Book The Civil Engineering of Canals and Railways before 1850

Download or read book The Civil Engineering of Canals and Railways before 1850 written by Michael M. Chrimes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1750 and 1850 the British landscape was transformed by a transport revolution which involved engineering works on a scale not seen in Europe since Roman times. While the economic background of the canal and railway ages are relatively well known and many histories have been written about the locomotives which ran on the railways, relatively little has been published on how the engineering works themselves were made possible. This book brings together a series of papers which seek to answer the questions of how canals and railways were built, how the engineers responsible organised the works, how they were designed and what the role of the contractors was in the process.

Book Bristol A Worshipful Town and Famous City

Download or read book Bristol A Worshipful Town and Famous City written by Nigel Baker and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bristol is a major city and port in the south-west of England. In medieval times, it became the third largest city in the kingdom, behind London and York. Bristol was founded in the late Saxon period and grew rapidly in the 12th and 13th centuries. Initially, seaborne trading links with Ireland and France were particularly significant; later, from the 16th century onwards, the city became a focus for trade with Iberia, Africa, and the New World. This led to the growth of new industries such as brass manufacture, glass production and sugar refining, producing items for export, and processing imported raw materials. Bristol also derived wealth from the slave trade between Africa and the New World. The city has a long history of antiquarian and archaeological investigation. This volume provides, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of the historical development of Bristol, based on archaeological and architectural evidence. Part 1 describes the geological and topographical context of Bristol and discusses evidence for the environment prior to the foundation of the city. The history of archaeological work in Bristol is discussed in detail, as is the pictorial record and the cartographic evidence for the city. In Part 2, a series of period-based chapters considers the historical background and archaeological evidence for Bristol’s development from the prehistoric, Roman, and post-Roman eras through the establishment and growth of Bristol between about 950 and 1200 AD; the medieval city; early modern period; and the period from 1700 to 1900 AD, when Bristol was particularly important for its role in transatlantic trade. Each chapter discusses the major civic, military, and religious monuments of the time and the complex topographical evolution of the city. Part 3 assesses the significance of Bristol’s archaeology and presents a range of themes for future research.

Book Studies in the Business History of Bristol

Download or read book Studies in the Business History of Bristol written by Charles Harvey and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Klappentext: Recent years have seen the coming of age of regional studies, historical and social scientific. The general result has been a deepening in our understanding of the processes of economic and social change. Studies in the Business History of Bristol is the outcome of increased scholarly concern with local variations in experience as well as general phenomena; in this case with a business community and industries which hitherto have been neglected. For whilst maritime and Georgian Bristol have received a good deal of attention from historians, much less is known about the very substantial expansion of the city in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. With one or two notable exceptions, there has been little research on the businessmen and enterprises whose activities have sustained the regional economy in more recent times. Charles Harvey and Jon Press survey the industrial and economic development of Bristol since 1800 in a wide?ranging introductory chapter which sets the scene for the more detailed studies which follow. Several of these concentrate on the affairs of leading Bristol enterprises, such as Frys, Georges, and Brittons, and examine the factors and personalities which made for their success. Other chapters cover entire industries over long periods, laying the foundations for a much needed economic history of the Bristol region. All the chapters are based upon extensive original research, and cover subjects which, despite their obvious importance, have been largely ignored until now. The text is enlivened through the inclusion of more than forty illustrations, many of which are published for the first time.

Book Payment and philanthropy in British healthcare 1918 48

Download or read book Payment and philanthropy in British healthcare 1918 48 written by George Campbell Gosling and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-17 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book is available as an open access ebook under a CC-BY-NC-ND licence. At a time when payment is claiming a greater place than ever before within the NHS, this book provides the first in-depth investigation of the workings, scale and meaning of payment in British hospitals before the NHS. There were only three decades in British history when it was the norm for patients to pay the hospital; those between the end of the First World War and the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948. Payment played an important part in redefining rather than abandoning medical philanthropy, based on class divisions and the notion of financial contribution as a civic duty. With new insights on the scope of private medicine and the workings of the means test in the hospital, as well as the civic, consumer and charitable meanings associated with paying the hospital, Gosling offers a fresh perspective on healthcare before the NHS and welfare before the welfare state.
