasionally one of the idler among them has filled up his exhausted ink-pot with water instead of ink, and has left writing so faint that it can only be read with much suffering to the eyes. In the fifth, there is no index, and, though the volumes are numbered, the pages are not, so that it is impossible to give an accurate reference to them. In the sixth. Download or read book The Campaigns of the British Army written by Author of the Subaltern and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaigns of the British Army: At Washington and New Orleans, in the Years 1814-1815 The following Letters were not the produce of mere recollection, but were formed from the substance of a journal kept, with considerable care, during the progress of the events which they record. Some of these were, indeed, too striking to have been easily forgotten, as to their general character; but for the detail of minute circumstances, which, it is hoped, will be found to possess some degree of interest, memory alone would not have been a secure or sufficient guide. The introductory and final forms of epistolary writing have been purposely omitted; but for all the particulars, however extraordinary, the author is thus enabled fairly to pledge his credit. The letters will, perhaps, obtain the more attention, as conveying the first detailed account of this concluding expedition of the war.
