I turned from the scene and followed my father into the hotel. Inside was more action than there was in the streets. Four men were talking near the counter; that is, one man was talking, and the other three were listen ing with what appeared to be grins on their faces. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin School Register, Vol. 57: Boston Latin School; March 1938 In the first place, the Latin School student goes through a certain routine every day. Even so, his life is not monotonous and humdrum. For instance, every week day, he arises at seven o'clock in the morning (or seven-thirty, or eight), washes, eats his breakfast, packs his books, and arrives in school at eight-thirty (or nine, or nine-thirty). Let us pass Over the next painful five and a half hours, as they are particularly systematized. At any rate, the student is out of class at two-thirty, packs his books, engages in the usual small-talk, and leaves at two-forty. Arriving home, he enjoys some form of recreation for an hour. He does an hour's home work before eating, returns to homework, finishes up, and goes to bed as soon as possible - perhaps at ten - thirty or eleven o'clock. Let us now take up the system from nine to two-thirty. Did we say that he finishes his homework at night? That was wrong. In the majority of cases, his Latin is done before school (if he can get in early enough to join in the huddle), and some other home lesson in the study and home-room periods; that is, if he can write fast enough. Most numerous of all are the formulas for fixing up what he has not the time to do, and almost equal in number are the systems for applying these formulas. In fact, so numerous are they that we are unable in this short article to cite them specifically. But there is a system for evading homework, for evading misdemeanor marks received for evading homework, for evading teachers in order to evade the marks, and so forth. Like the brook, we could go on forever in this tale of evasion. These systems are so natural, albeit they do reduce life to a routine, that a boy can and does follow them without thinking about them. He does not say to him self, What shall I do next? He goes ahead and does it. Thus, his mind is more free to devote his thinking to the important matters of his subjects. Too, the routine is well broken up by variations one encounters in study. One day he must learn one thing, next day he must learn another; one day he finds a new thought, the day after, another new thought. He is forever encountering novelties (in the way of human actions, perhaps!) in the hours that he attends classes, and he enjoys himself in the recess - and lunch - periods. These good citizens express fears that such radicals will only too easily succeed in implanting their doc trines in the rash, immature minds of the youth of the country. On the surface, such an unselfish, fostering attitude would seem to be excellent and, granting that such menaces exist and that the younger generation is inexperienced and even foolhardy, also quite proper. And yet that is not the complete picture; certain basic elements and principles have been neglected. In the first place, it is not in accordance with the American system of democracy to attempt to repress things. The government itself is held in equilibrium by a series of balancing, counteracting forces. No matter what party or person or principle holds sway, despite the general acclaim for it, there is, and always must be, an opposing faction which stabilizes and points out the defects of the other's program. It is the basis of American life; each man brings his opinions and plans - his grist, to the public mill where it is thrashed out, assailed, and studied by his fellow-men from every point of view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin School Register, Vol. 30: April 1911 The Boston High School Regimen tal Athletic Meet was held in the South Armory, on Saturday, March 18, and resulted in an easy victory for the English High School. This meet has been won by the English High School team for several years past. The High School of Commerce was second, with 19 points, and the Boston Latin School was third, with 13 1-2 points. The winning team piled up 37 1 - 2 points. The remaining points were divided among the Brighton, Dorchester, Mechanic Arts, and Rox bury Schools. The prohibition of Spiked shoes took much interest from the games, and caused several of the runners to fall. The showing that our team made in the various events was rather disappointing on the whole, but this was almost counterbalanced by the splendid victory of our relay team over the fast English High School team in the last race of the meet. We meet to-day to say farewell to this friend of ours, which we can always rever ence and love, but which we leave forever, and which we can never know again. And we have met to tell of the things we have done in its company and under its guidance, and of the things we expect to do when we are far from it.
