Book The Bridge Death on the Homefront

Download or read book The Bridge Death on the Homefront written by Wayne W. Arntson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-08-23 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s 1943, and Duluth, Minnesota is one of the busiest ports in the world. Most of the iron ore for World War II moves in giant ore boats through a narrow channel separating Lake Superior from the Twin Ports of Duluth and Superior. Spanning that channel is: The Bridge. In those hurried times, as civilians attempt to deal with shortages, loneliness, and daily wartime tragedies, a murder occurs to further warp the daily life. You may want to read this book with your grandchild and explain who Bing Crosby was and what food rationing meant. And, incidentally, enjoy a good mystery.

Walker reinvents himself as the Voice of Freedom, broadcasting information and enemy positions to civilian Resistance cells via guerrilla radio. But Walker’s broadcasts have also reached the ears of the enemy. Korea dispatches its deadliest warrior to hunt the Voice of Freedom and crush the ever-growing Resistance before it can mount a new war for American liberty.

Book excerpt: War has often been seen as the domain of men and thus irrelevant to gender analysis, and American writers have frequently examined war according to traditional gender expectations: that boys become men by going to war and girls become women by building a home. Yet the writers discussed in this book complicate these expectations, since their female characters often take part directly in war and especially since their male characters repeatedly imagine domestic spaces for themselves in the midst of war. Chapters on Hemingway and the First World War, Kurt Vonnegut and the Second World War, and Tim O'Brien and the Vietnam War place these writers in their particular historical and cultural contexts while tracing similarities in their depiction of gender relationships, imagined domestic spaces, and the representability of trauma. The book concludes by examining post-9/11 American literature, probing what happens when the front lines actually come home to Americans. While much has been written about Hemingway, Vonnegut, O'Brien, and even 9/11 literature separately, this study is the first to bring them together in order to examine views about war, gender, and domesticity over a hundred-year period. It argues that 9/11 literature follows a long tradition of American writing about war in which the domestic and public realms are inextricably intertwined and in which imagined domestic spaces can provide a window into representing wartime trauma, an experience often thought to be unrepresentable or incomprehensible to those who were not actually there. SUSAN FARRELL is Professor of English at the College of Charleston.

Download or read book For Home and Country written by Celia M. Kingsbury and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Home and Country examines the propaganda that targeted noncombatants on the home front in the United States and Europe during World War I. Cookbooks, popular magazines, romance novels, and government food agencies targeted women in their homes, especially their kitchens, pressuring them to change their domestic habits. Children were also taught to fear the enemy and support the war through propaganda in the form of toys, games, and books. And when women and children were not the recipients of propaganda, they were often used in propaganda to target men. By examining a diverse collection of literary texts, songs, posters, and toys, Celia Malone Kingsbury reveals how these pervasive materials were used to fight the war's cultural battle.

Book Guerrillas Unionists and Violence on the Confederate Home Front

Download or read book Guerrillas Unionists and Violence on the Confederate Home Front written by Daniel E. Sutherland and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 1999-08-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, this localized violence was largely ignored, scholars focusing instead on large-scale operations of the war—the decisions and actions of generals and presidents. But as Daniel Sutherland reminds us, the impact of battles and elections cannot be properly understood without an examination of the struggle for survival on the home front, of lives lived in the atmosphere created by war. Sutherland gathers eleven essays by such noted Civil War scholars as Michael Fellman, Donald Frazier, Noel Fisher, and B. F. Cooling, each one exploring the Confederacy's internal war in a different state. All help to broaden our view of the complexity of war and to provide us with a clear picture of war's consequences, its impact on communities, homes, and families. This strong collection of essays delves deeply into what Daniel Sutherland calls "the desperate side of war," enriching our understanding of a turbulent and divisive period in American history.
