Shackleton, C. V. O, Vol. 1: Reports on the Scientific Investigations; Biology In summer the collecting was still simpler. The weed could be washed in the lake water without the need for preliminary thawing. In this way we collected continually from the shallow lakes. There were some deeper lakes, which, as it proved, did not melt in summer. In Clear Lake a hole was dug through the ice. We came on water at a depth of about four feet. Here we dredged on the lake bottom, at a depth of seventeen feet. There was a quantity of vegetation brought up, but it was discoloured and dead, and there was no living thing upon it. Late in the winter, Priestley sunk a shaft in the southern portion of Blue Lake, for the purpose chiefly of observing the temperatures of the ice. At a depth of nine feet some scraps of weed were got, and when thawed a number of living animals were found on it. At a depth of fifteen feet we came on the bottom of the lake, which was here composed of angular fragments. These were covered by a continuous film of yellow weed, and on this also there were numerous living things. Book The Heart of the Antarctic

Download or read book The Heart of the Antarctic written by Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton and published by London : W. Heinemann. This book was released on 1909 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-9, led by Ernest H. Shackleton, left Port Lyttelton, New Zealand, in the ship Nimrod on January 1, 1908. On February 3, the Nimrod deposited Shackleton and a party of 14 men at Cape Royds, on Ross Island. The men divided into three groups. One would try to reach the South Pole, a second went north to reach the South Magnetic Pole, while a third was to explore the mountains west of McMurdo Sound. Shackleton, three companions, and four ponies set out for the South Pole on October 29. Enduring great hardship, on January 9, 1909, they attained a latitude of 88°23' S., farther south than any previous expedition. There they were forced to turn back by fierce blizzards and low supplies. They made their way back to the Nimrod and returned safely to New Zealand. In addition to coming to within 97.5 nautical miles (180.6 kilometers) of the pole, the expedition registered two other significant achievements. On March 5-11, 1908 the party of Douglas Mawson, Edgeworth David, and Alistair Mackay made the first ascent of the 3,794-meter Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in Antarctica; and on January 16, 1909, the same three men reached the South Magnetic Pole. The Heart of the Antarctic is Shackleton's two-volume account of the expedition, written on the passage by ocean liner from New Zealand back to Britain and published in October 1909. On December 14, 1911, the Norwegian Roald Amundsen and four companions finally reached the pole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Antarctic Expedition, 1907-9, Vol. 1: Under the Command of E. H. Shackleton, C. V. O., Reports on the Scientific Investigations; Geology, Glaciology, Physiography, Stratigraphy, and Tectonic Geology, of South Victoria Land A distinguished Norwegian geologist has remarked: While we know fairly well the effect of running water from glaciated lands with a wet climate, we practically do not know anything of the way in which a continuous ice covering pure and simple may sculpture a land. Herein lies one of the many charms of that great white continent so vast that even where narrowest it would stretch from Calais to the Caspian - viz. that its ice covering, except for the Antarctic Horst in the Ross Sea region, is nearly continuous. One might, therefore, imagine that in Antarctica Reusch's ideal is at present realised; and so it is, but to a comparatively limited extent. Man has arrived in Antarctica too late, just as civilised man has been in Europe too late, has gone to North America too late, and still goes to Greenland and Spitsbergen too late, to observe anything like the full effect of a continuous ice covering in sculpturing land. Probably everywhere to-day the ice-fields of the world are on the wane, in spite of what appear to be exceptions in the case of local advancing glaciers. De Geer has suggested that ice does not necessarily flow evenly and steadily, as water does, but is subject probably to intermittent outrushes followed by short epochs of retreat. These outrushes may be due to prolonged accumulation of inland ice setting up a critical pressure ultimately sufficient to overcome frictional resistance and resistance to shearing. The ice then moves away rapidly towards lower levels, and in polar regions thrusts itself into the sea, and across the sea-floor, until its seaward edge floats and breaks away as bergs. Such an epoch of activity may be followed by a resting stage, when ablation of ice, partly through the breaking away of bergs, partly through thaw and evaporation, exceeds what is added through ice flow and snow precipitation. Thus in one and the same district one glacier may be rapidly advancing while an adjacent glacier is retreating, as is the case in Spitzbergen with the Sefstrom Glacier and the Von Post Glacier respectively.! With the exception of such glaciers as are in a stage of temporary advance all the ice masses in the world are probably dwindling. Certainly the Antarctic ice sheet is decreasing rapidly, and this ice shrinkage has been general, as fur as we know, over the whole area of the Antarctic Continent, from circle to pole.
