The trial, which took place in Boston, before his Honor Judge Measles, commenced in the forenoon of January 13th, extended through that day and the next, and on the following morning was brought to a sudden conclusion, in a manner so striking and unusual in itself, as well as triumphant to the defendant, that the case has been invested with a peculiar interest, both to the profession and to the community. This was the first trial of the kind in this Commonwealth, since the enactment of the law of June, 1856, providing that parties may be witnesses. The clear and convincing statement of the defendant, as well as his admirable bearing on the stand, during a thorough examination and cross-examination of more than two hours, contributed in great part to the favorable and decisive result of the action. The material evidence in the case, as taken from the notes of the defendant's counsel, was in substance as follows. Cabot, in the autopsy room of the Pathological Laboratory. There will be no charge whatever for admission or attendance. The exercise will be conducted as usual, by reading two or three clinical records, discussing them to reach a diagnosis, and then comparing our results with the necropsy findings, which Dr. Oscar Richardson will read and explain. Each physician in attendance is given a copy of the rec ords discussed, follows the discussion, questions and comments so far as he is willing, and can pre serve the mimeographed copy with his own notes for future reference. Inasmuch as the con dition that we are dealing with is a fermenta tion of sugar, the chief principle to bear in mind is to feed a low percentage of sugar. Since there is often a secondary fermentation of fat, it is usually desirable to reduce some what the fat in the food offered. A high pro tein in an easily assimilable form in combina tion with a low sugar and a fairly low fat gives us a food which will stop excessive fermenta tion by withdrawing the fermentable sub stance, and also by tending to produce an alka line intestine instead of an acid one. An alka line intestine containing little sugar also favors the formation of solid soapy stools, a condition which is desirable, as in this way the diarrhea is controlled. Small amounts of food should be offered at first as the food tolerance for every element is much lowered. Details of Feeding. Any milk modification which is put together on these principles is a suitable food upon which to feed cases of sugar fermentation. The exact method to be used will vary somewhat according to whether the baby is to be fed on a home modification or from a milk laboratory.
