Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, 1839, Vol. 19 The description of the affection, given by Sydenham,1s so good, and agrees so accurately with its appearances, at the present day, that I shall read it to you at length, and adopt it, in most particulars, in preference to more modern accounts. It cannot be amended materially, except by examining the symptoms with the aid of the numerical method; a task which, at present, I am not able to undertake. This excellent description of Sydenham' 5 shows his powers of obser vation in favorable contrast with some of modern times. His general account of the disease holds good 111 the cases which we observed at the hospital. Thus, our symptoms of the first day, like his, were chilliness and cold shivedngs. The second day we had the catarrhal symptoms, connected with coryza and the flow of tears, as described by Sydenham. This is the best sign to distinguish measles, in its incipient stage, from other exanthemata. In this stage, the other exanthematous affections offer no mark by which they can be diagnosticated with any certainty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 20: February to August, 1839 Excrsron of the joints, said Mr. Liston, was an Operation which had been practised, he feared, rather indiscriminately, in cases where, per haps, complete rest might have saved the patient the su 'ering and risk of an Operation; or again, where the disease was so far advanced that no hope of recovery from this operation was left. It was, however, a highly advisable and successful proceeding in many cases. There was, generally speaking, little dificulty in e 'ecting the dissrticulation, the ligaments being almost destroyed; though, in the case of the elbow which was operated on the other day, there was a great deposit of new bone round the diseased part, with a condensation of the soft parts, which rendered the proceeding somewhat more dificult than usual. This deposit of new bone, as he had already remarked, would disappear by absorption after the ulcerated and unsound articulating ends were te moved; further, it was not at all necesse to interfere. Young subjects might, after excision, recover some uselliil motion of the elbow-joint; the muscles of the neighborhood formed new attachments, new liga ments were fanned, and bone deposited. This was not to be expected in the adult, in whom it was a safer and better plan to endeavorto obtain a sti ' joint at the most favorable angle.
