Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller "The Wild Truth is an important book on two fronts: It sets the record straight about a story that has touched thousands of readers, and it opens up a conversation about hideous domestic violence hidden behind a mask of prosperity and propriety."–NPR.org The spellbinding story of Chris McCandless, who gave away his savings, hitchhiked to Alaska, walked into the wilderness alone, and starved to death in 1992, fascinated not just New York Times bestselling author Jon Krakauer, but also the rest of the nation. Krakauer's book,Into the Wild, became an international bestseller, translated into thirty-one languages, and Sean Penn's inspirational film by the same name further skyrocketed Chris McCandless to global fame. But the real story of Chris’s life and his journey has not yet been told - until now. The missing pieces are finally revealed in The Wild Truth, written by Carine McCandless, Chris's beloved and trusted sister. Featured in both the book and film, Carine has wrestled for more than twenty years with the legacy of her brother's journey to self-discovery, and now tells her own story while filling in the blanks of his. Carine was Chris's best friend, the person with whom he had the closest bond, and who witnessed firsthand the dysfunctional and violent family dynamic that made Chris willing to embrace the harsh wilderness of Alaska. Growing up in the same troubled household, Carine speaks candidly about the deeper reality of life in the McCandless family. In the many years since the tragedy of Chris's death, Carine has searched for some kind of redemption. In this touching and deeply personal memoir, she reveals how she has learned that real redemption can only come from speaking the truth.

A returned soldier tried to shoot her dead in her brothel in 1917 and her 'bungalow' was at the centre of underworld violence in the 1920s. She returned to France before WWII to visit family and was bombed repeatedly out of homes there and captured by the Germans. She was a prisoner of war and one story has her in a concentration camp. She survived, returned to Perth in 1947, and took up business again in Roe Street, having made a fortune from the rent collected from her brothels while she was a prisoner of war, up until her death in 1953.

Book The Murder of Roseann Quinn

Download or read book The Murder of Roseann Quinn written by Peter Dover and published by Richard Poche. This book was released on 2021-07-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When does an enjoyment of varied interests become a double life? That is a question pertinent to the tragic and strange tale of Roseann Quinn. Many will be familiar with this name, even though her death dates back three and a half decades. That is because the case of Roseann Quinn is the one behind the well known 1977 film, 'Looking for Mr Goodbar', which starred Diane Keaton. It is also the inspiration for Judith Rossner's slightly less well known but still best selling novel of the same name, and the account by the New York Times journalist, Lacey Fosburgh (called 'Closing Time: The True Story of the Goodbar Murder.') Sometimes, it can be tricky to understand why some crimes make their way to the eye of popular culture and other, equally tragic, events fail to do so. Although, of course, every death is a tragedy for someone. But in the case of Roseann, the answer is clear to see.

Book The Disappearance of Bambi Woods

Download or read book The Disappearance of Bambi Woods written by Pete Dove and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-27 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of True Crime in the porn industrySuch scripts as existed for sleazy flicks such as Debbie Does Dallas were threadbare. Often, they consisted of little more than a hint of dialogue to be improvised in whatever location had been hi-jacked for filming - this was still a time when obscenity laws could see an entire cast and crew apprehended, arrested and tried for acts committed in the face of public decency. It was best not to advertise your whereabouts. For some of the industry's actors and actresses performance was a means to an end. For others, an unfortunate hole into which they fell, headfirst and out of full control. Debbie, the eponymous character of the film, was played by an attractive young star in the making called Bambi Woods. In fact, she wasn't called Bambi Woods; anybody aware of this lady's real name refuses to reveal it and while there is much speculation online, the validity of any claim is open to considerable question. For the purposes of this piece, the name Bambi Woods will need to suffice. Her real name may have been, or maybe still is, Debra DeSanto. Equally it might be Barbara Woodson. The uncertainty around the words in this article so far can be excused. Because, in the mid-1980s, it may have been the case that Bambi died, in lurid circumstances, in a drug and sex fueled orgy of excess. Or, perhaps she did not. Although widely reported, her death has never been confirmed. Certainly, plenty of those who claim to know the real person behind the character are confident that she is still alive.

