Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Evelyn From the windows of the back room I look out on the flank of the big apartment-house that stands on the corner, and little slips of yard, side by side, with fences between. Among them ours has a lost or strayed appearance. Never did an unaspiring, city-bred yard look more homesick and out of place. It has a sun-dial in the middle, circled by a flagged path, and in its corners, sheltered by a few discour aged shrubs, several weather-worn stone ornaments. It suggests a cemetery of small things that had to have correspondingly small tombstones. I hear from Mrs. Bushey, the landlady, that a sculptress once lived on the lower floor and spent three hundred dollars lifting it out of the sphere in which it was born. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The household gods that have lain four years in storage are grouped round me, showing familiar faces. It’s nice of them not to have changed more, grown up as children do or got older like one’s friends. They don’t harmonize with the furniture—this is an appartement meublé—but I can melt them in with cushions and hangings. It’s going to be very snug and cozy when I get settled. This room—the parlor—is a good shape, an oblong ending in a bulge of bay window. Plenty of sun in the morning—I can have plants. Outside the window is a small tin roof with a list to starboard where rain-water lodges and sparrows come to take fussy excited baths. Across the street stands a row of brownstone fronts, blank-visaged houses with a white curtain in every window. The faces of such houses are like the faces of the people who live in them. They tell you nothing about what’s going on inside. It’s a peculiarity of New York—after living in a house with an expressionless front wall you get an expressionless front wall yourself. From the windows of the back room I look out on the flank of the big apartment-house that stands on the corner, and little slips of yard, side by side, with fences between. Among them ours has a lost or strayed appearance. Never did an unaspiring, city-bred yard look more homesick and out of place. It has a sun-dial in the middle, circled by a flagged path, and in its corners, sheltered by a few discouraged shrubs, several weather-worn stone ornaments. It suggests a cemetery of small things that had to have correspondingly small tombstones. I hear from Mrs. Bushey, the landlady, that a sculptress once lived on the lower floor and spent three hundred dollars lifting it out of the sphere in which it was born. I am going to like it here. I am going to make myself like it, get out of the negative habit into the positive. That’s why I came back from Europe, that a sudden longing for home, for Broadway, and the lights along the Battery, and dear little Diana poised against the sky. Four years of pension tables and third-class railway carriages do not develop the positive habit. I was becoming negative to the point of annihilation. I wanted to be braced by the savage energies of my native city. And also I did want some other society than that of American spinsters and widows. The Europeans must wonder how the land of the free and the home of the brave keeps up its birth-rate— But I digress...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evelyn's Folly: A Novel HE Scotch express was just starting. It was a bright, ii warm afternoon in September, and the railway sta tion at Euston Square looked more cheerful than usual. There was the usual noise, bustle, and excitement. Cab after cab had driven up, deposited its load of passengers and luggage, and driven away; there was a ringing of bells, and the confused voices of men, porters growing angry as they became busy; and the express from London to Aberdeen was to start at three, and it wanted now but one quarter of an hour. There were not quite so many passengers as usual. Perhaps the saddest group was that composed of five little motherless children dressed in deep mourning, who were ao companied by a careworn, haggard man with a deep crape band round his hat. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evelyn Byrd This book is the third and last of a m trilogy of romances. In that trilogy I have endeavoured to show forth the character of the Virginians - men and women. In "Dorothy South" I tried to show what the Virginians were while the old life lasted - "before the war." In "The Master of Warlock" I endeavoured faithfully to depict the same people as they were during the first half of the Civil War, when their valour seemed to promise everything of results that they desired. In "Evelyn Byrd" I have sought to show the heroism of endurance that marked the conduct of those people during the last half of the war, when disaster stared them in the face a?id they unfalteringly confronted it. But to-day half-pleased, half-perplexed by her own perversity, she could not resist taking him to the picture gallery she Wanted to show him The Colonnade. The picture was merged in shadow, and no longer the picture she remembered; but when the. Sun shone, all the rows quickened with amorous intrigue, and the little lady held out her striped skirt (she had lost none of her bland delight), and the gentleman who advanced to meet her bowed with the mock humility of yore, and the beautiful perspectives of the colonnade floated into the hush of the trees, and the fountain warbled. For a reason which eluded her, she was anxious to know how this picture would strike Ulick, and she tried to draw from him his ideas concerning it. An Elizabethan 'virginal had come to him to be repaired, and he had worked all the afternoon, and when overtaken by the dusk, he had impatiently sought a candle end, lit it, 'and placed it so that its light fell upon the jacks. Only one more remained to be adjusted. He picked it up, touched the quill and dropped it into its place, rapidly tuned the instrument, and ran his fingers over the keys. Evelyn was not a genius; he was emphatically a man of his own age. He was alive to all that was going on; in touch with statesmen, artists, scientists, and theologians; a dili gent observer of all that was to be seen; and his judgment as a rule represents the best Opinion of his time.
