Book The Book of the Prophet Isaiah Chapters 40 66

Download or read book The Book of the Prophet Isaiah Chapters 40 66 written by A. S. Herbert and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1975-10-16 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapters 40-66 of the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, addressed to the Jews in exile in Babylon, belong to a period from about 547 BC when Babylonian power was weakening before the might of King Cyrus of Persia. Isaiah not only saw this as the will of God, but asserted that God was directing events in order that Yahweh's people might be released from exile. The lyrical, exhortatory quality of the earlier chapters in particular resulted from his conviction that it was his task to prepare the exiles for their new role and to restore their faith and confidence. The first volume of Professor Herbert's commentary on Isaiah, dealing with chapters 1-39, was published in 1973. In this second volume, Professor Herbert again introduces the text with a discussion of its nature, form and composition and historical setting. The N.E.B. translation of the text then follows, alternating with sections of commentary in the style now established for this series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary explores some of the most thrilling chapters of the Old Testament. The Israelites' exile is at an end, and in Isaiah 40-55 the prophet calls them to leave Babylon. Chapters 55-66 are about how these people deal with aspects of restored life in Jerusalem, the old political and religious centre, but now so different. Here also are significant passages about a Servant of the Lord, and the challenging call to servanthood on the part of God's people. Michael Thompson examines these chapters both against their original backgrounds and also as scripture for God's people today.

Book excerpt: Isaiah 40-66, by Marvin A. Sweeney, is the nineteenth published volume in The Forms of Old Testament Literature (FOTL), a series that provides a form-critical analysis of the books and units in the Hebrew Bible. Building on his earlier FOTL volume Isaiah 1-39, Sweeney here presents his analysis of Isaiah 40-66 within both the synchronic literary form of Isaiah and the diachronic history of its composition. In keeping with the methodology and goals of the FOTL series, Isaiah 40-66 offers detailed examinations of the formal structure of the chapters covered; the genres that function within these chapters; the literary, historical, and social settings of the text; and the overall interpretation of Isaiah 40-66 and its constituent textual units. Including a glossary of the genres and formulas discussed, this commentary will be a useful resource to anyone wishing to engage more deeply with this central book in the Hebrew Bible.