Book Hank Greenberg

Download or read book Hank Greenberg written by John Rosengren and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baseball during the Great Depression of the 1930s galvanized communities and provided a struggling country with heroes. Jewish player Hank Greenberg gave the people of Detroit—and America—a reason to be proud. But America was facing more than economic hardship. Hitler’s agenda heightened the persecution of Jews abroad while anti-Semitism intensified political and social tensions in the U.S. The six-foot-four-inch Greenberg, the nation’s most prominent Jew, became not only an iconic ball player, but also an important and sometimes controversial symbol of Jewish identity and the American immigrant experience. Throughout his twelve-year baseball career and four years of military service, he heard cheers wherever he went along with anti-Semitic taunts. The abuse drove him to legendary feats that put him in the company of the greatest sluggers of the day, including Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, and Lou Gehrig. Hank’s iconic status made his personal dilemmas with religion versus team and ambition versus duty national debates. Hank Greenberg is an intimate account of his life—a story of integrity and triumph over adversity and a portrait of one of the greatest baseball players and most important Jews of the twentieth century. Download or read book Angel of Death Row written by Andrea D. Lyon and published by Regina Ryan Publishing Enterprises Incorporated. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteen times, death penalty defense lawyer Andrea D. Lyon has represented a client found guilty of capital murder. Nineteen times, she has argued for that individual's life to be spared. Nineteen times, she has succeeded. Dubbed the "Angel of Death Row" by the Chicago Tribune, Lyon was the first woman to serve as lead attorney in a death penalty case. Throughout her career, she has defended those accused of heinous acts and argued that, no matter their guilt or innocence, they deserved a chance at redemption. Now, for the first time, Lyon shares her story, from her early work as a Legal Aid attorney to her founding of the Center for Justice in Capital Cases. Full of courtroom drama, tragedy, and redemption, Angel of Death Row is a remarkable inside look at what drives Lyon to defend those who seem indefensible-and to win. There was Annette who was suspected of murdering her own daughter. There was Patrick, the convicted murderer who thirsted for knowledge and shared his love of books with Lyon when she visited him in jail. There was Lonnie, whose mental illness made him nearly impossible to save until the daughter who remembered his better self spoke on his behalf. There was Deirdre, who shared Lyon's cautious optimism that her wrongful conviction would finally be overturned, allowing her to see her grandchildren born while she was in prison. And there was Madison Hobley, the man whose name made international headlines when he was wrongfully charged with the murder of his family and sentenced to death. These clients trusted Lyon with their stories-and their lives. Driven by an overwhelming sense of justice, fairness, and morality, she fought for them in the courtroom and in the raucous streets, staying by their sides as they struggled through real tragedy and triumphed in startling ways. Angel of Death Row is the compelling memoir of Lyon's unusual journey and groundbreaking career.

This book was released on 2021-06-02 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides readers with a study of the characteristics that make life unique for sexual minorities in Brazil while also viewing Brazil in relation to global LGBT sociopolitical movements. It critically assesses the complex relationship(s) between the visual arts and political activism, carefully analyzing artistic, cinematic, and photographic representations of LGBTQ identities. Brazil provides a useful case to example, with the cultivation of ambiguity in contemporary (re)constructions of queer life. In this book, the author conducts the first comprehensive discourse analysis of the dynamics and features of the largest LGBT Pride Parade in the world. This problematizes and analyzes the relationship between burgeoning critical socio-political movements and institutions and the language and new media discourses used to configure and conceptualize them. The aim of this project is to create a theoretical scholarly framework promoting linkages between political activism and academic scholarship and by using discourse analysis, the intricacies of terminology Brazilian sexual minorities adopt and adapt, illustrating the development of LGBTQ identities through performative language use.
