This book was released on 2015-12-06 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basil of Caesarea, also called Saint Basil the Great, (330 -379) was the bishop of Caesarea Mazaca in Cappadocia, Asia Minor (modern-day Kayseri, Turkey). St. Basil was born into the wealthy family of Basil the Elder, a famous rhetor, and Emmelia of Caesarea. His parents were known for their piety, and his maternal grandfather was a Christian martyr, executed in the years prior to Constantine I's conversion. The principal theological writings of Basil are his De Spirity Sancto (On the Holy Spirit), a lucid and edifying appeal to Scripture and early Christian tradition (to prove the divinity of the Holy Spirit), and his Refutation of the Apology of the Impious Eunomius, written in 363 or 364, three books against Eunomius of Cyzicus, the chief exponent of Anomoian Arianism. The first three books of the Refutation are his work; the fourth and fifth books that are usually included do not belong to Basil, or to Apollinaris of Laodicea, but probably to Didymus "the Blind" of Alexandria.

Written in the 4th century, this book showcases Basil's deep understanding of scripture and his ability to articulate complex theological concepts with clarity and precision. Through a series of well-reasoned arguments and biblical references, Basil explores the role of the Holy Spirit in the Trinity and its implications for Christian life and worship. Basil the Great, also known as Saint Basil, was a highly influential theologian and bishop in the early Church. His extensive knowledge of scripture, coupled with his pastoral experience, informed his writing and teaching. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a priest and then bishop, Basil of Caesarea devoted sophisticated treatises to the Trinity and to articulating his vision of the Christian life. In his homilies St Basil distilled the best of his moral and theological teachings into forms readily accessible to his flock - and now to us. During his lifetime, Basil was recognized as one of the foremost rhetoricians of his day - a man supremely skilled in the art of speaking, instructing, persuading, and delighting at the same time. These rhetorical skills are on full display in the eleven Moral Homilies translated in this volume, seven of which appear in English for the first time.

He taught that the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity are wholly unlike one another both in essence and in glory. “There is a triad, not in equal glories;” “one more glorious than the other in their glories to an infinite degree.” So says the Thalia, quoted in Ath. de Syn. S: 15. But the Nicene definition, while it was precise in regard to the Son, left the doctrine of the Holy Ghost comparatively open, (Pisteuomen eis to Agion Pneuma,) not from hesitation or doubt, but because this side of Arian speculation was not prominent. (Cf. Basil, Letters cxxv. and ccxxvi. and Dr. Swete in D.C.B. iii. 121.)

Download or read book Against Eunomius written by St. Basil of Caesarea and published by Catholic University of America Press. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basil of Caesarea is considered one of the architects of the Pro-Nicene Trinitarian doctrine adopted at the Council of Constantinople in 381, which eastern and western Christians to this day profess as ""orthodox."" Nowhere is his Trinitarian theology more clearly expressed than in his first major doctrinal work, Against Eunomius, finished in 364 or 365 CE. Responding to Eunomius, whose Apology gave renewed impetus to a tradition of starkly subordinationist Trinitarian theology that would survive for decades, Basil's Against Eunomius reflects the intense controversy raging at that time among Christians across the Mediterranean world over who God is. In this treatise, Basil attempts to articulate a theology both of God's unitary essence and of the distinctive features that characterize the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--a distinction that some hail as the cornerstone of ""Cappadocian"" theology. In Against Eunomius, we see the clash not simply of two dogmatic positions on the doctrine of the Trinity, but of two fundamentally opposed theological methods. Basil's treatise is as much about how theology ought to be done and what human beings can and cannot know about God as it is about the exposition of Trinitarian doctrine. Thus Against Eunomius marks a turning point in the Trinitarian debates of the fourth century, for the first time addressing the methodological and epistemological differences that gave rise to theological differences. Amidst the polemical vitriol of Against Eunomius is a call to epistemological humility on the part of the theologian, a call to recognize the limitations of even the best theology. While Basil refined his theology through the course of his career, Against Eunomius remains a testament to his early theological development and a privileged window into the Trinitarian controversies of the mid-fourth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church of the Holy Spirit, written by Russian priest and scholar Nicholas Afanasiev (1893–1966), is one of the most important works of twentieth-century Orthodox theology. Afanasiev was a member of the “Paris School” of émigré intellectuals who gathered in Paris after the Russian revolution, where he became a member of the faculty of St. Sergius Orthodox Seminary. The Church of the Holy Spirit, which offers a rediscovery of the eucharistic and communal nature of the church in the first several centuries, was written over a number of years beginning in the 1940s and continuously revised until its posthumous publication in French in 1971. Vitaly Permiakov's lucid translation and Michael Plekon's careful editing and substantive introduction make this important work available for the first time to an English-speaking audience.

Book excerpt: "This introduction brings together major themes in Greek Patristic anthropology - the image of God in the human being the Fall from Paradise, and the human condition in the present life and in the age to come. St. Basil the Great addresses the questions posed by the human condition with characteristic clarity, balance, and sobriety." "The volume begins with two discourses on the creation of humanity and a homily on the causes of evil, translated into English for the first time, and contains a new translation of a famous homily meditating on our human identity and experience. The volume also includes Letter 233 to Amphilochius of Iconium, St. Basil's spiritual son - a succinct and pointed discussion of how the human mind functions, the activity for which God created it, and how it can be used for good, evil, or morally neutral purposes. This letter complements the discussion of emotions in St. Basil's Homily against Anger, also included in this volume. Finally, the book includes excerpts from St. Basil's fatherly instructions to his ascetic communities, commonly known as the Long Rules, or the Great Asceticon."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: On the Holy Spirit is a theological treatise by Basil the Great, bishop of Caesarea and one of the Cappadocian Fathers. It presents a lucid and edifying appeal to Scripture and early Christian tradition in order to prove the divinity of the Holy Spirit. St. Basil forms clear and careful arguments against heresy of the early Christian church, mainly the second wave of Arianism. Basil proves that the Holy Spirit and the Son are not, by any margin, lesser in divinity than the Father, placing his defense of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit within the tradition of the Church.

Book The Asketikon of St Basil the Great

Download or read book The Asketikon of St Basil the Great written by Anna Silvas and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2005-09-22 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asketikon of St Basil the Great comprises a new English translation and studies which re-examine the emergence of monasticism in Asia Minor. Rufinus' translation of an earlier edition is compared with the Greek text of the longer edition, as a means of tracing the development of ideas. Silvas concludes that the antecedents of the monastic community of the Great Asketikon are best sought in the domestic ascetic movement in Anatolia as typified at Annisa under theleadership of Makrina.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Basil's homilies on the subject of wealth and poverty, although delivered in the fourth century, remain utterly fresh and contemporary. Whether you possess great wealth or have modest means, at the heart of Basil's message stands the maxim: Simplify your life, so you have something to share with others. While some patristic texts relate to obscure and highly philosophical questions, Basil's teachings on social issues are immediately understood andapplicable. At a time when vast income disparity and overuse of limited environmental resources are becoming matters of increasing concern, Basil's message is more relevant now than ever before.
