Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Booksellers' League: A History of Its Formation and Ten Years of Its Work Before The Booksellers' League was called into existence, in 1894, the booktrade held a unique position among the trades of the United States in that it lacked organization of any kind. While even its allied branches - the stationers, printers and bookbinders - had combined for defensive as well as offensive action, and to bring its individual members into closer fellowship, socially, the members of the booktrade, with a strange fatality, chose to remain separate individuals, every one for himself; indeed, it almost seemed as though each individual member of the booktrade strove to keep as far as possible apart from his associates. When on the occasion of the death of this or that leading member of the trade, some of his confreres, for once deferring to convention, stood about his coffin, it was frequently found that but few of them had ever looked upon his face before. Book excerpt: The epic tale of the five owners who shepherded the NFL through its tumultuous early decades and built the most popular sport in America The National Football League is a towering, distinctly American colossus spewing out $14 billion in annual revenue. But it was not always a success. In The League, John Eisenberg focuses on the pioneering sportsmen who kept the league alive in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, when its challenges were many and its survival was not guaranteed. At the time, college football, baseball, boxing, and horseracing dominated America's sports scene. Art Rooney, George Halas, Tim Mara, George Preston Marshall, and Bert Bell believed in pro football when few others did and ultimately succeeded only because at critical junctures each sacrificed the short-term success of his team for the longer-term good of the league. At once a history of a sport and a remarkable story of business ingenuity, The League is an essential read for any fan of our true national pastime.

Book The National Security League 1914 1922

Download or read book The National Security League 1914 1922 written by Kerry Segrave and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early 20th century saw the founding of the National Security League, a nationalistic nonprofit organization committed to an expanded military, conscripted service and meritocracy. This book details its history, from its formation in December 1914 through 1922, at which point it was a spent force in decline. Founded by wealthy corporate lawyers based in New York City, it had secret backers in the capitalist class, who had two goals in mind. One was to profit immensely from the newly begun World War I. The other was to control the working classes in times of both war and peace. This agenda was presented to the public under the guise of preparedness, patriotism, and Americanization. Although the league was eventually found by Congress to have violated election spending limits, no sanctions of any kind were ever applied. This history details the secret machinations of an organization dedicated to solidifying the grip of the capitalist class over workers, all under the cover of American pride.

Book Old Books Rare Friends

Download or read book Old Books Rare Friends written by Madeline B. Stern and published by Main Street Books. This book was released on 2012-05-30 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louisa May Alcott once wrote that she had taken her pen for a bridegroom. Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine Stern, friends and business partners for fifty years, have in many ways taken up their pens and passion for literature much in the same way. The "Holmes & Watson" of the rare book business, Rostenberg and Stern are renowned for unlocking the hidden secret of Louisa May Alcott's life when they discovered her pseudonym, A.M. Barnard, along with her anonymously published "blood and thunder" stories on subjects like transvestitism, hashish smoking, and feminism. Old Books, Rare Friends describes their mutual passion for books and literary sleuthing as they take us on their earliest European book buying jaunts. Using what they call Finger-spitzengefühl, the art of evaluating antiquarian books by handling, experience, and instinct, we are treated to some of their greatest discoveries amid the mildewed basements of London's booksellers after the Blitz. We experience the thrill of finding one of the earliest known books printed in America between 1617-1619 by the Pilgrim Press and learn about the influential role of publisher-printers from the fifteenth century. Like a precious gem, Old Books, Rare Friends is a book to treasure about the companionship of two rare friends and their shared passion for old books.
