Book excerpt: Chinoiserie, a decorative style inspired by the art of the Far East, gripped Britain from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth century. Despite taking its name from the French word for 'Chinese', the style also incorporated influences from other Asian countries, helping to shape the period's popular fantasy of the 'exotic Orient'. Wealthy consumers jostled to obtain imported wallpaper, lacquered cabinets and hand-painted porcelain, while domestic manufacturers such as Royal Worcester and Chippendale met demand with mass-produced items of their own. Though interest in the style waned as the Gothic Revival took hold, many examples of Chinoiserie have been preserved. In this beautifully illustrated book, Richard Hayman tells the story of this fascinating phenomenon, and explores the profound impact of Chinoiserie on the material culture of the West.

Book excerpt: Chinoiserie - Art in the Oriental style In Europe back in the 17th and 18th centuries, an overwhelming fascination with China-and in particular, Chinese porcelain developed among tastemakers, which fueled an immense demand for East Asian goods, particularly within the realm of the decorative arts. European manufacturers took advantage of this craze by beginning to produce designs in imitation of the Chinese hence the creation of Chinoiserie. Goods ranged from furniture to textiles to fine art and featured Chinese materials (or imitations of them) such as porcelain and lacquer, plus Chinese motifs like pagodas, dragons, and flora as imagined through the highly fantastical Western lens. Chinoiserie is an entirely European invention. Chinoiserie is interesting, with little scenes telling a story, it has movement and depth, it can be colorful and really engage your eye.

Book excerpt: A gorgeously illustrated survey of chinoiserie from the 18th century to today Chinoiserie is a term for Western art and design inspired by a largely invented vision of China. Marco Polo's sensational account of his visit to the exotic East in the 13th century sparked a fascination with China that reached a fever pitch in the 18th century and continues to this day. Art historian and artist Aldous Bertram has long been captivated by chinoiserie. Dragons & Pagodas is organized by theme, including porcelain, color and pattern, flora, fauna, and architecture. Each chapter is bursting with images ranging from grand European summer palaces and whimsical pagoda follies to charming details of screens, porcelain figurines, and ornate plasterwork. Complete with Bertram's own chinoiserie-inspired watercolors and collages, Dragons & Pagodas is an irresistible confection and an example of chinoiserie in its own right. -Cloth bound with edge stain

Book excerpt: A new style evolved in the decade of 1720-30. Now the Europeans would treat their "Chinese" and "Indian" subjects in a more fanciful manner, far removed from reality and often quite caricatural. Such chinoiserie owed much to the French, whose work would influence the whole of Europe. The development coincided with the emergence of the Rococo, an artistic manifestation all but synonymous with the reign of Louis XV. If chinoiserie cannot be identitified totally with the Rococo, it was certainly one of the more important aspects of that style, which in a very subtle manner combined Far Eastern elements with European motifs. -- Introduction.

Download or read book Chinoiserie written by Stacey Sloboda and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a critical reassessment of chinoiserie, a style both praised and derided for its triviality, prettiness, and ornamental excesses, Stacey Sloboda argues that chinoiserie was no mute participant in eighteenth-century global consumer culture, but was instead a critical commentator on that culture. Analysing ceramics, wallpaper, furniture, garden architecture and other significant examples of British and Chinese design, this book takes an object-focused approach to studying the cultural phenomenon of the 'Chinese taste' in eighteenth-century Britain. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the critical history of design and the decorative arts in eighteenth-century Britain, and students and scholars of art history, material culture, eighteenth-century studies and British history will find a novel approach to studying the decorative arts and a forceful argument for their critical capacities.
