Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Goat: Containing Full Particulars of the Various Breeds of Goats and Their Profitable Management The position that the goat deserves to occupy amongst the people of this country, and that which it actually holds, are, however, two different things. In spite of its useful qualities it is still far from being recognised to the extent that it merits. This is not the case in Ireland nor in most parts of the Continent, where it is highly prized for the virtues of its milk. In the Emerald Isle large numbers are bred annually, and although they lead a rough life, they contribute materially both by their milk and flesh to the welfare of the Irish peasant. The sub joined figures show the distribution of goats throughout Ireland according to the last report. The table further shows, however, that the number of goats kept at the present time is considerably less than in 1881. At the same time, large numbers are exported annually from Ireland into England. During three weeks in July, 1880, these exports amounted to as many as 900 head. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of the Goat in its original edition was the first work devoted to the subject printed in the English language. First published in London in the 1880s, it is now a very scarce and desirable book in any early edition. We have now re-published the 1917 edition incorporating the original text and vintage photos and illustrations. This edition had been considerably revised and enlarged giving many more pages of comprehensive information on this popular animal. Three hundred and sixty six pages contain twenty nine detailed chapters: Origin and Early History of the Goat; Varieties of Goats; British Milch Goats; Continental Milch Goats; Oriental and African Goats; The Angora or "Mohair" Goat; The Cashmere or "Shawl" Goat; Cross Bred Goats; Selecting a Milch Goat; Housing; Pasturing; Stall Feeding; Breeding; Rearing Kids; Milking; Goats' Milk; Its Virtues and Utilities; Goats' Butter and Cheese; The Flesh of the Goat; Other Products; The Goat as a Foster Mother; He-Goats and Goat-Carriages; Goat Farming; Shows and Showing; The British Goat Society; Goats and the Malta Fever; Diseases, Parasites, etc; Dishorning; Preventing Growth of Horns; Breeding Hornless Goats. etc. Since this book was first published the advance in goat keeping has been most marked. The improvement in the culture of the goat as a source of milk, fleece and meat has been manifest not in England alone, but globally. This historical record will be of major interest to goat keepers worldwide, with much of its content remaining relevant even to this day.

Book excerpt: From “Three Billy Goats Gruff” to The Men Who Stare at Goats, this inimitable ruminant has long played a role in our literature and popular culture. And yet, our relationship with the “poor man’s cow” is oddly ambivalent. In the beautifully illustrated Goat, Joy Hinson explores the reason behind this unease while presenting readers with the animal’s fascinating natural history and its effect on myth, medicine, and culture. Hinson traces the history of goats from their evolution millions of years ago through their domestication and role in the modern world. She delves into our interaction with endangered wild goat species and the familiar farmyard goat, and she reveals the harm done by humans in indiscriminately importing tamed goats, leading to huge feral populations in Australia and on the Galapagos Islands. Hinson also considers the place of goat products in culinary and medical traditions, from the pouring of goat urine into the ear as a cure for neck pain to the belief that a goat’s bezoar stone can be used as an antidote for poison. From Goat Festivals in the United States to the Christmas Goat in Sweden, Goat takes readers on an exciting ride through this frequently neglected animal’s history, life, and role in today’s world.

Book Italian Ecocinema Beyond the Human

Download or read book Italian Ecocinema Beyond the Human written by Elena Past and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-09 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entangled in the hybrid fields of ecomedia studies and material ecocriticism, Elena Past examines five Italian films shot on location and ponders the complex relationships that the production crews developed with the filming locations and the nonhuman cast members. She uses these films—Red Desert (1964), The Winds Blows Round (2005), Gomorrah (2008), Le quattro volte (2010), and Return to the Aeolian Islands (2010)—as case studies to explore pressing environmental questions such as cinema's dependence on hydrocarbons, the toxic waste crisis in the region of Campania, and our reliance on the nonhuman world. Dynamic and unexpected actors emerge as the subjects of each chapter: playful goats, erupting volcanoes, airborne dust particles, fluid petroleum, and even the sound of silence. Based on interviews with crew members and close readings of the films themselves, Italian Ecocinema Beyond the Human theorizes how filmmaking practice—from sound recording to location scouting to managing a production—helps uncover cinema's ecological footprint and its potential to open new perspectives on the nonhuman world.
