Book The Bridegroom Messiah and the People of God

Download or read book The Bridegroom Messiah and the People of God written by Jocelyn McWhirter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-16 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many interpreters of the Fourth Gospel detect allusions to biblical texts about marriage, but none offers a comprehensive analysis of these proposed allusions or a convincing explanation for their presence. Building on the work of Richard Hays, Donald Juel and Craig Koester, in this 2006 book Jocelyn McWhirter argues that John alludes to biblical texts about marriage in order to develop a metaphor for Jesus and how he relates to his followers. According to McWhirter, John chooses these texts because he uses a first-century exegetical convention to interpret them as messianic prophecies in light of an accepted messianic text. Specifically, he uses verbal parallels to link them to Psalm 45, a wedding song for God's anointed king. He then draws on them to portray Jesus as a bridegroom-Messiah and to depict Jesus' relationship with his followers in terms of marriage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cross is love’s greatest story. Colin Hamer introduces the Bridegroom Messiah, and highlights the four reasons why he had to die, from the perspective of the Bible’s marital imagery. The Bridegroom Messiah died: (1) To transform the elect into a virgin bride by cleansing her with his blood, to circumvent the Deuteronomy 24 marriage law; (2) So he as high priest could take a virgin bride; (3) To pay the mohar; (4) To cleanse us from sin so that we could come back into God’s presence after the expulsion from Eden. David Instone-Brewer, of Tyndale House, Cambridge, calls Hamer’s treatment of marital imagery: “A significant contribution without precedent in the literature.”

Book Jesus the Bridegroom

Download or read book Jesus the Bridegroom written by Brant James Pitre and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jesus the Bridegroom, Brant Pitre once again taps into the wells of Jewish Scripture and tradition, and unlocks the secrets of what is arguably the most well-known symbol of the Christian faith: the cross of Christ. In this thrilling exploration, Pitre shows how the suffering and death of Jesus was far more than a tragic Roman execution. Instead, the Passion of Christ was the fulfillment of ancient Jewish prophecies of a wedding, when the God of the universe would wed himself to humankind in an everlasting nuptial covenant. To be sure, most Christians are familiar with the apostle Paul's teaching that Christ is the 'Bridegroom' and the Church is the 'Bride'. But what does this really mean? And what would ever possess Paul to compare the death of Christ to the love of a husband for his wife? If you would have been at the Crucifixion, with Jesus hanging there dying, is that how you would have described it? How could a first-century Jew like Paul, who knew how brutal Roman crucifixions were, have ever compared the execution of Jesus to a wedding? And why does he refer to this as the "great mystery" (Ephesians 5:32)? As Pitre shows, the key to unlocking this mystery can be found by going back to Jewish Scripture and tradition and seeing the entire history of salvation, from Mount Sinai to Mount Calvary, as a divine love story between Creator and creature, between God and Israel, between Christ and his bride--a story that comes to its climax on the wood of a Roman cross. In the pages of Jesus the Bridegroom, dozens of familiar passages in the Bible--the Exodus, the Song of Songs, the Wedding at Cana, the Woman at the Well, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and even the Second Coming at the End of Time--are suddenly transformed before our eyes. Indeed, when seen in the light of Jewish Scripture and tradition, the life of Christ is nothing less than the greatest love story ever told.

Book The Bride Of Christ The Bridegroom and His Bride

Download or read book The Bride Of Christ The Bridegroom and His Bride written by Christopher Hussey and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-08-11 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Right from the very beginning in eternity past, God had planned history with His Son having a bride, a companion that would co-reign with Him and enjoy Him forever. That is the eternal purpose of God in creating a bride for His Son. If you read the Scripture from cover to cover, you would discover that God teaches us in a variety of different ways. Sometimes God uses powerful word pictures, sometimes He uses symbols, sometimes He uses examples of people both good and bad. Sometimes God uses a direct word, an authoritative word, sometimes He uses examples from nature, like a tree planted by the rivers of water that will not cease to bear fruit. This book highlights how God gave us an example of an ancient Jewish wedding ceremony that correlates with Christ, the Bridegroom, and His bride the church. From the father choosing a bride for his son, paying the bridal price, the bridegroom snatching his bride and bringing her to the bridal chamber, and then finally co-reigning with him in their household with him as the head. It is absolutely amazing the correlation between the two. What was a mystery to the Jews has been revealed. The mystery was that both Jew and Gentile called the church would be the bride of Christ. The bride of Christ is describing the kind of relationship we can have with Jesus. God is seeking willing lovers, who would voluntarily seek His heart, voluntarily surrender to Him, and voluntarily love Him with all their heart, soul and mind, and strength.

