Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Barclays of Boston Start not, gentle reader, at this announcement; such things occur even in the over-educated and overstrained city of the Puritan fathers. Young love! What a sad pity that the only obstacle aris ing, in after years, when the tender passion exists and overwhelms its deluded victims so early in life, is the manifest difficulty of remembering and ascertaining the idolized object of the first dream, ' and that the scent of the roses, instead of embalming the fair vision, should be lost in oblivion. Download or read book Popular History of Boston Classic Reprint written by Hezekiah Butterworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular History of Boston Some ten years ago the writer of this volume came to Boston, a stranger, for the purpose of reading in the Public Library and obtaining work as a journalist. Becoming deeply interested in works of local history, especially in those of Drake, and being unacquainted with society, he resolved to visit all the old historic places in and about Boston, in hours needed for exercise, and to study their associations. About a year ago the publishers asked him to prepare a young people's history of Boston, and to seek to make it popular and entertaining, after the methods of the Zig zag books. It was a pleasure to attempt this work, as it revived the memories of the solitary walks ten years ago, and brought into use the material then collected. Book Boston and Her Story Classic Reprint

Download or read book Boston and Her Story Classic Reprint written by Frederick A. Guindon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boston and Her Story The purpose of this book is to tell the story of Boston in a simple and interesting way, which will appeal especially to pupils of the early grammar school age. It does not pretend to give all the details of historical occurrences nor of modern things of interest, but aims to present the most important facts in a way that they can be understood easily, and with a thread of interest that will increase the probability of their retention. The story is divided into four parts: the Settlement of Boston, including the Physical Features of Original Boston; the Boston of Earl Colonial Days; the Boston of Revolutionary Days; the Boston of To-day. In each part the story is told by the use of fictitious characters, who are made to take part in genuine events, accurately described. The localities described in the fourth part are not held to be the only places of interest nor even those most worthy of attention, but an attempt has been made to present material from which one or two facts about each section of Boston may be learned, with the view of obtaining a clearer conception of the extent and attractiveness of the city. Throughout the book emphasis has been placed upon the meaning and value of the events described, and special attention has been given to simplicity of language and clearness of expression. The fundamental principle upon which the work is based is that of presenting a few historical facts with enough of the element of interest added to make reasonably sure that the facts will remain in the readers mind long after the thread of the story has been forgotten. There is not a foot of its original territory (we say original from the fact that more than two thirds of its present territory is made ground), but what is associated with our country's struggle for liberty or the trials and privations of its early settlers. To the antiquary it presents an inexhaustible store of surprises and a veritable mine of pleasure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Port Book of Boston Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Port Book of Boston Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Port Book of Boston At the present point of departure of the steamers for the beaches and shore resorts stood the old Sconce, or Southern Battery, in the eighteenth century; and at the present location of Battery Wharf, now occupied by the Merchants & Miners' line, was the North Battery. Between these two defences lay the Great Cove, which at that time constituted the inner haven, stretching well inland, as the land now lies. The print by Paul Revere, of which a reproduction is shown facing our title page, was made in 1768, when the Revolution was already fermenting, and only seven years before Revere made his midnight ride to Lexington and beyond. The North Battery is shown in the engraving, but the Sconce is not included. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
