When the Editor undertook his self-imposed task, it was his intention simply to confine his views to the production of a new edition of Aiken's popular Calendar of Nature." He soon, however, found materials so crowd upon him as to force him to abandon his original plan, and so extensive were the alterations and additions that it was thought expedient to give up the original title also.
