Book Exodus a Commentary

    Book Details:
  • Author : Martin Noth
  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 1962
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Exodus a Commentary written by Martin Noth and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1962 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exodus is seen in its relation to the preceding Genesis and to the succeeding three books of the Pentateuch. Unlike Genesis, which dealt with individuals, Exodus is primarily concerned with Israel collectively and with the basic elements of Israel's faith. The author shows that the central motifs are the flight from Egypt, especially the crossing of "the sea", and the theophany and covenant at Sinai. The exegesis deals with the narrative as it appears in its final form but, in order to clarify the story, the author makes constant references to the successive stages in its literary development, and throughout the commentary he distinguishes the literary strands -- notably those know as J, E, and P -- that are woven into the fabric of the book.

Book Making Sense of the Divine Name in the Book of Exodus

Download or read book Making Sense of the Divine Name in the Book of Exodus written by Austin Surls and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The obvious riddles and difficulties in Exod 3:13–15 and Exod 6:2–8 have attracted an overwhelming amount of attention and comment. These texts make important theological statements about the divine name YHWH and the contours of the divine character. From the enigmatic statements in Exod 3:13–15, most scholars reconstruct the original form of the name as “Yahweh,” which is thought to describe YHWH’s creative power or self-existence. Similarly, Exod 6:3 has become a classic proof-text for the Documentary Hypothesis and an indication of different aspects of God’s character as shown in history. Despite their seeming importance for “defining” the divine name, these texts are ancillary to and preparatory for the true revelation of the divine name in the book of Exodus. This book attempts to move beyond atomistic readings of individual texts and etymological studies of the divine name toward a holistic reading of the book of Exodus. Surls centers his argument around in-depth analyses of Exod 3:13–15, 6:2–8 and Exod 33:12–23 and 34:5–8. Consequently, the definitive proclamation of YHWH’s character is not given at the burning bush but in response to Moses’ later intercession (Exod 33:12–23). YHWH proclaimed his name in a formulaic manner that Israel could appropriate (Exod 34:6–7), and the Hebrew Bible quotes or alludes to this text in many genres. This demonstrates the centrality of Exod 34:6–7 to Old Testament Theology. The character of God cannot be discerned from an etymological analysis of the word yhwh but from a close study of YHWH’s deliberate ascriptions made progressively in the book of Exodus.

Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges desires to say that, in accordance with the policy of his predecessor the Bishop of Worcester, he does not hold himself responsible for the particular interpreta tions adopted or for the opinions expressed by the editors of the several Books, nor has he endeavoured to bring them into agreement with one another. It is inevitable that there should be differences of opinion in regard to many questions of criticism and interpretation, and it seems best that these differences should find free expression in different volumes. He has endeavoured to secure, as far as possible, that the general scope and character of the series should be observed, and that views which have a reasonable claim to consideration should not be ignored, but he has felt it best that the final responsibility should, in general, rest with the individual contributors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Book of Exodus IN manuscript and proof sheets, we have been travelling over a deeply-instructive and most interesting portion of the word of God the book OF exodus. Redemption by blood occupies a prominent place therein. It characterizes the book. God's many mercies to His redeemed, in the display of His power, the patience of His love, and the riches of His grace, flow from it. The great question of Israel's relationship to God is settled by the blood of the lamb. It changes their condition entirely. Israel within the blood-sprinkled door-posts was God's redeemed, blood-bought people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Historic Exodus Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Historic Exodus Classic Reprint written by Olaf Alfred Toffteen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historic Exodus Scarcely two years have passed since I published, in this series, my Ancient Chronology, Part I. In that vol ume I treated biblical chronology solely on the basis of dates furnished by the Bible, taking them at their face value, and without any inquiry either into the age of the documents in which they Occurred, or into their historicity. I promised then that these questions would be taken up in a future volume, to be called side-lights on Biblical Chronology. This is that volume. It has been found advisable to confine it more closely to the Exodus than was originally purposed, and consequently the title has been changed, the more closely to fit the contents. All eight volumes in The Bible for School and Home series, used in Charlotte Mason's schools, are intended for parents and teachers to use in preparing Bible lessons for the children in their charge. Each of the volumes contains two dozen or more lessons, preceded by the same lengthy introduction to sound teaching practices, a section which is well worth reading. For each lesson, Smyth specifies the Biblical passages to cover, then provides background information you can incorporate in your telling of the story to gain the interest of your children, carefully framed questions you can use to draw their attention to the main points, and ways you might direct the conversation to stir their affections and their actions.

This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers II. Such being the twofold process suggested by this text, let us next note the lessons which it enforces. In the first place, let us be quite sure that we give it its due weight in our thoughts and lives. Let us be quite sure that we never give an undue weight to the one half of the whole truth. There are plenty of people who are far too much, constitutionally and (perhaps by reason of a mistaken notion of religion) religiously, inclined to the contemplation of the more melancholy side of these truths and there are a great many people who are far too exclusively disposed to the contemplation of the other. But the bulk of us never trouble our heads about either the one or the other, but go on, forgetting altogether that swift, sudden, stealthy, skinny hand that, if I might go back to my former metaphor, is put out to lay hold of the swimmer and then pull him underneath the water, and which will clasp us by the ankles one day and drag us down. Do you ever think about it? If not, surely, surely you are leaving out of sight one of what ought to be the formative elements in our lives.
