Book Bryophyte Ecology

  • Author : A. Smith
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Bryophyte Ecology written by A. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an increasing interest in bryophyte ecology over the past 100 or so years, initially of a phytosociological nature but, additionally, in recent years, of an experimental nature as well. Early studies of bryophyte communities have led to detailed investigations into the relationships between the plants and their environment. Ecological papers, the large number of which is evidenced by the length of the bibliographies in the subsequent chapters, have appeared in numerous journals. Yet, apart from review chapters, by H. Gams and P. W. Richards in Manual of Bryology, edited b:; H. Verdoorn in 1932 and chapters in E. V. Watson's Structure and Life of Bryophytes, Prem Puri's Bryophytes - A Broad Perspective and D. H. S. Richardson's The Biology of Mosses, published in 1972,1973 and 1981 respectively, no general accounts of bryophyte ecology have been published. Although the Bryophyta is a relatively small division of plants, with between 14000 and 21000 species the interest that they have aroused is out of all proportion to the size either of the plants or of the division. It is evident, however, that despite their relative insigni ficance they play an important ecological role, especially in extreme environments and, in the case of bryophytes in tropical cloud forests and of Sphagnum, may even be a dominant factor in the ecology of the area concerned.

Book Is Your HMO Killing You

Download or read book Is Your HMO Killing You written by Stephen Rothstein and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if your HMO came up with the perfect way to make money? What if it killed you? Tom Kanon is an international expert in nanotechnology who uses microbots to deliver healthcare directly to the organs and cells of the human body. He envisions a world where disease has been vanquished and designer robots police the human body. Microbots with specialized tools will remove cardiac plaque, carry hormones and enzymes where they are needed, and act as portable insulin pumps, miniature defibrillators, and pacemakers. Kanon's nanobot research soon attracts the attention of Jack Taylor, the CEO of Omni Health HMO. Taylor shrewdly woos Kanon into accepting a position as the head of the emergency room at Omni to tighten the company's stranglehold on the market. Kanon thought he knew everything about his field-until people start dying at his hospital and none of the other staff members care. As Tom struggles to find out why, he races against time to ensure the safety of his patients and loved ones against those who want them dead. But wanting to trust someone and knowing whom to trust are two very different things in the world of global corporate domination fueled by the bottom line.

Book Security Technology and Global Politics

Download or read book Security Technology and Global Politics written by Mark Lacy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses some of the key problems explored in Paul Virilio’s theorising on war and security. Paul Virilio has developed a provocative series of writings on how modern societies have shaped the acceleration of military/security technologies – and how technologies of security and acceleration have transformed society, economy and politics. His examination of the connections between geopolitics, war, speed, technology and control are viewed as some of the most challenging and disturbing interventions on the politics of security in the twenty-first century, interventions that help us understand a world that confronts problems that increasingly emerge from the desire to make life safer, faster, networked and more efficient. Security, Technology and Global Politics examines some of the key concepts and concerns in Virilio’s writings on security, society and technology: endo-colonization, fear and the war on terror; cities and panic; cinema and war; ecological security and integral accidents; universities and ideas of progress. Critics often point to an apocalyptic or fatalistic element to Virilio’s writings on global politics, but this book challenges this apocalyptic reading of Virilio’s work, suggesting that – while he doesn’t provide us with easy solutions to the problems we face – the political force in Virilio’s work comes from the questions he leaves us with about speed, security and global politics in times of crisis, terror and fear. This book will be of interest to students of critical security studies, political theory, sociology, political geography, cultural studies and IR in general.
