Book Indebted Development

Download or read book Indebted Development written by Howard P Lehman and published by Springer. This book was released on 1993-07-13 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dreyfus Affair, or simply L'Affaire, was the defining event in French life between the disasters of the Franco-Prussian War and the First World War. After decades of prosperity and growth following the Prussian invasion, the destruction of the Paris Commune and the seemingly successful creation of the Third Republic, the Affair cruelly exposed the bitter divisions within French society. The French army was torn apart, ministers were forced to resign, new political groupings were created, and ultimately, the Affair led to an attempted coup and contributed to the paranoia that almost resulted in a catastrophic Anglo-French war in 1898. This short work fills the need for a comprehensible, concise book which focuses on the scale and complexity of the Dreyfus Affair.

Book The IMF and the Future

Download or read book The IMF and the Future written by Graham Bird and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Monetary Fund has been criticised from both the right and the left of the political spectrum with the right arguing that it is too interventionist and creates more problems than it solves and the left on occasion demanding that it be abolished altogether. What seems almost beyond question is that the IMF needs to be reformed. Defining a future role for the IMF will always be a controversial issue, but vital to any considerations will be a measured assessment of how it has operated in the past. This excellent new book from an internationally respected expert on the IMF intends to do just that. Starting with an historical background tracing the evolution of the IMF, the book goes on to cover such themes as: *The circumstances under which countries turn to the IMF *The various aspects of IMF conditionality *Institutional issues such as lending facilities and how the fund is resourced. Bringing together an array of articles, this excellent new book will undoubtedly be required reading for anyone with a serious interest in development studies as well as being an eye-opening read for policy makers involved with the IMF.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International debt rescheduling, both in earlier epochs and our present one, has been marked by a flurry of bargaining. In this process, significant variation has emerged over time and across cases in the extent to which debtors have undertaken economic adjustment, banks or bondholders have written down debts, and creditor governments and international organizations have intervened in negotiations. Debt Games develops and applies a situational theory of bargaining to analyze the adjustment undertaken by debtors and the concessions provided by lenders in international debt rescheduling. This approach has two components: a focus on each actor's individual situation, defined by its political and economic bargaining resources, and a complementary focus on changes in their position. The model proves successful in accounting for bargaining outcomes in eighty-four percent of the sixty-one cases, which include all instances of Peruvian and Mexican debt rescheduling over the last one hundred and seventy years as well as Argentine and Brazilian rescheduling between 1982 and 1994.
