Book Goodnight John Boy

Download or read book Goodnight John Boy written by Earl Hamner and published by Cumberland House Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For eight wonderful years The Waltons, the story of a family living in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains during the Depression, entertained America and the world. Yet this television show was more than entertaining. Each episode combined wonderful stories and "teachable moments" in which adults and children alike learned the importance of honesty, hard work, respect, responsibility, self-sacrifice, and kindness. As is true in most families, the Waltons faced many challenges, occasionally stumbled along the way, but they struggled to live their lives within the framework of the values they believed and taught. Goodnight, John-Boy is a memory book of The Waltons, the number-one television show of its time. Filled with behind-the-scenes anecdotes and profiles of people who appeared on the show, it introduces readers to the Hamner family members who later became characters on The Waltons, suggests events and locales that inspired many of the episodes, and traces Earl Hamner's life as a writer from Virginia to New York to Hollywood. Included is a description of each episode plus reminiscence, comments, and personal feelings from numerous people connected with the series-writers, actors, directors, producers, family, and fans. Heavily illustrated with publicity shots and personal photographs taken by cast, crew, and others, Goodnight John-Boy will be a welcomed book by millions of loyal fans. When The Waltons first aired in 1972, it was at the bottom of the Nielson ratings-by December it led the list. That dramatic leap came about because fans told their friends about it and wrote the CBS network to praise the show and to plead that the show not be canceled. Thirty years later, Goodnight, John-Boy is sure to touch the hearts of the show's fans again.

Book excerpt: Who among us hasn't treasured memories of yesteryear told to us by our 'elders'? Aleta Miller has gathered vignettes and woven them into a tapestry of life in a Sierra Gold Rush mining town exotically named Port Wine (near Whiskey Diggins and Poker Flat). She has captured the essence of California's pioneer spirit, mining nuggets of real life stories that lay buried under yesteryear's journalism: Two story deep snowdrifts compete with a mountain visitor in a Locomobile. Civil War politics blend in with birth pains of the new California statehood. Downhill ski races lift spirits of beleaguered residents of Port Wine and La Porte, also known as Rabbit Creek. Uncontrollable fires gut reconstructed towns with diabolical regularity. In addition, we meet colorful characters who have touched the hills including Black Bart, Dutch Kate, Bret Harte, the Blue Lake Monster and Sasquatch. There is something for everyone in this delightful read. Aleta Farren Miller, as a young girl, became enamored of California gold country history during occasional visits to the Davis Motor Mine. The mine tunneled into a mountainside within a mile of Port Wine, CA. It was operated by Aleta's cousins Fred and Durward Davis and produced a modest quantity of gold. Aleta was enchanted by the remoteness of the location as well as by the surroundings which have changed very little over the last 100 years. Passing encounters with "old timers" and whimsical poetry adorning grave sites in the Pioneer Cemetery stimulated a growing interest. Many of her relatives and even a pet parrot are buried there. With the help of her mother, Rilla Farren Cross, other family members, the archives of Bancroft Library at U.C. Berkeley, and The Mountain Messenger Newspaper at Downieville, CA, the interest culminated in Aleta investing almost a decade undertaking this collection of what now may be classified as journalistic memorabilia. We are indebted to her instinctive ability to sort out and preserve this remarkable collection of memories. Her own background and personal experiences make her uniquely capable of understanding and synthesizing the insight that she gained from that time in California history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2015 William C. Morris YA Debut Award Finalist Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga. Foolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Ava — in all other ways a normal girl — is born with the wings of a bird. In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naive to the twisted motives of others. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the summer solstice celebration. That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Ava’s quest and her family’s saga build to a devastating crescendo. First-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human.

Book Boys will be Boys and Other Myths

Download or read book Boys will be Boys and Other Myths written by Will Moore and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, we have exalted and theologised about men like Adam or David to the point where we have become oblivious to the fact that they are far from perfect role models for Christian manhood. Failing to read scripture properly, we have used it to shape a distorted understanding of masculinity. Stretching from issues of violence, emotional and sexual abuse, the desire for power, homophobia, and the suppression of emotions, Will Moore draws from scholarship, personal stories, and popular culture to offer an honest and accessible insight into the toxic myths which frame how w e read scripture. Only when we expose these myths, he argues, can we start to see the authentic men staring straight back at us from the pages of our bibles, and be able to reshape the way in which we produce Christian men today, tackling the violence that is being done by men to themselves and others.