Download or read book Jesus the Bridegroom written by Phillip J. Long and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-11-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Jesus claim to be the "bridegroom"? If so, what did he mean by this claim? When Jesus says that the wedding guests should not fast "while the bridegroom is with them" (Mark 2:19), he is claiming to be a bridegroom by intentionally alluding to a rich tradition from the Hebrew Bible. By eating and drinking with "tax collectors and other sinners," Jesus was inviting people to join him in celebrating the eschatological banquet. While there is no single text in the Hebrew Bible or the literature of the Second Temple Period which states the "messiah is like a bridegroom," the elements for such a claim are present in several texts in Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Hosea. By claiming that his ministry was an ongoing wedding celebration he signaled the end of the Exile and the restoration of Israel to her position as the Lord's beloved wife. This book argues that Jesus combined the tradition of an eschatological banquet with a marriage metaphor in order to describe the end of the Exile as a wedding banquet.

Book The Bride God s People Restored Catholic for a Reason IV

Download or read book The Bride God s People Restored Catholic for a Reason IV written by Stephen Pimentel and published by Emmaus Road Publishing. This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this essay, Stephen and Rachel Pimentel give a historical exegesis on the bride throughout the whole Bible. Beginning with the Old Testament, they take the reader on a swift and easily-understood journey through the passages regarding the bride and her relationship to the bridegroom. They explain some of the more difficult to understand passages regarding marriage in both Old and New Testaments; and show the beauty of God’s plan for marriage, and its centrality to the mystery of His love for us. Grasping these things makes clear the importance of marriage, and shows how in our own marriages, through the sacramental grace we receive, each of us furthers and strengthens God’s marriage to the Church, His bride.

Book excerpt: The Ancient Jewish Wedding: A Missing Link in Christianity. Yeshua - told His disciples - that He did not know the day or hour of His return (Mat. 24:32-36) - this is not so much to say He does not have all knowledge - but as with any Jewish bridegroom - He must wait for His Father to give the word that the set time has come.Even though this topic is familiar to many, few Christians have considered the elements of the ancient Jewish wedding and the several biblical feasts from a prophetic viewpoint. The language used by Jesus (Yeshua, the bridegroom) and Hebrew writers of the New Testament in regards to the bride (the Church) will be better understood using a historical understanding of the Jewish roots of the Christian faith.

Book The Spirit and the Bride Say Come

Download or read book The Spirit and the Bride Say Come written by Susan Gutknecht and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:9). What is the end of the age? What is the wedding supper? Are you prepared? Like us, the apostles asked those very questions. In the Bible, the wedding supper refers to what will happen at the end of the age. Jesus answered by telling the apostles the parable of the ten virgins, a reference to those on earth who know about the end of days. He advised the apostles that only half of those who know the end is coming will be prepared; only half of those who know about the end of days will have enough oil to keep their lamps burning through the long night of waiting. The other half will be at the market looking for oil and will miss the coming of Jesus. That would mean half of the people who know that Jesus is coming back are not prepared for his return. We need to gather oil for our lamps throughout our lives through prayer, through reading the Bible. The Holy Spirit was sent to prepare us for the wedding supper. Does God still perform miracles or speak to His people? At the age of four, I clearly heard the voice of the Holy Spirit say to me, You can have joy in your life if you walk with me. This is a personal testimony of how the Lord heals the ones He loves, walks with us, and surrounds us with His peace.

Book Engaging the Doctrine of Marriage

Download or read book Engaging the Doctrine of Marriage written by Matthew Levering and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-08-12 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the next volume in Levering's Engaging Doctrine series. The prior volume of the series examined the doctrine of creation. The present volume examines the purpose of creation: the marriage of God and humans. God created the cosmos for the purpose of the marriage of God and his people--and through his people, the marriage of God and the entire creation. Given that the central meaning or "prime analogate" of marriage is the marriage of God and humankind, the study of human marriage needs to be shaped by this eschatological goal and foregrounded as a dogmatic theme. After a first chapter defending and explaining the biblical witness to the marriage of God and his people, the book explores various themes: marriage as an image of God, original sin as the fall of the primordial marriage, the cross of Jesus Christ and marital self-sacrificial love, the procreative and unitive ends of marriage, marriage as a sacrament, and marriage's importance for social justice and for the upbuilding of the kingdom of God. Along the way, the book provides an introduction to the key biblical, patristic, medieval, modern, and contemporary thinkers and controversies regarding the doctrine of marriage.
