He immigrated to America and family's home in Virginia was probably in what is now Berkeley Co., West Virginia. All his children were born in that county between 1779 and 1790. He married Nancy Kilgore in 1777. She died in Ohio ca. 1841. Descendants live in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Texas, Kansas and elsewhere.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Generations of William McFarland and Nancy Kilgore, 1740-1912 As a teacher and clergyman, it has been my whole business in life to deal with persons rather than with things. My time is given to a study of people and to the consideration of personal life and character. It has been my good fortune to know intimately and personally the people of more than twenty communities in 7 states. Some of these communities are quite large, comprising several thousand people. It is also my good fortune to have a somewhat intimate personal ao quaintance with quite a number of the persons whose names occur in this book, and I suppose they are a fair average Of the whole. I am very glad to bear testimony that the mcfarlands, measured by any fair standard of industry, religion, business, or private life are far superior to the average of the people, particularly in those qualities of honesty and reliability which make people valuable to society and worth knowing personally. My love and respect for you has grown much since I began to compile this history. You have been on my mind and heart in such a way as to deeply increase my interest in each one Of you as I learned of you and your life. This was true, even of those few (happily, very few) who were so glad to hear from me, that they allowed me to write to them several times, enclosing each time a list of questions and a stamp, without making any reply. I am sorry that they did not realize how glad I would have been to hear from them. No doubt they are very interesting persons, and I count it my personal loss that I do not know them better. On the whole the responses were prompt and the interest hearty. I think I made every reasonable enort to secure complete data for each name. In a few cases it was absolutely impossible to find the desired items. In other cases, but these very few, the data could easily have been given, but for some reason was withheld. Even half a dozen of my alluring and persuasive letters failed to secure a response. I say this that future generations if they find some data missing, may not lay the blame with me, nor with my heirs and assigns forever.
