Onias, a holy man of Jerusalem, had, in the people's opinion, obtained, by his prayers, rain from heaven 'in a great drought. The people thought, as did Balak in Balaam's time, that curses would be as effective as prayers. Therefore they pressed him to curse Aristobulus, and all who were with him. The old man, pressed by their importunities, lifted up his hand toward heaven, and prayed thus: "0 Lord God, creator of the univerte, since thote who are with us are thy people, and they who are betieged in thy temple are thy priettt, I pray that thou tcouldtt hear the prayer of neither of them againxt the other." The multitude became enraged, and Atoned to death the good Onlafl. The Romans were largely bribed by Aristobulus. Thoy forced ArCtas to raise the siege. Aristobulus pursued, routed, and slew great numbers of the army of Hyrcanus. Pompoy, the celebrated Roman general, was now at Damascus. Hyrcanus and Aristobulus pleaded their causes before him, first by their ambassadors, afterwards in person. The people declared against both. Pompey seized him in one of his castles, confined him m prison, and laid siege to Jerusalem. He was received in the city by the party of Hyrcanus. He besieged the temple and the Castle Baris, and took them in three months time. Though the Jews had observed, during the Maccabean wars, the law which they had made to fight, if attacked, on the Sabbath, they considered that they were not attacked when they aw the Romans arranging for attack their works...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: .Why Bother With History? argues for an increasingly important role for a revitalised historical study. Examining the motivations of past historians, the author rejects the ancient aspiration to a 'history for its own sake' and argues that historians' importance lies in their own adoption of a moral standpoint, from which a story of the past can be told, that facilitates the attainment of a future we desire. Inevitably controversial, in that it challenges many of the assumptions of modernist history, this is an interdisciplinary book, which draws in particular on psychology and literature.

Book Lamentations in Ancient and Contemporary Cultural Contexts

Download or read book Lamentations in Ancient and Contemporary Cultural Contexts written by Nancy C. Lee and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2008 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal tragedy and communal catastrophe up to the present day are universal human experiences that call forth lament. Lament singers--from the most ancient civilizations to traditional oral poets to the biblical psalmists and poets of Lamentations to popular singers across the globe--have always raised the cry of human suffering, giving voice to the voiceless, illuminating injustice, or pleading for divine help. This volume gathers an international collection of essays on biblical lament and Lamentations, illuminating their genres, artistry, purposes, and significant place in the history and theologies of ancient Israel. It also explores lament across cultures, both those influenced by biblical traditions and those not, as the practices of composition, performance, and interpretation of life's suffering continue to shed light on our knowledge of biblical lament. --From publisher's description.

Book Ancient Civilization an Introduction to Modern History

Download or read book Ancient Civilization an Introduction to Modern History written by Arthur Mayer Wolfson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Civilization an Introduction to Modern History The purpose of this book is indicated on the title page. It is written to meet the needs of classes which can devote only a brief amount of time to the study of Ancient History before taking up the study of Medieval and Modern History. The "Committee of Five" of the American Historical Association recommends "that if it seems wise to omit any detailed study of ancient history and to give three years substantially to the other three blocks, the teacher, while omitting all detail, may still attempt to give his pupils some idea of the growth of the ancient nations, and some idea of their achievements and their qualities." With this aim in view, only such details of the political history of antiquity have been here included as are necessary for an understanding of ancient civilization. Furthermore, only such elements of the life of the people of antiquity have been emphasized as arc necessary for a thorough comprehension of the history of Western Europe in modern times. The book is written especially for the use of pupils in the first or second year of the high school course. The point of view of boys and girls fifteen or sixteen years old has therefore been kept in mind in the selection of details and in the wording and arrangement of the text; and also in the choice of maps and illustrations. The maps arc adequate for making clear the geographical references in the text. Several large pictures have been made to illustrate the text - an object seldom attained by the illustrations in ancient histories. These pictures are carefully designed to arouse the imagination of the readers, and to assist them in realizing the conditions of life in ancient times. Acknowledgment is due to Mr. Morris C. Deshel, teacher of history in the DeWitt Clinton High School, for his assistance in getting together the material for this textbook, and for the preparation of the references given under the Search Topics. For helpful criticisms, also, the author's thanks are due to the history teachers in the DeWitt Clinton High School and in the Julia Richman High School. Book A History of the Medicines We Take

Download or read book A History of the Medicines We Take written by Anthony C Cartwright and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of the Medicines We Take gives a lively account of the development of medicines from traces of herbs found with the remains of Neanderthal man, to prescriptions written on clay tablets from Mesopotamia in the third millennium BC, to pure drugs extracted from plants in the nineteenth century to the latest biotechnology antibody products. The first ten chapters of the book in PART ONE give an account of the development of the active drugs from herbs used in early medicine, many of which are still in use, to the synthetic chemical drugs and modern biotechnology products. The remaining eight chapters in PART TWO tell the story of the developments in the preparations that patients take and their inventors, such as Christopher Wren, who gave the first intravenous injection in 1656, and William Brockedon who invented the tablet in 1843. The book traces the changes in patterns of prescribing from simple dosage forms, such as liquid mixtures, pills, ointments, lotions, poultices, powders for treating wounds, inhalations, eye drops, enemas, pessaries and suppositories mentioned in the Egyptian Ebers papyrus of 1550 BCE to the complex tablets, injections and inhalers in current use. Today nearly three-quarters of medicines dispensed to patients are tablets and capsules. A typical pharmacy now dispenses about as many prescriptions in a working day as a mid-nineteenth- century chemist did in a whole year.

Download or read book The Shock of the Ancient written by Larry F. Norman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultural battle known as the Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns served as a sly cover for more deeply opposed views about the value of literature and the arts. One of the most public controversies of early modern Europe, the Quarrel has most often been depicted as pitting antiquarian conservatives against the insurgent critics of established authority. The Shock of the Ancient turns the canonical vision of those events on its head by demonstrating how the defenders of Greek literature—rather than clinging to an outmoded tradition—celebrated the radically different practices of the ancient world. At a time when the constraints of decorum and the politics of French absolutism quashed the expression of cultural differences, the ancient world presented a disturbing face of otherness. Larry F. Norman explores how the authoritative status of ancient Greek texts allowed them to justify literary depictions of the scandalous. The Shock of the Ancient surveys the diverse array of aesthetic models presented in these ancient works and considers how they both helped to undermine the rigid codes of neoclassicism and paved the way for the innovative philosophies of the Enlightenment. Broadly appealing to students of European literature, art history, and philosophy, this book is an important contribution to early modern literary and cultural debates.

Book Sport and Democracy in the Ancient and Modern Worlds

Download or read book Sport and Democracy in the Ancient and Modern Worlds written by Paul Christesen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between sport and democratization. Drawing on sociological and historical methodologies, it provides a framework for understanding how sport affects the level of egalitarianism in the society in which it is played. The author distinguishes between horizontal sport, which embodies and fosters egalitarian relations, and vertical sport, which embodies and fosters hierarchical relations. Christesen also differentiates between societies in which sport is played and watched on a mass scale and those in which it is an ancillary activity. Using ancient Greece and nineteenth-century Britain as case studies, Christesen analyzes how these variables interact and finds that horizontal mass sport has the capacity to both promote and inhibit democratization at a societal level. He concludes that horizontal mass sport tends to reinforce and extend democratization.
