Book excerpt: Joseph Tiritilli, aka Joey Jet, exemplifies the success possible in America today by using ambition, a willingness to take risk, and a strong work ethic to make the most of available opportunities. Joey Jet came up the hard way in Totowa, New Jersey; fifteen miles from Manhattan, the heart of New York City. His grandfather a blacksmith in a Pennsylvania coal mine; his father an honest, hard working truck driver; and his mother a professional switchboard operator, Joey left school at sixteen. He became a three time small business owner/operator, soloed at Lincoln Park, New Jersey N07, and became a private pilot by age twenty-five. Moving to Deerfield Beach, Florida, Joey Jet continued learning to fly at Pompano Beach Airpark's Pompano Air Center, earning his Commercial Airplane license and becoming a Certified Flight Instructor under the tutelage of R. Dan Baker. Joey learned to fly Learjets when he was hired by Harvey N. Hop at Fort Lauderdale's Hop-A-Jet, Inc. Joey Jet has been a Learjet Captain flying the rich and famous throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean for more than twenty-five years. Fasten your seatbelt and enjoy this compilation of stories from some of Joey Jet's most memorable flights. Stories include James Patterson, Roger King, Puff Daddy Imposter, James Lovell, Billy Joel, Enrique, Paris Hilton, Suze Orman, John Schnatter - Papa John's Pizza, Jackie Mason, Denzel Washington, Paulina Porizkova, Diana Ross, Shakira, Henryk de Kwiatkowski, Lee Greenwood, Elie Wiesel, Preston Henn, Patrick Park, Robert Redford, Don Whittington, Dear Abby, General H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General aviation encompasses all the ways aircraft are used beyond commercial and military flying: private flights, barnstormers, cropdusters, and so on. Authors Janet and Michael Bednarek have taken on the formidable task of discussing the hundred-year history of this broad and diverse field by focusing on the most important figures and organizations in general aviation and the major producers of general aviation aircraft and engines. This history examines the many airplanes used in general aviation, from early Wright and Curtiss aircraft to the Piper Cub and the Lear Jet. The authors trace the careers of birdmen, birdwomen, barnstormers, and others who shaped general aviation—from Clyde Cessna and the Stinson family of San Antonio to Olive Ann Beech and Paul Poberezny of Milwaukee. They explain how the development of engines influenced the development of aircraft, from the E-107 that powered the 1929 Aeronca C-2, the first affordable personal aircraft, to the Continental A-40 that powered the Piper Cub, and the Pratt and Whitney PT-6 turboprop used on many aircraft after World War II. In addition, the authors chart the boom and bust cycle of general aviation manufacturers, the rising costs and increased regulations that have accompanied a decline in pilots, the creation of an influential general aviation lobby in Washington, and the growing popularity of “type” clubs, created to maintain aircraft whose average age is twenty-eight years. This book provides readers with a sense of the scope and richness of the history of general aviation in the United States. An epilogue examining the consequences of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, provides a cautionary note.

Download or read book Wichita written by and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book commemorates Wichita's role as Air Capital of the World. It takes readers from the early birds and barnstormers to the pioneers and entrepreneurs who established dozens of aircraft and associated factories in the 1920s. The story continues with the founding of Cessna, Beechcraft and Stearman (which became Boeing Wichita, then Spirit AeroSystems) and the massive build-up during World War II. Robust post-war growth got another boost when Bill Lear came to town and launched the business jet revolution with his Learjet. Today Wichita remains at the center of global aviation design and manufacturing with Textron Aviation, Spirit AeroSystems, Bombardier Learjet, Airbus and many dozens of smaller aviation manufacturers, suppliers and support organizations. What made Wichita the Air Capital? Flat prairies resembled one enormous landing field. Southwesterly winds added extra thrust to get and stay aloft. Farming and small manufacturing provided a legion of imaginative, industrious problem-solvers. Local boosters latched onto and promoted anything that flew. The city's central location provided an ideal refueling stop for coast-to-coast airmail routes. And oil generated a class of savvy, starry-eyed entrepreneurs who both used aircraft and had money to invest. Wichita brought it all together. The people. The promise. The planes. On Sept. 2, 1911, Albin Longren became the first person to build and fly an airplane in Kansas. His pusher-type biplane lifted off from a hayfield with a four-gallon gas tank and "flight instruments" that consisted of a pocket watch and barometer. The first plane built in Wichita rolled out of production in 1917, when Clyde Cessna assembled his Comet. Wichita's first commercial aircraft, the Swallow, came from the E.M. Laird Airplane Co. in 1920. By 1928, Wichita was general aviation's manufacturing grand central, producing 120 airplanes a week - a quarter of all U.S. output. A Chamber of Commerce Air Capital logo contest celebrated the city's 16 aircraft manufacturers, six aircraft engine factories, 11 airports and dozen flying schools. Wichita produces more airplanes - almost 300,000 to date - and offers more skilled aviation workers than any other city. Aviation forms Wichita's heritage and future.

Book excerpt: This improbable aviation adventure will take you on a thirty-six year journey from five-star hotels to back alleys and greasy cargo ramps. Join the author, Ace Abbott, on a roller coaster ride of an aviation career, as he transitions from hobnobbing with international icons, like Jimmy Buffett, to bartering in order to get some critical jet fuel. The author s primary source of motivation in writing his story is the desire to share a wonderful adventure with pilots of all backgrounds who have had similar careers and to inform aspiring pilots of the unique nuances of an aviation career. Twenty-five employers later, you will get to ride on Ace's final flight in a 727 while you gain insight into the potential catastrophe of a pilot s brief but potentially fatal inattention. This aviation exposé will introduce the reader to aspects of aviation never before seen from the previously unexplored dark side of commercial aviation. The secondary theme of this book is very relevant to the current front and center news topic of aviation safety. Included in The Rogue Aviator is an insider s look at commercial aviation and the FAA. With today s focus on aviation safety and the role of the FAA to insure our safety in the air, the author addresses his thoughts on these vital areas.
