Download or read book Honor Shame and Guilt written by Daniel Y. Wu and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-07-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Wu explores how the concepts honor, shame, and guilt function in the book of Ezekiel, as well as in the wider contexts of their general use in anthropological or social-scientific approaches to biblical studies. He frames Ezekiel’s key terms for honor (kabod), shame (bosh ), and guilt ('awah) within an analysis of a broad perspective on these terms in the body of the Old Testament as a way of forming the “concept spheres” within which the specific instances of each term in Ezekiel sit. Wu gleans insight from the dominant contemporary definitions of honor, shame, and guilt in the fields of psychology and anthropology and their application to biblical studies, and he reflects on how this broader context informs and is informed by his analysis of Ezekiel. The study concludes by drawing together the implications and contribution of the analysis of Ezekiel and applying them to the development of social-scientific models for the future.
Download or read book Somewhere in the Bible written by Harris F. Allen and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2011-04-27 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For all who have found the Bible difficult to read and science hard to understand, this author did too! Wouldnt it be wonderful if someone would take the time to study things such as difficult verses? Also, would it be helpful if somebody wrote it in a book? Have we really found real truth to Noahs flood? Does anyone know the physics that could cause such a global occurrence? Someone has now researched for most of a lifetime, plus three extra years of intensive study. The answers are not always easy, the solutions not always simple. Modern Science finds more evidence almost daily that there once was a flood of such proportions. Author, Harris F. Allen has spent countless hours attempting to answer his own questions. He has a few tools including much science and Bible in his college studies. Always an active overachiever, Allen has become deaf and partially disabled. That left far more time and greater opportunity than he could ever imagine. Having a history of regular church attendance from his early youth, the author received a reasonable background, but always had some unanswered questions. So, in pharmacy school in a Baptist college, he excelled in New and Old Testament studies. Chemistry and science of various sorts were the main topics of study, and by adding Bible, that is an ideal mix for this discussion. Allen will present his findings from both a scientific view and a Biblical understanding. He will explain what he found about difficult verses and some parts of the Bible that seem at times to be in conflict. He will also discuss the physics, biochemistry and other dynamics that could be involved in such a worldwide flood. Regardless of science or Biblical belief, the flood did occur at about the time the Bible said it did.

Book excerpt: This book tells how I represented myself (with no law degree) to the Supreme Court of the United States to show how there was nothing to prove that I was the person that I was alleged to be. It also tells how everyone kept passing the buck and didn't want to investigate my case, or listen to anything that I had to the Supreme Court of the United States. It's all good. The opposing side never gave me a run for my money or challenged anything that I presented to any court. From the Circuit Court of Maryland in Baltimore City to the Supreme Court of the United States.

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Ezekiel written by Corrine Carvalho and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-30 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current state of scholarship on the book of Ezekiel, one of the three Major Prophets, is robust. Ezekiel, unlike most pre-exilic prophetic collections, contains overt clues that its primary circulation was as a literary text and not a collection of oral speeches. The author was highly educated, the theology of the book is "dim," and its view of humanity is overwhelmingly negative. In The Oxford Handbook of Ezekiel, editor Corrine Carvalho brings together scholars from a diverse range of interpretive perspectives to explore one of the Bible's most debated books. Consisting of twenty-seven essays, the Handbook provides introductions to the major trends in the scholarship of Ezekiel, covering its history, current state, and emerging directions. After an introductory overview of these trends, each essay discusses an important element in the scholarly engagement with the book. Several essays discuss the history of the text (its historical context, redactional layers, text criticism, and use of other Israelite and near eastern traditions). Others focus on key themes in the book (such as temple, priesthood, law, and politics), while still others look at the book's reception history and contextual interpretations (including art, Christian use, gender approaches, postcolonial approaches, and trauma theory). Taken together, these essays demonstrate the vibrancy of Ezekiel research in the twenty-first century.

Download or read book WHY PROTESTANT BIBLES ARE SMALLER written by Steve Christie and published by Christian Publishing House. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over 600 references, "Why Protestant Bibles are smaller" defends the Protestant Old Testament canon using mostly Catholic resources including the Vatican, EWTN, Catholic Answers, and quotations from contemporary Catholic authors like Gary Michuta ("Why Catholic Bibles Are Bigger"), Jimmy Akin ("The Fathers Know Best"), and Trent Horn ("Why We're Catholic"). It utilizes the New Testament to demonstrate Jesus, His disciples, and the New Testament writers espoused to the books of the Protestant Old Testament. Using Christian and Jewish sources from antiquity, such as Eusebius' The Church History, it explains why the canonical lists from early church fathers, early church councils, and the books in the Septuagint, Vulgate, Douay-Rheims, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and even Popes and Cardinals were not identical, and what Jesus, His disciples, and the first century church actually believed about the canon. It includes comments from former Catholics and Eastern Orthodox on the authority of the Protestant Old Testament. It lists nearly 300 specific phrases used in the New Testament to describe Old Testament books, which are only found in the Protestant Old Testament. It concludes with examples of errors and contradictions in the books from the Catholic Old Testament to demonstrate those "extra books" are not "God-breathed" Scripture. This book assures the reader the Protestant Bible contains the complete Inspired Christian canon, which is why Protestant Bibles are smaller.
