Book The Boys Book of Sports

Download or read book The Boys Book of Sports written by Grantland Rice and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boys Book of Sports In selecting this material for "The Boys' Book of Sports" we had in mind but one thought. This thought was to try and confer upon the average normal boy - which most of them are - a double blessing. 1. A long period of entertainment and delight. 2. A full span of instruction and an inside view upon all the games that each boy plays, or would like to play, if he had the chance. There is no normal boy in all the world who does n't thrill at the call of outdoor life; who does n't like to play football or baseball, golf or tennis; who doesn't like to camp out, fly kites, have a camera, go fishing and swimming, shoot a rifle, jump, run, or sail a boat, or dream of riding in an aeroplane that will take him far above the trees he climbs and the birds that have eluded his reach. What boy in the land is there who would n't like to have Billy Evans, the great American League umpire, come to him and tell all about the heroes of baseball - how Cobb bats and Johnson pitches, how Alexander wins, and how Speaker makes his three-base hits? What boy is there who would n't like to have Christy Mathewson come and tell him how to throw the "fade-away" - how to hold the ball for various curves, how the great game should be played? They both come to you in this book and tell you all of these things and many more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Won in the Ninth: The First of a Series of Stories for Boys on Sports to Be Known as the Matty Books Well, said Hughie, this is fine all right, boys. We did win, didn't we! And it's very kind of you to try to give me all the credit, but if it hadn't been for the other ten fellows on the team, I guess I couldn't have done very much, and anyway it took eleven pretty good men to beat that team from Jefferson. Then, turning to Johnny Everson he said, Gee, I wish the snow would melt. I'd like to find out what kind of new fellows we have who can play baseball. And that was just like Hughie. Here it was winter, with snow on the ground, and a month or two, of cold weather still in sight. He had hardly got rested from the football campaign, and now he was wishing it was time to get out the bats, balls, and masks! It gets me, said Delvin to Gibbie over in one corner, how that old boy hustles and is thinking about all kinds of things all the time, but I guess that's the way to win out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boys Own Book of Sports, Birds, and Animals Our little volume describes the most popular amusements, and will undoubtedly suggest to most of its juvenile readers some sports with which they were previously unacquainted. We have confined ourselves to those sports which prevail in our own country - those which all may participate in, with out inconvenien'ce; believing it to be quite superfluous to give any account of those which are wholly foreign and nu practised by American boys. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boys' Own Book: A Complete Encyclopedia of Athletic, Scientific, Outdoor and Indoor Sports, With Illustrations As for a single person to write a book of this description with a fair prospect of success, treating of all the different games that come under this heading, I would state that I am largely indebted to the following Works for many parts that I am not intimately acquainted with viz The American Boy's Book, Every Boy's Book; and The Modern Playmate. Many of the games have been so revised as hardly to be remembered as the same game the editor played when a boy. For example, the sim ple and almost abandoned game of Rounders, or Town Ball, has risen to a science under the name of Base Ball, while such as Croquet, Football, Cricket, and La Crosse, are given as they now exist after many years of. Book The Boys Book of Scouts Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Boys Book of Scouts Classic Reprint written by Percy Keese Fitzhugh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boys' Book of Scouts As every boy knows, this great country of ours was in the beginning a very little country, occupy ing a narrow strip of land along the Atlantic Coast. The vast ocean washed against it, and across this ocean brave men, heroic, intrepid, and adventurous, had come, braving its perils, and had founded their little colonies along its wild rugged shore. These men were explorers - water scouts, they might be called - and their lives and deeds were marvels of prowess and adventure. But beyond this narrow strip of land lay an other wilderness, mysterious and unexplored, and as dark and perilous and trackless as the wild ocean to the eastward. The thirteen colonies, and later the little republic, lay between these two vast silent wastes; and men soon found that of the two the watery one was the easier to explore. At least, it was not so difficult to estimate its perils. There were storms and there were pirates; but at least there were no unknown sav ages, no wild beasts, no frowning mountains, or barren, wind-swept plains - no scorching sands. Book The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys

Download or read book The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys written by Henry Chadwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys: A Guide and d104-Book of Games of the Play-Ground, the Parlor, and the Field, Adapted Especially for American Youth OW that the spirit of the age favors the plan of a judicious combination of physical recreation with mental culture, it is timely to prepare a text-book of sports and pastimes for boys, which will best tend to promote this system of paying due attention to physical as well as mental education. An old writer says, Let me make the songs of a people, and I care not who makes their laws. This rule is as applicable to the structure of the sports of a people as it is to the com position of their songs. The pastimes of boys of all nations partake largely of the peculiar character of the people whose youth engage in them. The boys of a war like nation find their chief recreation in sports in which feats of brutal courage, and of endurance of fatigue and pain, are marked characteristics. On the other hand, the youths of a peaceful people enjoy those pastimes best which most com pare in their character with the national life of their progenitors. Differences in climate necessarily have their relation to the character of national sports but it is more in the essential character of the people themselves that their national pastimes differ, and this is especially noticeable in the receative sports of boys. It is in this respect that the games of American boyhood are different, as a rule, from those of English youths. Of course, there is a certain degree of similarity in most of them, arising from their English origin but there is scarcely an imported game that is at all open to improvement, which has not of late years been essentially Americanized witness the evolution of our manly national game of base-ball from the old English schoolboy game of Rounders.
