Book The Story of a Boy

Download or read book The Story of a Boy written by John Dwight Marchalleck and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of a Boy! By: John Dwight Marchalleck John Dwight Marchalleck was born in the parish of St. Andrew, Jamaica. At the age of three, his mother migrated to the U.S.A. and his new guardian parents, her mom and dad, became the main lifelong influence for John as reflected in The Story of a Boy! John was a happy child, growing up with his grandmother and grandfather. In this book, he reflects on hardships like drought affecting his hometown mountain village from time to time. His farmer grandfather and philanthropic grandmother were his primary tutors and idols. His grandfather was a storyteller who provided candy for the village children who stopped by to visit and listen. Like many grandchildren, John was sent away to boarding school and later to attend high school in Kingston but continued to communicate with them through written letters, a habit encouraged by his grandma. While in high school, his fondness for writing was also reflected by mystery stories John wrote and were aired on JBC (Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation). That earned the boy extra pocket money. But this fostered bad habits, as John began to frequent the billiard halls in Kingston, which prevented him from going home directly after school. This was reported to the headmaster, who meted out fifty-page homework essays for John in lieu of other detention to curb the boy’s after-school bad habits. This enhanced John’s appetite more for writing; however, rather than stop him playing billiards or frequenting the pool halls, the boy could effortlessly produce written assignments, on most given topics, free of grammatical errors. In 1963 John migrated and joined his biological mom in the U.S.A. Later, as a student at the Benjamin Franklin School of Accounting and Finance in Washington, D.C., John worked and published articles in both the National Geographic Society’s School and News Services. A long drought in writing from John came, however, but now The Story of a Boy! can be happily shared with the world.

Download or read book Stowaway on Santa s Sleigh written by Charles Jeffrey Noel, Sr and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-06-06 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stowaway on Santa's Sleigh All year long the North Pole is busy. Everyone is busy except Stanley Claus, who has way too much time on his hands. Stanley, an eleven year old primordial dwarf was being bullied in his home town, so his uncle Santa Claus welcomed him to the North Pole to help with this very sensitive issue. Stanley, also a child prodigy, is soon met with an even worse kind of bullying. When he is finally given a very adult job to do, things get worse. He starts to feel that he doesn't fit in anywhere. He is a little boy with a BIG mind and an even bigger heart. Stanley is also a cookie moocher and his adversary is Sonsaray, the chief cookie baker. Fiona is a nine year old beauty who loves Stanley and always bugs him for a kiss. Stanley confides in Herald, his best friend. Due to the huge increase in the number of children in the world, Santa is forced to turn to technology to face and manage the increased demand. Everything needs to be computerized. One major project was the toy bag on the sleigh. While the outside appearance of the bag on the sleigh remained the same, thanks to the magic of Christmas, the inside of the bag was expanded to the size of about twenty football fields. It too had to be automated and computerized. Stanley feels that there aren't any truly naughty children. "They are just confused or misunderstood, or they don't know how to be nice." He became a "stowaway with a purpose" inside the enormous toy bag. He felt that no child should be given coal. Every child should be given a second chance and receive a toy. Stanley was given the honor of supervising the loading of the sleigh which included millions of toys but not a single bin of coal. Using his advanced intellect he made multiple changes to all of the computer systems to fit his agenda. And he had to do all in secret. His mission never wavered but his mind-set did. Despite all of his work and effort, he was still getting rude remarks, criticisms and disrespect from many of the adults. All of this took an emotional toll...after all, he was still just a child. He felt out of place and like he was being bullied all over again. He decided that he wanted to go back home to Minnesota. Being a stowaway on Santa's sleigh would afford him a free ride home and he wouldn't have to explain anything to his Uncle Santa or anyone else. (Except his parents.) The dilemma came when they reached his own house in Minnesota on Christmas Eve, because they had only finished half of the route. What would happen to the "naughty list" children on the second half of the route? They wouldn't get a second chance! For them, nothing would change. He made a personal and grown up decision; he had to continue and finish the route! He couldn't let them down! While they were at Stanley's house, Santa discovered him and they had a heart-to-heart talk. Stanley became emotionally overwhelmed as he proceeded to tell Uncle Santa everything. Santa appealed to him and asked him if he thought that at least the relentless bully from his school should get a lump of coal instead of a nice toy. Stanley displayed a mature and forgiving spirit and said that of all people, he needs and should be given a second chance. The book ends back at the North Pole with a sleepy Stanley Claus going to bed filled with wonderful memories of perhaps the best day of his young life. When he woke up he found that he was two feet taller, he had along white beard and he was wearing red pajamas with "SANTA" monogrammed on the chest. He had become the person he had always wanted to be. My book tells of the whimsical antics, the intellectual genius, and the sensitive nature of Stanley Claus. I've played Santa Claus for thirty years and I felt compelled to introduce a fresh, new and delightful character into the magical story of Christmas. Enjoy my book.

