Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 20: February 13, 1839 Disease of the foot.-the great toe was very frequently diseased the smaller toes were not nearly so often affected; he had seen, he should think, not more than ten or twelve cases of disease in the small toes during the last fifteen years. The great toe was much more ex posed to injury than any of the others. The disease commenced either in the bone itself, or in the articulations; and here were a great many specimens in which it had taken place in the metatarsal bone. Some times it commenced in the bone, and implicated the joint, while it often, again, commenced in the articulations, and, most frequently, in that one between the metatarsal bone and phalanx. Here is a speci men removed a few days ago from an unhealthy lad, in whom swelling and pain on the inner part of the foot came on without any assignable cause, and a collection of matter formed. He (mr. L.) suspected, at first sight, that the bone was diseased. The abscess was opened freely, and on introducing a probe, some days afterwards, it was found to pass into the cancellated structure. The disease, as they might perceive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 44: February to August, 1851 Sir, - I do not consider it proper to fill the pages of medical journals with cases of ordinary interest, such as are frequently seen in the practice of most physicians and surgeons. But there is a class of cases, which begin in real or supposed injuries, involving litigation, and where medical opinion is to be decisive; and these cases, though founded on attested facts, may result in conditions against the rule - and proved facts, as exceptions, may be classed as improbabilities. Theory, raised by men of high social position and deserved reputation, against the detailed certainties collected under the observation of a younger practitioner, may prevail, when discussed by a jury whose minds have not been enlightened upon medical subjects. A practitioner of very limited experience may occasionally be called to a case of surgery, unique in its class. It is not the less so, because older professional gentlemen in a long and extensive practice have never happened to see a similar case, or to have read or heard of one. The statistics of surgery are for the most part based upon military, naval or civil hospital reports. These fields of practice are extensive. But surgery is not fairly represented in its results, by the facts furnished from these sources alone. The resources and accommodations of swell governed hospital are undoubtedly superior to those at the command of the majority of persons exposed to accident or suffering from disease and yet, for a reason which others may find, the surgery of private practice, so far as I am acquainted with it, is more successful, if in skilful hands, than that of the hospital. In this consideration, the more formidable operations may be excluded - such cases naturally finding their termination in the hospital, for reasons appreciated by all who are acquainted with the matter. The trial, which took place in Boston, before his Honor Judge Measles, commenced in the forenoon of January 13th, extended through that day and the next, and on the following morning was brought to a sudden conclusion, in a manner so striking and unusual in itself, as well as triumphant to the defendant, that the case has been invested with a peculiar interest, both to the profession and to the community. This was the first trial of the kind in this Commonwealth, since the enactment of the law of June, 1856, providing that parties may be witnesses. The clear and convincing statement of the defendant, as well as his admirable bearing on the stand, during a thorough examination and cross-examination of more than two hours, contributed in great part to the favorable and decisive result of the action. The material evidence in the case, as taken from the notes of the defendant's counsel, was in substance as follows.