Download or read book Chilean Poet written by Alejandro Zambra and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of 2022 by The New Yorker “A tender and funny story about love, family and the peculiar position of being a stepparent…[Chilean Poet] broadens the author’s scope and quite likely his international reputation.” —Los Angeles Times “Zambra's books have long shown him to be a writer who, at the sentence level, is in a world all his own.” —Juan Vidal, NPR.org A writer of “startling talent” (The New York Times Book Review), Alejandro Zambra returns with his most substantial work yet: a story of fathers and sons, ambition and failure, and what it means to make a family After a chance encounter at a Santiago nightclub, aspiring poet Gonzalo reunites with his first love, Carla. Though their desire for each other is still intact, much has changed: among other things, Carla now has a six-year-old son, Vicente. Soon the three form a happy sort-of family—a stepfamily, though no such word exists in their language. Eventually, their ambitions pull the lovers in different directions—in Gonzalo’s case, all the way to New York. Though Gonzalo takes his books when he goes, still, Vicente inherits his ex-stepfather’s love of poetry. When, at eighteen, Vicente meets Pru, an American journalist literally and figuratively lost in Santiago, he encourages her to write about Chilean poets—not the famous, dead kind, your Nerudas or Mistrals or Bolaños, but rather the living, striving, everyday ones. Pru’s research leads her into this eccentric community—another kind of family, dysfunctional but ultimately loving. Will it also lead Vicente and Gonzalo back to each other? In Chilean Poet, Alejandro Zambra chronicles with enormous tenderness and insight the small moments—sexy, absurd, painful, sweet, profound—that make up our personal histories. Exploring how we choose our families and how we betray them, and what it means to be a man in relationships—a partner, father, stepfather, teacher, lover, writer, and friend—it is a bold and brilliant new work by one of the most important writers of our time.

Book Tanner Boy Orphan

Download or read book Tanner Boy Orphan written by Fred Tanner and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about a family finding themselves in a desperate situation after the loss of their mother. With help from caring individuals, a home was found for the children at the Methodist Children's Home in Winston - Salem, NC. "Pop" Woosley and his dedicated and understanding care givers provided the education and leadership that directed the children toward an opportunity for a better life. The life of the boy, Fred Tanner, and what his physical and emotional experiences were well documented as he describes the daily life at this home where he lived for 16 years. In some instances, living in an orphanage is much better than living in some family situations. The structured living environment was so designed that one home mother could manage the behavior of 30 boys. The boys had the opportunity to get into boyhood mischief, and that they did! Boys had their own understanding of "orphan humor." Some boys lived the life that would rival Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer while some boys were mellow and studious. Through sports, work responsibility, scouting and some social events the boys were mellowed somewhat into responsible young boys. Hard work and discipline were a matter of fact and became the life habits of most of that were raised at this home. Opportunity for further education was made available through work programs and college assistance to those that wished to attend. Most all boys served a tour in the military. Children and their parents, many in not much better situations than we were, gave their pennies and nickles so that we could have a pair of shoes or a decent set of clothes. This was most humiliating. Other people of means were kind enough to see the need of over four hundred children.
